« Olney's Latest: Sabathia, Sexson | Main | Odds and Ends: Bedard, Griffey, Minaya »
Scott Lauber of the Delaware News-Journal writes in the Phillies/baseball blog about the team's trade strategy in the looming trade-deadline season.
He spoke to Phillies Assistant GM Ruben Amaro Jr. and GM Pat Gillick, both of whom reiterated the notion that it'll be tough to trade this year because of the parity among some clubs. There are 15 teams with a .500 record or better, which means some of those teams may still be in contention in mid July. Of course, it also means some of those teams will be out of it by the trade deadline.
To wit: The Brewers reportedly have told teams that they aren't willing to move Ben Sheets, even though they're 6-1/2 games behind the Cubs in the NL [Central]. Of course, one losing streak could force them to change their strategy. Within the past week, Gillick has dispatched scouts to evaluate Cleveland's C.C. Sabathia, Cincinnati's Bronson Arroyo and Toronto's A.J. Burnett, a former pupil of pitching coach Rich Dubee in Florida.
This echoes what Buster Olney wrote in his blog about some of the teams contending in the C.C. Sabathia Sweepstakes and how some of them may think they're in it, but may actually be testing the waters.

Speaking of Ruben Amaro Jr., Doc at Balls, Sticks & Stuff writes that a new book by Bob Gordon introduces Amaro Jr. as "currently the club's general manager." Last year, the actual, current GM, Pat Gillick, said he may step down at the end of the season. Typo? Food for thought?

The Cubs and Brewers are in the NL Central. Not the West.

1. There are 15 teams over .500. This is not surprising. Half the teams are above average.
2. As mentioned above, the Brewers are in the Central.
3. MIL is only three games back in the Wild Card. Behind St. Louis and Florida. Not exactly worldbeaters. Of course they're not selling.

Fixed the NL West reference and left a message at the Phillies/baseball blog as the passage was a direct quote.

The Phillies need to make some huge moves if they want to win the AL East
1. Utley cant carry the entire team, nor can he keep his torrid pace
2. Ryan Howard is TRASH. Give me a break I could make more contact at the major league level than him.
3. Your pitching staff is a mess, the only real solid pitcher you have is Hamels. Thats it.
3.5. Even if you traded for sheets (who isnt avaliabe, and wont be avaliable), that doesnt fix any of you problems.

Howard is definitly not trash hes undoubtedly a top 5 1st baseman in the league and arguably the best power hitter. And how are you suggesting ben sheets wouldnt help. I know hes not available ,but if we got him as you say in your 3.5 i would love to know how he wouldn't help/fix or pitching problem.

AL East, NL East, whatever, you couldnt win either of them.
but ryan howard, is.... not as good as he gets credit for. If you dont agree with me you dont know that much about baseball. Hes hitting .219. Thats a joke. 19 home runs, thats good, especially for this time of year, and 63 RBI's thats solid, but all together thoes numbers dont equal a good clean up hitetr. Ryan Howard is exactly like Adam Dunn. Except his average is lower and he strikes out more.

thts a pretty good comparison but howard has the slight edge over dunn and your right his average is terrible right now but i think everyone tht knows baseball can agree he is better than a .219 hitter and yea he strikes out way way way too much but id still want him on my team
