« Yankees To Sign Richie Sexson | Main | D'Backs Acquire Tony Clark »
Ken Rosenthal spoke to Francisco Liriano's agent, Greg Genske. The 24 year-old lefty is frustrated that he's still at Triple A, and Genske has contacted the Players' Association about filing a grievance. The union will investigate. Liriano is now dominating in the minors.
Rosenthal says Liriano's arbitration year has already been pushed back by his time in the minors. Twins GM Bill Smith denies any shady money-saving tactics, saying "our starters are all doing the job."
Most likely, the Twins would be an improved team by replacing Livan Hernandez in the rotation with Liriano. But this isn't the first time the Twins have chosen veteran mediocrity or worse over promising young players.

well, when theres smoke theres fire, maybe they are trying to keep him under team control longer, why not? why is it so shady, cause he wont get paid so much to do it yet like that wont happen for him someday, id want to be sure his arm stays glued to his shoulder first

Give the guy a shot...it can only help them-Livan is bad. 73 ER in 120 innings isnt really helping you.
Posted by: HypnoToad | July 17, 2008 at 02:18 PM
This is actually quite a sticky situation. Livan is the leader of the staff; not in statistics but rather in mentorship. Cutting him would be more detrimental than what most people think. None of the other four young starters (Baker, Blackburn, Slowey, or Perkins) have pitched poorly so you can't removed them. As of right now the only option is to trade someone to keep Liriano happy, but who? I think Liriano and his agent need to be patient based on the circumstances.

Why are "money-saving tactics" shady, if that even is the reason for keeping him down? It's a business, and every team has to include the money when making personnel decisions, just like players almost always go for the most money once they hit free agency. Anyways, there's a pretty easy explanation for why he's still in AAA: the Twins gave him a shot in the majors and he sucked. Now he has to earn his way back by pitching well in AAA, which he has been doing lately. But, none of the Twins' 4 young starters deserve to be removed, while the Twins also (mistakenly, imo) believe that Livan should remain in the rotation. I can see why he's frustrated and as a Twins' fan definitely wish he'd replace Livan in the rotation, but I think the Twins honestly don't feel like there's an opening for him right now. Since they don't feel they need him in the majors, then they want to be absolutely sure that he's ready when he gets recalled.

FWIW - Liriano's FA was delayed in late May before he started pitching well in the minors. But Liriano is likely losing Super-2 arbitration status by being in the minors until this point.
If I were the Twins I would pay him next season like a super-2 and put the issue behind them. No reason to aggravate a potential ace that you might be interested in signing in the future (buying out 1-2 years of FA).

Any chance they move him for a 3B or some other position?
Posted by: GD31892 | July 17, 2008 at 02:48 PM
lol to the comment above me
Posted by: 04Forever | July 17, 2008 at 02:51 PM
we don't need him at 3b because he hits lefty. if he was a righty, that would be a totally logical thing to do. he'd be the next ankiel.
Posted by: derby | July 17, 2008 at 02:58 PM
GD said FOR a 3B or other position, not TO 3B or other position. Try reading the whole comment before making fun of the guy.
Posted by: Pawtucket Pat | July 17, 2008 at 03:01 PM
I could see them moving him if they felt that he wouldn't recover to about 85-90% of what he was or felt that his injury probablity was high.
If they could get someone to give them a Bedard or Haren haul for a pitcher that they felt would be injured constantly or would take a step back and be a number 2 or 3 instead of a ace then yes I could see them moving him.
But if Lirano comes back to even close to what he was in 06 and has no lingering injuries that come back to bite him they would be majorly foolish to move him now when his value is lower.
Thats not to say that I wouldn't love it if the Reds could get the guy for a package that centered around Encarcion, but I don't see it happening. Some team would have to really put out a major offer to get him now.

0% chance the Twins trade Liriano.
Posted by: kab21 | July 17, 2008 at 03:14 PM
If the Twins consider Liriano better than Livan (as most people do) but are holding him down to save money, that's shady. The expectation is that wins come first for a playoff contender. It's insulting to the fans.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | July 17, 2008 at 03:24 PM
While I agree that Liriano is LIKELY better than Livan, the Twins are violating no rules, regulations or statutes by keeping Liriano in AAA. It is quite likely that when/if Liriano is called up, he gets lit up worse than Livan. If Livan were to be the one in AAA, he could be more dominant there than Liriano. It's all apples and oranges, really.
Posted by: barracus79 | July 17, 2008 at 03:38 PM
And while the Twins are not breaking any rules, they will pay the price when it's time to negotiate with him, a nice little check and balance if you will.
Posted by: barracus79 | July 17, 2008 at 03:39 PM
well heres how im looking at it, 1.5 games out makes them a contender, but they could still fall out of contention very easily like most teams do in the second half, look at the mets last year they fell out on the last game of the season pretty much. i believe if the twins muscle there way into first and can get a 3 game lead, liriano will be called up to maintain the lead, but other then maintain a lead in the division, what good is wasting an arbitration year on possibly the next big game pitcher in baseball? as far as being insulted, i think like if we did this with clay bucholz in the same situation, i would rather not bring him up and save him then waste him if we were losing
Posted by: 04Forever | July 17, 2008 at 03:44 PM
Yeah I agree that nothing will come of the grievance idea. It's just crappy for fans.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | July 17, 2008 at 03:45 PM
The Twins are keeping him arbitration eligible by keeping his major league service time under 3 years.
Posted by: twinsfan | July 17, 2008 at 03:48 PM
trade boof !! what about this? we get rid of boof and span, for Garret Atkins. . and then move up liriano in the bull pen, then see if his glass arm can hold up there, if it can put lavon in that spot, he stays on the squad and gets to pitch more days after someone who can throw more then 80 mph, so its a weird change in speed. . I think this is the only thing the twins can do. . plus Atkins is a beast !! anyone else like it ?
Posted by: Bray991 | July 17, 2008 at 05:04 PM
I like the thought and Rob Antony (Assistant GM) has said the bullpen might be an option after the break. While the young arms are doing so well, it only takes a couple bad starts or an injury for one of them to be switched up with Franny.
Livan shouldn't go anywhere despite his numbers. His veteran leadership and big-game experience make him vital in a playoff run and moving him to the bullpen to create a starting spot for Liriano might now bode well for Livan's confidence/moral.
The money thing (imo) is a non-issue. The Twins have more than enough to spend now and into the future. If they were holding him down to save a year, that'd be smart of them, but I highly doubt that is why he is still in triple A.
I can't wait to see him though when he does come back up and word from Rochester is that his pitches are hitting mid-90's again and that slider is starting to bite like it used to! :-)
Posted by: ViNNy | July 17, 2008 at 05:19 PM
Of course the Twins are looking to save money. It may not be the sole reason they're keeping him down, but it certainly did not go unnoticed.
Posted by: Meoveryouok | July 17, 2008 at 05:37 PM
The Twins are definatley saving their money because baseball is a business, the sooner Liriano realizes it the better. Here is an important moment to watch because yet again the Twins are displeasing first rate left handed pitching.

When do you think the time table for luke hughes is, i know they don't want him up yet becuase he is just learning 3rd base (from 2nd) and he needs a transition time, but i have watched film on his swing, he looks awesome!! no joke, what do you think?
Posted by: Bray991 | July 17, 2008 at 07:24 PM
Tim, you're not doing your homework here, and either has Rosenthal. The Pioneer Press had reported TWO days ago that the Twins are on the verge of bringing Liriano up: http://www.twincities.com/news/ci_9899665
As Bill Smith suggests, if it were really about money, we wouldn't have seen Liriano in late April.
It's also a false choice between Livan and Liriano. Likely, we'd see Bass get cut. Livan might end up in the bullpen, but I think more likely we'll see Liriano start games, with Perkins or Boof finishing them up depending on the outcome. The Twins are clearly going limit Liriano's innings, and with Boof's implosion, Slowey's injury, not much pitching at AAA, and a staff w/o a vet, it's an oversimplification to suggest the Twins should release Livan.
Posted by: Pseudofool | July 17, 2008 at 08:09 PM
some things to consider:
- liriano is coming off of major arm surgery. they will NOT rush him back.
- he has had 3 dominant starts in a row, not 10. it wouldn't hurt him to stay in AAA longer to gain more confidence.
- there is no spot for him. baker, slowey, blackburn, and perkins have earned their spots. Livan is not a reliever, and has pitched great at the dome. He is the guy you want for the stretch run and postseason if it comes to that, because none of the other 4 starters and liriano could carry the load. Livan also is an innings eater you need in case one of the young arms wears down.
- the twins know what they are doing and have proven that over the years, so no one should question this.
Posted by: minnesotawins | July 17, 2008 at 08:51 PM
I love the comment at the end about going with veteran mediocrity. I mean sure keep questioning this team all they have done is win division titles in 02,03,04,06. It's also not like they have a history of devloping pitchers or anything. So yeah keep questiong what they are doing with a pitcher you have alot more knowledge of pitching than Rick Anderson and Jim Rantz.

After starting last night for the Red Wings (and having a fabulous night), Liriano wasn't really backing up his agent's harsh words.
http://www.democratandchronicle.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080718/SPORTS06/807180361/1024
Opening line in the article is that he isn't frustrated.
Bottom line is that he really just started putting it together consistently in his last four great starts in a row. The front office acknowledged days ago that they have to find a spot for him - but they have a problem because their other young starters are getting the job done. And Livan is very necessary insurance for the young arms who haven't ever thrown the number of innings they are working up to throw this year. Including Liriano - who is coming off of injury and his innings may be limited as well. The national media just gloms onto the easy story - the one where the Twins are cheap SOB's.
The real story is that they have developed some really good pitching. And that their future ace is going to be back and helping them win games. Probably sometime pretty soon.'
But I guess that just isn't as interesting as some agent spouting off because he's looking out for his own bottom line.

"Guilty"? You're likening the Twins to a pedophile? I'm at a loss. Really.
Liriano is ready to come up. The Twins know this and have said as much publicly. If they were cheap and shady, they would have never pulled him up in April and given him several starts. And they would be talking out of the side of their mouth saying he still had a ways to go.
Liriano crapped on his chance to get Super 2 status by not being ready months ago when he was gifted a chance by the Twins. He didn't perform. I'm not gonna cry in my beer for a guy who will get his due.
This is much adieu about nothing. He will be up before the end of the month. Maybe even early next week if Slowey's finger isn't better for his start or they finally decide to unload Bass or find a trade for Boof. Let the process work and find someone more deserving to villainize.

dude thats bull !! you want to know why he is down in AAA still, look at his numbers agenst rightys (a lot of them at the show) 4.6 era 69 hits in 70 innings with twenty walks and 71k. . that is why i think he is still down. . leftys its a diffrent story .77 era with 23 hits in 35 innings 7 walks and 23k. . . if he could only face leftys he should be up!! but he can't, keep him down a lil longer till we KNOW he can throw agenst right handed hitting !!
