« Manny Ramirez Rumors: Thursday | Main | Nationals Acquire Alberto Gonzalez »
3:29pm: Bay to the Dodgers? Jennifer Langosch says it's possible.
3:00pm: Rosenthal has a source saying Bay to the Rays is off "unless a miracle happens." He has Bay headed to Boston once again.
2:43pm: MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo says there is no done deal - the Rays might not make Brignac available.
2:11pm: MLB.com's Bill Chastain with the scoop - the Rays have acquired Jason Bay for Reid Brignac and Jeff Niemann. The Rays haven't confirmed it yet though, and Rosenthal says the Bucs want to replace Niemann with other prospects. I wonder if Bay would DH for the Rays.
Will we see a Jack Wilson trade next, or will that wait until the offseason? Brignac, 22, is hitting .257/.304/.429 in 91 Triple A games. He probably isn't ready yet. Baseball America still expects him to develop into a solid offensive-minded shortstop.
Niemann, 25, has a 3.53 ERA in 18 Triple A starts this year. He'll probably go straight into the Pirates' rotation. Baseball America feels he has #2 or #3 starter stuff, but his star has dimmed in recent times.

YES!! Jason Bay, the CUBS killer, is out of the NLC!! Rays got a awsome player! GO RAYS AND CUBBIES!
Posted by: cubs land | July 31, 2008 at 02:13 PM
doesn't manny already play in boston?
Posted by: davidsmarch | July 31, 2008 at 02:13 PM
wow devil rays just got better.
Posted by: sirpenguin45 | July 31, 2008 at 02:13 PM
love this deal.
Posted by: Guitar Hero | July 31, 2008 at 02:14 PM
Seems a little light compared to what was being offered in the three way trade but still an upgrade for pittsburg.
Posted by: joemorgan=#1 | July 31, 2008 at 02:15 PM
Looks like the Pirates screwed themselves. I bet Boston is super pissed at the Marlins if this was all it took to get Bay.
Posted by: walkoffblast | July 31, 2008 at 02:17 PM
SWEET, This is an awesome trade for the Rays.
Posted by: Braves1029 | July 31, 2008 at 02:17 PM
You here that?
That is the sound of Manny opening the Green Monster door and hiding in there for the rest of the summer
Posted by: UGotRPK3113 | July 31, 2008 at 02:17 PM
Wow the Pirates blow, what an awful trade for them.
Rack up another rape for Friedman and Co.
Posted by: gogopalehose | July 31, 2008 at 02:18 PM
nice pickup for the rays! they didnt give up that much and the pirates get two very good prospects, nice on both sides
Posted by: 04Forever | July 31, 2008 at 02:18 PM
The Red Sox now HAVE to make a move. The Yanks and Rays have gotten better...the Sox haven't done s***. Are they giving up this season or what?
Posted by: Lincecum55_CyYoung | July 31, 2008 at 02:18 PM
Like this deal for Pittsburgh. No point in keeping Bay- by the time they're a contender, he'll be on the decline- and now they've got a nice SP with a No. 2/3 ceiling and an All Star caliber SS they can pair with Alvarez (once he signs) on the left side of the infield. Light at the end of the tunnel?
Posted by: milehigh78 | July 31, 2008 at 02:18 PM
Theres a missing piece to this deal. There has to be, because if not, Bill Mazeroski will be calling to the head of the PIrates GM.
Posted by: yanks26ngoin | July 31, 2008 at 02:19 PM
Arent the Rays full of talent all the way through there orginzation?
Posted by: cubs land | July 31, 2008 at 02:19 PM
Lincecum55_CyYoung, its funny you say that cause its starting to feel like that with me, i hate to say it
Posted by: 04Forever | July 31, 2008 at 02:19 PM
How has ESPN not even mentioned this yet?
Posted by: MJJ2728 | July 31, 2008 at 02:20 PM
This trade as stated sucks for the Bucs. no amount of rationalization will make it better.
Posted by: enchinga | July 31, 2008 at 02:20 PM
I like this deal for Tampa Bay. Neimann was probably never going to get a fair shake as a starter in Tampa Bay's rotation, and with Beckham looming in a few years Brignac might not have gotten a fair shake either. In this case, Tampa's excess is Pittsburgh's gold.
I love how ESPN has a whole special dedicated to the trade deadline and they haven't even reported anything yet.
Posted by: MattyMets | July 31, 2008 at 02:20 PM
Wow, great trade for the rays. If the sox are still intent on getting rid of manny, then they'll be finishing third this year.
Posted by: Mr. Tauntaun | July 31, 2008 at 02:20 PM
Obviously good for TB too. Still, you know the PIT fans are gonna be up in arms about not getting Price, Davis, or Hellickson. Ridiculous. I think the Bucs coulda got one or two lesser prospects thrown in, but not one of the big 3. So impressed by the TB front office. Wish my O's were as thoughtful and patient.
Posted by: milehigh78 | July 31, 2008 at 02:20 PM
this just goes right back to my point that when the red sox come asking for players the price is high but when other teams such as the yanks or rays do they lower their standards. completely ridiculous
Posted by: CSIZZL3 | July 31, 2008 at 02:21 PM
Can someone please lock Ned Colletti in a very dark room for the next 40 minutes to make sure he does not try and trade for a pathetic Jack Wilson...
Posted by: MikeClarke | July 31, 2008 at 02:21 PM
If ESPN hasnt mentioned it yet, it could also be FALSE...
Posted by: yanks26ngoin | July 31, 2008 at 02:21 PM
As a Pirate fan, I am now offically done with this organization. Hope they move. They are a joke with the Steelers and now the Pens winning.
Trade with best player for a lighht hitting SS and a 4th/5th starter.
Where is the nearest bridge?
Posted by: pghman77 | July 31, 2008 at 02:21 PM
I like this trade on both sides, especially because this will allow the Rats to finally rid themselves of Jack Wilson. Granted, I would've preferred Hermida over the players they received, but still not a bad haul. Bay was doing them nothing, and this is much more than they would've got for him last year.
Posted by: m3th0ds | July 31, 2008 at 02:22 PM
the bosox-marlins deal seems like it was all a joke for bay...the rays are giving LESS than what the pirates would have got in the manny trade...it may have just been for tampa to push up thier price and they stayed put...
if so, nice job tampa FO.
Posted by: j dello | July 31, 2008 at 02:22 PM
Yeah ESPN is awful- almost all old news and nothing that may be about to break.
Tim can you do a TV show too next year ?
Posted by: kinsler5 | July 31, 2008 at 02:23 PM
pghman77, i admire you for hagning on this long
Posted by: 04Forever | July 31, 2008 at 02:23 PM
I find it hard to believe the Red Sox could not have just dealt from their own farm system for Bay and topped this modest Bay deal.
They then could have moved Manny out of town for something separate with the Dodgers to restock their system.
Posted by: MikeClarke | July 31, 2008 at 02:24 PM
The deal isn't perfect for the Pirates, but hey... it shows they're actually moving in the right direction here. Maybe in 3 or 4 years they'll field a team with watching.
Posted by: FineHamAbounds | July 31, 2008 at 02:25 PM
"There has to be, because if not, Bill Mazeroski will be calling to the head of the PIrates GM."
Who cares about Bill Mazeroski? He shouldn't even be in the hof.
Maybe Reid Brignac will hit a walk off hr in a future world series and do nothing else in his career except put up less than average numbers and make it to the hof.
Posted by: Posada20 | July 31, 2008 at 02:26 PM
I love Jason Bay as a player, but the Pirates needed a change. They were going nowhere fast.
Posted by: Tom THE man | July 31, 2008 at 02:26 PM
This is a sad day for baseball. Next on the Pirates radar is probably signing Charlie Sheen to pitch, and bailing Wesley Snipes out of jail to play LF as the replacement.
Doesn't matter who you are a fan of; the Pirates have clearly decided to drive their team into the ground.
How is this better then getting Hermida? Heck, how is this better then the supplemental compesation picks they could have gotten for Bay?
Posted by: baxter4218 | July 31, 2008 at 02:26 PM
So in conclusion, the Pirates held out for a guy who might be an above average SS in 3 years, and a 4th or 5th starter?
Nobody else offered them a better package for Jason Bay? Seriously? Where were the Dodgers on this? Jesus Christ.
Posted by: kensai | July 31, 2008 at 02:27 PM
I don't believe it yet. Theres gotta be other prospects in this.
Posted by: scully0505 | July 31, 2008 at 02:27 PM
Im confused. . . . how was this deal better than the one the Braves offered of Lillibridge, Jones and two Pitchers from the minors?
Posted by: drumzalicious | July 31, 2008 at 02:27 PM
There are probably one or two more prospects in the deal. My guess is a pitcher and a hitter from the lower minors. The Rays have a ton of talent down there also, so it could be good prospects, just not close to the bigs.
Posted by: Sean Gibson | July 31, 2008 at 02:27 PM
Dodgers offer Chin Lung Hu, James McDonald and Cory Wade.
Just as ridiculous of a package as Reid Brignac and Niemann.
:o
Posted by: kensai | July 31, 2008 at 02:28 PM
Mayb boston will be smart enough to atleast get wilson and/or grabow....
....prob not...
....thanks again florida for ruining the miricle trade
Posted by: elevenahead | July 31, 2008 at 02:28 PM
Contrary to CSIZZL3's opinion, the world is not conspiring against Boston. Especially when he thinks everyone is out to help the Yankees. That's funny.
The latest trade proposals had the Red Sox getting rid of Manny for 2 months along with some low level talent. In return they would get Bay along with Garbow. That trade was slanted way to heavily towards to the Red Sox. It's no shocker that it didn't go through as reported.
Posted by: bjsguess | July 31, 2008 at 02:29 PM
BTW - Great move by the Pirates. While the returns haven't been as high as fans had hoped for, the past few trades have added immediate depth to the club and netted some highly touted prospects. The Pirates finally get it.
Posted by: bjsguess | July 31, 2008 at 02:30 PM
I really like this trade for the Rays, I'm really happy for them. I'll be rooting for them come playoff time.
Posted by: Morgasm | July 31, 2008 at 02:30 PM
What a great deal for the Rays. They sold the Pirates on two overrated prospects and nabbed a good right handed hitter. Outstanding!
Posted by: tampabaysportsblog | July 31, 2008 at 02:30 PM
A steal for the Rays. I agree that with the Rays, Yankees, and Angels makes major aquisitions that the Red Sox no longer look as good as they did coming into the year. I wouldn't be surprised if the Red Sox missed the playoffs.
Also, Huntington is doing terrible with his first 2 trades. He declined Lillibridge, Jones, and 2 other prospects yet settles for only Niemann and Brignac. Right before this he gets only Tabata, Ohlendorf, Karstens, and McCutchen. He sucks.
Also, the Marlins must've offered pretty much nothing for Manny. Hermida and Tucker would far beat this package. Heck, they could've gotten Bay instead of Manny for Hermida and Tucker.
So, to sum it up, the Rays rock, Huntington sucks, and the Marlins won't part with anyone for Manny. And that deal's dead, officially.
Posted by: Joe | July 31, 2008 at 02:31 PM
bjsguess-You probably would have got better prospects with the 2 first round draft picks after 2009.
Or, uh, you know, the 4 prospect package the Braves offered earlier.
:o

Nate McClouth to Boston for Sean Casey..
Seriously, what a freaking joke,..
Pittsburgh, where baseball careers die.

Hold the phone, deal isn't done.. Pirates don't want Niemann, they want Davis and want to add another prospect.

I don't believe this story because if he works for mlb.com how come when I go to mlb.com there is no mention of the trade. Don't you think if a reporter for mlb.com had the story they would have posted it on their website?
Posted by: BucSox | July 31, 2008 at 02:33 PM
I think this is a fantastic deal for Pittsburgh. Smart. Exactly what they should be doing.
Bums me out though, b/c I'm a Reds fan!
Posted by: Dan | July 31, 2008 at 02:35 PM
Please God... we want davis...
Posted by: scully0505 | July 31, 2008 at 02:35 PM
Ha! CSizzl3, what are you talking about?!! Poor little rich boy. You don't get your toy and cry foul. What a joke. The Rays were offering a FAR superior deal if what we were hearing is right. First, it sounds like the Marlins weren't willing to deal EITHER Tucker or Stanton. Second, Brignac is LIGHT YEARS ahead of Stanton- a one dimensional slugger who hasn't played a game above Low A (granted, he's young and could develop into a stud, but Brignac's already there; BTW- take a look at Brignac's stats at HIGH A and talk to me about Stanton being worth more). SS is the toughest position on the field at which to find a quality prospect...to say nothing of a quality prospect capable of hitting 25+ HRs. Brignac's 22 and hardly struggling at Triple A. No, his numbers aren't great, but for much of the season, he was leading the league in doubles, while one of (if not THE) youngest player in the IL.
On top of that, the Bucs got Niemann, who BA considers a borderline 2/3 (as opposed to a 4/5). Yeah, that sucks. Except, oh yeah, that's what Tucker profiles as! 'tards.
Granted, the Hermida inclusion makes the three way better (as they always are), but the Bucs can't effect what the Marlins will or won't give up and they're better off taking a good deal than making no deal. Bay in the offseason was no lock to generate any more interest.
Posted by: milehigh78 | July 31, 2008 at 02:36 PM
mlb.com gets the stories later than we do!
My daughter is an intern there and they find out with the rest of us.
Posted by: yankeegirl49 | July 31, 2008 at 02:36 PM
According to Dejan:
3:26 p.m.: Just spoke with Brignac's agent, and this was news to him.
Posted by: scully0505 | July 31, 2008 at 02:37 PM
So add Irod, Nady and Marte and subtract posada and farnsworth and the yankees are all of a sudden better than the red sox? Not buying that one.
Posted by: walkoffblast | July 31, 2008 at 02:37 PM
pghman77, that report is 40 minutes old
and that is an MLB website. Chastain is dependable.
Posted by: Sean Gibson | July 31, 2008 at 02:39 PM
Wow I am very impressed by this website and the Rays beat writer. He beat all the major media guys to this I'm watching the trade deadline special and they have not even mentioned this yet.
Posted by: rebuilding | July 31, 2008 at 02:44 PM
There was an update to the mlb.com article that said there are conflicting reports so it seems that story was broke prematurely.
Posted by: BucSox | July 31, 2008 at 02:45 PM
NICE
Posted by: scully0505 | July 31, 2008 at 02:46 PM
So the Rays want Bay, but deem Davis, Price, Hellickson, and now Brignac all unavilable?
Sorry, I would not discuss a trade with Tampa anymore.
Posted by: pghman77 | July 31, 2008 at 02:47 PM
So many morons out there. Tell me, Joe... How exactly is Lillibridge, Jones, Rohrbaugh and Locke better than Brignac and Niemann (and I'm sure there'll be a couple low level guys in there, but regardless...)? Lillibridge is AWFUL...always has been, always will. Jones is TERRIBLE. Same story. Both Rohrbaugh and Locke have potential, but they ain't exactly lighting the world on fire in the LOW minors, so it's anything but assured that they'll even MAKE the majors. The Rays deal is EASILY an improvement over the Braves offer. As for Hermida/Tucker- I'll agree it's better (but not WAY better; a SS as promising as Brignac is difficult to find...more so than an OF'er), but who says the Marlins were offering that?! Clearly they weren't interested and backed out or else we'd be talking about Bay going to Florida or Boston. Ridiculous how people manipulate ideas to frame their own perspective as the correct one.
Posted by: milehigh78 | July 31, 2008 at 02:47 PM
If Brignac isn't in it, I take everything back...Pittsburgh is getting hosed.
Posted by: milehigh78 | July 31, 2008 at 02:49 PM
Come on rays back out. Remember you are not supposed to be good until next year.
Posted by: walkoffblast | July 31, 2008 at 02:49 PM
"So add Irod, Nady and Marte and subtract posada and farnsworth and the yankees are all of a sudden better than the red sox? Not buying that one"
Irod better than Molina, Nady better than Gardner and Marte better than Farnsworth.
Does it make them better than the Sox? That remains to be seen, but it does make them better than they were last week.
Yanks are ONE game worse than the Sox...I would say they have a darn good chance of being better.
Posted by: yankeegirl49 | July 31, 2008 at 02:50 PM
Jeniffer Langosch:
Updating an earlier blog entry, there are conflicting reports about whether or not Bay will in fact be headed to Tampa Bay.
A short while ago, a source in Pittsburgh corroborated an earlier MLB.com report that Pirates outfielder Jason Bay is going to be traded to the Rays before 4 p.m. ET this afternoon. As reported earlier, the Pirates are believed to be satisifed with taking shortstop Reid Brignac and pitcher Jeff Niemann in exchange for Bay.
However, it could be a little more complicated that that. According to another industry source in Pittsburgh, the Rays still are not believed to be offering both Brignac and Niemann. One, it is not known who, is deemed unavailable, along with Wade Davis, David Price and Jeremy Hellick
Posted by: scully0505 | July 31, 2008 at 02:50 PM
Sounds like we're looking at either brignac or nielson with one of the big 3?
Posted by: scully0505 | July 31, 2008 at 02:54 PM
The idiots are coming out in full force today. I get the idea there are a crapload of people logged on here today who have no idea how the trade deadline works.
Posted by: nrmax88 | July 31, 2008 at 02:56 PM
ha i read it wrong my bad
Posted by: scully0505 | July 31, 2008 at 02:59 PM
I can't believe the Rays didn't accept that trade. It was a totall trade. they were never going to use Niemann and would've used Brignac for only 2 or 3 years. I cant believe they chocked.
Posted by: Joe | July 31, 2008 at 03:02 PM
"3:00pm: Rosenthal has a source saying Bay to the Rays is off "unless a miracle happens." He has Bay headed to Boston once again."
His source must be high
Posted by: icedrake523 | July 31, 2008 at 03:02 PM
:shakes head: Niemann+Brignac should have been done.
Posted by: V | July 31, 2008 at 03:04 PM
Anyone else wondering if Tampa just pulled off what the red sox were accused of doing? That being attempting to keep Bay of the others team with faux negotiations.
Posted by: walkoffblast | July 31, 2008 at 03:06 PM
milehigh your a moron, your going to tell me youd turn down hermidia and hunter jones and ryan tucker for niemann and brignac? birgnac is so far from being in the bigs its ridiculous. all his numbers are low and you point out he lead in doubles for a part of the season. wow. do me a favor and go play in traffic. the bucs are stupid they gave marte and nady away to the yankees for 4 throw aways, people that werent even in the top 25 of the yankees organization. ohlendorf? really? give me a freaking break. and now your going to tell me that if they trade for a light hitting SS and a decent middle rotation starter. go ahead and do it. if the red sox dont make the playoffs ill be pissed but ill take great joy in watching the pirates flounder for the next 10 years because they mortaged their best players for garbage.
Posted by: CSIZZL3 | July 31, 2008 at 03:08 PM
The Rays wouldn't come up off Brignac? Are you kidding?
As a Pirates fan, I sincerely thank whoever the Rays GM is.
Posted by: D Sanchez | July 31, 2008 at 03:09 PM
And will people please stop comparing Xavier Nady with Jason Bay?? Nady is playing waaay above his normal level and every GM knew it. The Pirates got a sufficient return for him and a lefty specialist. Not a great return, but fair enough.
Bay should have brought in far more than Brignac and Niemann. Wait until the offseason and revisit the subject.
Posted by: D Sanchez | July 31, 2008 at 03:13 PM
I wonder why Frank Wren despite his braves sucking this year wont add Bay when he can. there is nothing wrong with giving up those that he offered and adding maybe another top prospect instead of a low level pitcher. give them a higher one and keep building the braves for the seasons to come. we have a 1B and now we need a Beast of an Outfielder since Kotsay is going to be gone and Blanco isnt that great, Josh Anderson is better than Blanco.
Posted by: drumzalicious | July 31, 2008 at 03:19 PM
if the rays didn't make this deal because of reid brignac then there's something wrong with the organization. The Rays clearly don't want to spend money to win now and they will always try to get ready for the future which will never come if they keep letting golden opportunities such as this one just die.
This is coming from a die-hard Rays fan. I cannot believe they didn't pull the trigger on this deal. As a fan, I am extremely disappointed in the organization.
Posted by: brandonk989 | July 31, 2008 at 03:20 PM
I wish the Rays had been able to make the deal for Bay.. oh well.
Interesting: Bay may have been picked up by the late-swooping Dodgers http://trades.mlblogs.com/archives/2008/07/bay_in_dodger_blue.html
Posted by: DRayDude | July 31, 2008 at 03:23 PM
btw- that was a link to Jenifer Langosch
Posted by: DRayDude | July 31, 2008 at 03:25 PM
brandonk,
In fairness when I was just listening to ESPN radio they said the Pirates originally were gonna take Niemann and Brignac but at the last minute demanded Davis or Price or Heckllison(or however it's spelled).
I honestly think the Rays tried an strategic move and pulled Brignac off the table at the last minute to see if the Pirates would panic and back off the price and it backfired in their face. Maybe they felt with that three way dead they could get Bay at a discount and they lost out.
Posted by: BucSox | July 31, 2008 at 03:29 PM
CSIZZL3- The problem with your point is that you're assuming the Marlins were actually MAKING THAT OFFER! Apparently that was little more than the machination of some over eager writer looking for a scoop or speculating on Marlins prospects. As I wrote in the post you're referring to, the three way WOULD HAVE been better for the Bucs, IF the Marlins were actually willing to part with the three players in question. They clearly were not.
And where are you getting this 'light hitting SS' garbage? You're so enamored of Stanton and his line at low A? Brignac put up a .326/.382/.557 line at HIGH A a couple years ago and slammed 21 jacks...as a SHORTSTOP! Last year he had 17 in Double A, along with another 30 doubles! That's 'light-hitting?!' Seriously?! How many SS prospects can you name with comparable stats. Better yet, how many MLB SSs not named Hanley, have put up lines like that over the last few years? A few, I'm sure, but not a ton and those that have are generally considered stars (unless, like Tejada, they've pissed the world off).
'Go play in traffic'? Grow up.
Posted by: milehigh78 | July 31, 2008 at 03:37 PM
Oh, and Hunter Jones is BARELY a prospect.
Posted by: milehigh78 | July 31, 2008 at 03:38 PM
