« Should Rockies Deal Holliday? | Main | Rosenthal's Latest: Blanton, Furcal, Penny, Burnett, Greinke »

Odds and Ends: Alvarez, Zimmerman, Vizcaino, Hawkins

Some random musings around the league:

  • As MLBTR noted before, Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette also believes the Pirates will take Pedro Alvarez if the Rays pass on him.
  • Ryan Zimmerman may be looking for David Wright money (six years, $55MM), but the Nationals may be willing to pay him Ian Kinsler money (5 years, $22MM), according to Dave Sheinin of the Washington Post.
  • In this piece by Tony Jackson on the LA Daily News, 39 year-old Jose Vizcaino may try to make a comeback in 2009.  He's currently a special assistant with the Dodgers.
  • Troy Renck suggests the Rockies could be interested in LaTroy Hawkins if he continues to struggle for the Yankees.

There is a huge difference between David Wright and Ian Kinsler money. And there can be no doubt that Zimmerman will be closer to worth the Wright money than Kinsler money. Zimmerman is already arguably the best defensive third baseman in baseball and he's proven that he's gonna hit pretty well in this league. Maybe find some middle ground, like 6 years, $48M, but the Nationals need to lock him up. That offense has some potential in it with Zimmerman, Milledge, Kearns, Flores and Dukes, not to mention Marrero, Burgess and a couple other guys in the minors.

This Kovacevic guy is really going to look stupid if the Pirates end up passing on Alvarez. He's been pumping this story for weeks now.

I say Zim gets between 6 years 42 mil and 6 years 48 mil...so 7-8 mil per year. Big range, but thats because I have no inside information.

Zimmerman has to hit before he can get Wright money. Another year like last year and I believe that he's closer to the Kinsler range.

Another train of thought is that the Nationals deal him to get some pitching help.

Que the Baltimore fan with another long-winded post about how the Pirates really aren't interested in Alvarez and how he's going to fall to the Orioles.....

Please remind me why the nationals think they get Their best hitting player so far, not to mention fan favorite, for Ian Kinsler money? If he thinks he needs more money im sure someone like the yankees would gladly pay it. Im sure another option is the mets.
