Dodgers Interested In Jack Wilson, C.C. Sabathia

According to Ken Rosenthal, the Dodgers have jumped into the fray for C.C. Sabathia.  They don't have a Matt LaPorta-caliber prospect, but they could make a substantial three-player offer.  The Dodgers, being a big market club, could try to sign Sabathia before he hits free agency.

Rosenthal says the Dodgers are simultaneously pursuing Pirates shortstop Jack Wilson.  He might require some of the same prospects, so L.A. probably can't get both Wilson and Sabathia. Since Wilson is signed for '09, such an acquisition might allow the Dodgers to let Rafael Furcal walk as a free agent.  Based on Ned Colletti's comments to MLB.com, he seems willing to let some talent go to get a regular shortstop.

On the Brewers-Sabathia front - LaPorta is in play, but if he's included Alcides Escobar is out.  The Brewers do not plan on offering up J.J. Hardy (Tom Haudricourt agrees).  Rosenthal talked to some baseball people who believe Sabathia will be traded before his Tuesday start.

I think this officially puts the cubs out of the running.

Mat Gamel
Darren Ford
Cole Gillespie
Freddy Parejo

for

CC

-id much rater trade gamel than laporta

actually, put lorenzo cain in for freddy parejo

So who do the Pirates get in return for Jack Wilson...

keep in mind he is hitting .316 and one of the best defensive SS in the league.

If Colletti is right and it takes prolly a 2 for 1 trade do the Pirates get James McDonald and who?

How about:
Scott Elbert
Andy LaRoche
James McDonald
Delwyn Young
for
CC
Jhonny Peralta

"Scott Elbert
Andy LaRoche
James McDonald
Delwyn Young
for
CC
Jhonny Peralta"

Not a bad offer. The Dodgers being in this is very, very interesting. The wild card in this all is that they have the $$$ to lock him up after the season and the fact that CC is from California. I agree they dont have anyone as interesting as LaPorta or Gamel, but they could put together package of very good prospects. Will be interesting to see what kind of package Colleti puts together and what exactly Shapiro wants.

"I think this officially puts the cubs out of the running."

Agreed, truth is they never had the pieces to be in it in the first place.

The Dodgers could offer James McDonald or Chin-Lung Hu for Jack Wilson. The Dodgers could offer LaRoche, Eithier, and McDonald for Sabathia. I think the Brewers end up with him anyway. He probably will be traded before his next start and the Indians are just making sure no one makes a crazy offer between now and Tuesday. I think he gets traded on Monday, joins the team on Tuesday.

Look for all the teams interested in CC that didn't get him- The Yankees, Red Sox, Rays, Cubs, Phillies, Dodgers- to go after Bedard and Harden. I think the Cubs get Bedard for a package of Sean Gallagher, Josh Vitters, and Felix Pie. They could have Gallagher replace Bedard in the rotation, make Vitters their 3B after Adrian Beltre leaves, and give Pie a chance in CF. If this doesn't happen, I say he goes to the Phillies for Carlos Carrasco, Shane Victorino, and Josh Outman. Carrasco and Outman can be called up to fill Bedard's spot and Miguel Batista's. (With him going to the bullpen) Victorino can be their CF of the future to give them a pretty solid outfield of Ichiro, Balentin, and Victorino. I don't see the Dodgers and Yankees being serious about giving up prospects and the Rays and Red Sox won't give up a lot because they don't have a need. So I see the Brewers getting Sabathia with Bedard going to either the Cubs or Phillies.

The Dodgers a terrible offensive team, want to trade for Jack Wilson.

Ned Colletti is a joke. Bill Plaschke is secretly a Giants fan, and just laughing at the whole metro area.

God, I hope the Cubs make that trade that Joe proposed.

Arod... Jack is not a bad player in the least! and he is no joke with the bat, he is an Avg type hitter.

Ok, i want to run something past you guys and see what you think. I agree that CC could end up with the Brewers, but how is this where you can get CC, Nady and Bay...

Pirates would send Nady, Wilson, Grabow to Dodgers for Kemp and McDonald.

Indians send CC to Dodgers for LaRoche, Hu, Elbert.

Now i know the Kemp part sounds crazy, but they are talking about moving him all year.

This gives the Dodgers Nady and Wilson for this season and Next, (look at the available SS next season, you would want jack when you see the list). This also gives you the chance to sign CC and have him for the playoff run.

Now if you dont sign CC and Furcal you let walk. More than likely you will get 4 comp picks from them. Giving you 5 of the top 50 picks or so, allowing you to restock your system in a hurry much like the Brewers do.

So how far off are we on this?

Also for Pirates fans, i would try and trade Bay and Marte to the Rays for Brignac, Niemann, and McGee...

This would be the perfect trade deadline for the Pirates!

The problem with the Dodgers is that they lack power. Why would they want another guy who hit for AVG? Thats what they have in Loney and Kemp and Martin. The I don't know if Colorado will trade Holliday within their own division, but thats more along the lines of the type of bat LA needs. Kemp and Loney look like Tony Gwynn types to me,good players with no power. I dont want to hear about the potential. Ned needs to make a move now!

I am so not falling for this "Sabathia will be traded before his Tuesday start" stuff.

That's the baseball rumor equivalent of Lucy with a football.

Jskohl... the thing is... who are you going to get at SS? Who is available that is an everyday SS who starts in the bigs that is available?

No one... there is only a handful of SS who are going to hit for power and you might sacrifice some defense.

So in Jack your getting a gold glove caliber defensive SS who will hit .280-.300 every year, and is pretty clutch.

With Nady just check the numbers, even when he hurt his left shoulder, his non throwing shoulder he is still in the top of most hitting categories, and has 12HR and is MR. CLUTCH

I'd rather wait for an Orlando Cabrerra or maybe Edgar Renteria. Nomar looked ok taday. Why give anything now when they can just spend money in the offseason. 2B is also a position they'll need to fill this offseason. Ned Colletti will have a lot of money coming off the books at the end of the year.

Renteria's option will more than likely be picked up... he wont be a FA

I wouldn't bet on the option being picked up for Renteria.

"Look for all the teams interested in CC that didn't get him- The Yankees, Red Sox, Rays, Cubs, Phillies, Dodgers- to go after Bedard and Harden."

I dont know Joe, look past the name, W-L and ERA. There are some serious question marks coming out of Seattle about Bedard, starting with his mental toughness and attitude. Hes gaining the reputation of a guy that WONT(not cant)go pass the 100 pitch count, no matter what inning it is. Apparently there has also been some talk about him not wanting to be a #1 type because of the "pressure". Now I now whoever gets him would have him as their #2, but come on, what kind of person says those things. And of course, there are some health issues and not so much if he can stay healthy, but if he will pitch with pain. The answer appears to be no.

After tonights game he apparently left without talking to the media...again. Lastly, someone correct me if im wrong, but I think there was a report a week or 2 ago about Hendry not even being interetsed in him, mostly for the above stated reasons. I just dont see him right NOW being in anyones radar.

I think Wilson's owed way too much money.

wow dude, you really have it out for Wilson dont you?

What more do you want from the guy, he won a silver slugger award for a SS, he is going to hit .300+ this season, and play a gold glove SS... he is def. not owed way too much

I can't see the Phils trading Vic, Carrasco, and Outman...

No chance... Victorino won't go anywhere unless they get a #1 in the package... I'm not sure that Bedard fits that bill... Coupled with the fact that Carrasco is their #1 pitching prospect in the farm system... Outman is their 2nd best prospect in the farm... It's not happening...

"The Dodgers a terrible offensive team, want to trade for Jack Wilson."

That be what I said.

Jack Wilson's contract is fine. I said him to the Dodgers is a complete joke because they can barely hit their way out of a paper bag.

Jack Wilson fluke season last year or not, is a bad hitter. His defense is great and all, and more power to him he isn't a terrible baseball player. The Dodgers however need someone who can actually hit a baseball well.

08:$6.5M, 09:$7.25M, 10:$8.4M club option ($0.6M buyout)

That is Wilson's contract situation. I'd take him over Lugo any god damn day of the week on the Red Sox. The man can't hit.

Unless Marte has negative value I don't see how Bay+Marte lands only McGee, Niemann and Brignac. The Rays would need to cough up another decent prospect (not Davis or Price, but one of those centerfielders they have in the minors perhaps).

Lugo has the 4th highest OPS among AL shortstops. As a Jays fan, the last thing I want to be reading is a Red Sox fan bitching about offense.

I would trade Lugo for David Eckstein straight up. Anybody who has been posting here for a while knows how much I loathe David Eckstein. As a Red Sox fan the last thing I want to be reading is anyone that even slightly defends Julio Lugo.

"keep in mind he is hitting .316 and one of the best defensive SS in the league."

Wilson is an ok hitter and a good defender, but don't overrate the guy. He is an average everyday caliber SS

"If Colletti is right and it takes prolly a 2 for 1 trade do the Pirates get James McDonald and who?"

Um, McDonald and nothing or a low level prospect. Either that or Hu and a minor league reliever. Maybe someone like Troncoso

"Jack Wilson fluke season last year or not, is a bad hitter."

Wilson has had 2 good hitting seasons and is working on another, though his power numbers are down. Still, he has the ability to hit .300 and play good fundamental baseball, which is really want the Dodgers need. Wilson is comparable to Gary DiSarcina, and that type of player can make an impact on a team like the Dodgers

"I said him to the Dodgers is a complete joke because they can barely hit their way out of a paper bag."

Oh really? Have you been watching them lately?

"I'd rather wait for an Orlando Cabrerra or maybe Edgar Renteria. Nomar looked ok taday."

Cabrera is an interesting move as he is basically a poor man's right handed Furcal at the plate with a smoother glove and almost as much arm in the field. Forget Renteria. Still, Nomar looked very good and can still play the position if he is healthy, though that is a big if.

"So in Jack your getting a gold glove caliber defensive SS who will hit .280-.300 every year,"

Gold Glove caliber? Not quite, though he is good. As for .280-.300 every year, quit homering for the Pirates. Wilson has only ever hit over .280 in 2 full seasons plus 35 games this year.

"2B is also a position they'll need to fill this offseason. "

It looks more and more like 2B may be filled from within, with LaRoche or DeWitt moving over there

"No one... there is only a handful of SS who are going to hit for power and you might sacrifice some defense."

Huh? Hardy can defend and hit for power. Both Angels SS can field and hit for power. Furcal is such a huge loss because of his power and defense. Orlando Cabrera has 2 GG and has 4 40+ double seasons. Khalil Greene hits a bit like a smaller version of Dave Kingman (no average, all power)and can defend. Plenty of examples here.

"The Dodgers could offer LaRoche, Eithier, and McDonald for Sabathia."

That is way too much. Ethier's bat has come alive and his defense is excellent, plus they are without Pierre for at least a month and Jones is still dead weight. The other two are blue chip prospects. Sabathia is worth a package of LaRoche, McDonald and Falkenborg/Troncoso considering the contract issues as well as the needs for Cleveland.

"Kemp and Loney look like Tony Gwynn types to me,good players with no power."

Um, have you seen the size of Kemp (or Loney for that matter)? The home runs will come when Kemp starts makes better pitch selection and stops striking out so much.

"Scott Elbert
Andy LaRoche
James McDonald
Delwyn Young
for
CC
Jhonny Peralta"

I really, really like this deal. It gets LaRoche and Young into a situation where they have steady work and takes care of the Dodgers' need at SS along with bringing in a true ace. The deal really works for both teams.

"'The Dodgers could offer LaRoche, Eithier, and McDonald for Sabathia.'

Well I thought the Dodgers would have to overpay a bit with the Brewers offering Matt LaPorta. I guess your deal seams reasonable too, but are the Indians really going to make that trade and pass up LaPorta.

"Well I thought the Dodgers would have to overpay a bit with the Brewers offering Matt LaPorta. I guess your deal seams reasonable too, but are the Indians really going to make that trade and pass up LaPorta."

Then don't make the deal. The Dodgers' starters have under performed and Billingsley is pitching like the ace he was supposed to develop into. Kuroda is healthy and was dominant yesterday, Park is pitching incredibly well, Lowe is consistent and Penny should be better once he returns. Hell, LaRoche has great minors numbers too, is only 2 years older than LaPorta and almost the whole infield.

LaRoche is an Andy Marte clone.

We want Kemp or LaPorta, let the bidding begin.

"LaRoche is an Andy Marte clone."

A what? When in his pro career has Marte ever hit even .290? When in his pro career has Marte had an OBP of over .400? LaRoche is a FAR better player than Marte.

"We want Kemp or LaPorta, let the bidding begin."

A proven ML CF who may well go 20/40 with 90 RBI vs. a guy who, while the same age, hasn't played a day above AA and lacks speed? If Sabathia is worth LaPorta, he isn't worth Kemp. LaRoche has essentially the same hitting profile as LaPorta and plays a more desirable position. Hell, you don't think they could stick LaRoche in left if they wanted to?

"Scott Elbert
Andy LaRoche
James McDonald
Delwyn Young
for
CC and Peralta"

How is that any better than a Rich Hill or Veal, Matt Murton, Vitters and Gallagher?

Hu has value? hahaha people complain how Cubs fans over value cedeno. Hu is a terrible player and not a prospect

Laroche might have been the same profile of Laporta two years ago. Not so much anymore. He's quickly approaching bust terrority.

Lets deal with a few facts:

1) Jack Wilson has absolutley no trade value. He gets paid $7 million/season with a career .270 BA and .313 OBP. Frankly, over his career he's proven to be an "average" #8 hitter, and thats simply not what the Dodgers need. I'm not in love with claiming his small sample size of 600 ABs over the past two seasons of .300 BA overrides his previous 3,200 ABs of mediocrity. Giving up anything for Jack Wilson would be an awful, awful trade.

2) Ethier > LaPorta > LaRoche.

Easy equation to follow, but the difference between the values of Ethier and LaPorta is not very large at this point. LaPorta has the higher ceiling, Either has the higher base (worst case is probably a .280/20 type player). LaRoche's value really isn't close to that of either of those players as the question remains "if he was so good, why hasn't he won the 3B job in LA over some mediocre competition".

I still think the Brewers get Sabathia, but I think the presence of another legitimate bidding party (with the pieces to get a deal done) means the Brewers will pay over the odds. But, to be honest, they should. There's a legit case that the acquisition of CC makes them NL Pennant favorites (and this coming from a Cubs fan).

Just to let everyone know, Jack Wilson was a THREE-time gold glove runner-up. Meaning during those years there was ONLY
ONE shortstop in the NL who had better defensive years. And who knows how that voting goes if he actually played for a contender. His career batting average is suspect, but he has been on a tear over the past year and has had a 200 hit season. He is also a great clubhouse presence. Your worried about his contract, but Jack Wilson would be the 10th highest paid player on the Dodgers, so obviously when it comes to LA the money really isnt THAT big of an issue.

AND "No one... there is only a handful of SS who are going to hit for power and you might sacrifice some defense."

AA: Huh?... ETC.
AA all your examples are not available. Hardy is playing for Brewers who are tied for the wild-card (not-sellers), and rumors say cant even be traded for CC. You bring up both Angels ss are good, but angels are also first in their division and not selling. You bring up Orlando Cabrera playing for CHW who are first in their division and not sellers. The only legit example is Khalil Green, but he's batting a solid .228 with a OBP of .278. And still may not be a piece the Padres are willing to part with.

SOOOOO, maybe I agree with Schnoah, Jack Wilson is not the best SS in the game. And I admit he is def not in probably the top 10. BUT, I believe he is the best most available SS in this trade market.

"Scott Elbert
Andy LaRoche
James McDonald
Delwyn Young
for
CC and Peralta"

How is that any better than a Rich Hill or Veal, Matt Murton, Vitters and Gallagher?"

-Are you joking? Rich Hill is a 28-year old lefty who is rotting in the minors because of control issues. Matt Murton has very little value, and Gallagher has an upside of a no.4 starter/swingman.

If there's anyone the Cubs should be shopping, it's Felix Pie. His value is dropping by the minute.

Hey look, we got a new troll on the board...

SZL, to put it nicely, your comments are beyond irrational...
1) There isnt a day of the week that I don’t take Hu over Cedeno. All Ronny has proven is that he is rather questionable in all aspects of the game ~ atleast Hu will provide some of the best D in the game…
2) How is Hill/Murton/Vitter/Gallagher better than Elbert/LaRoche/McDonald/Young? Seriously?
3) LaRoche is a bust with his 125 randomly scattered ML ABs received over two years worth of callups? Really? I guess Gallagher is a bust too since his two years worth of random games has provided a combined well-below crap line…

Just for sh1ts and giggles, I loaded up the cubbies AAA website to check on some stats.

Felix Pie is batting around .230 with an OBP around .285 and he has 4 errors already!

And the mighty Rich Hill leads the squad with a WHIP of 1.92!!! 28 BBs in 26 innings is a bad thing.

I find the apparrent popular assumption that Colletti would offer James McDonald and Scott Elbert to be astonishing. Id have to eat my hat if that were to happen.

"Scott Elbert
Andy LaRoche
James McDonald
Delwyn Young
for
CC and Peralta"

I dont see the indianstrading 2 for 3. Maybe throw in Troncosso and you have a deal

"Hu is a terrible player and not a prospect"

What? Hu has had hardly any real MLB seasoning. He was thrust into his role this year because of the injuries to Nomar and LaRoche and pushed even harder after Furcal went down. Hu's numbers in the minors, as a hitter and fielder, have been excellent. He even has power potential. What he projects to is Orlando Cabrera with a better ability to hit for average.

"I dont see the indianstrading 2 for 3. Maybe throw in Troncosso and you have a deal"

That is 2 for 4, not 3. Still, Elbert and Troncoso are interchangable.

"AA all your examples are not available."

I was responding to a general comment, not one about available SS. As availability, Cabrera is likely very available next year and the Dodgers could well take a stab, given how much he liked living in L.A. the first time.

"Jack Wilson has absolutley no trade value. He gets paid $7 million/season with a career .270 BA and .313 OBP. Frankly, over his career he's proven to be an "average" #8 hitter, and thats simply not what the Dodgers need. I'm not in love with claiming his small sample size of 600 ABs over the past two seasons of .300 BA overrides his previous 3,200 ABs of mediocrity."

Actually, Wilson had a very good year in 2004, which you ignored.

"Laroche might have been the same profile of Laporta two years ago. Not so much anymore. He's quickly approaching bust terrority."

Where on earth do you get that idea? He has a great swing, an excellent eye and has been open to playing multiple positions, including 2B where his bat will be ever better. LaPorta, on the other hand, is a corner outfielder without any special ability. LaRoche's playing time has been cut by a combination of a freak finger injury and Blake DeWitt's emergence, yet he still is having good at bats (which you likely don't ever see). He would be an immediate improvement over what the Indians have right now and projects to be a much better overall hitter than LaPorta.

For anyone who has ever wondered what it looks like when kids with down syndrome get into an argument, I submit this thread for your consideration.
