« Dodgers Interested In Maddux, Byrd | Main | Marlins, Red Sox, Pirates Talking Manny Trade »
9:56pm: The early pull raised a few eyebrows, amid the Bengie Molina speculation. It remains speculation for now though.
9:18pm: Just heard from Will Carroll that the Marlins' Mike Jacobs was pulled from the lineup this evening. Could just be a defensive substitution though.

Looks like the game is over now. Evans was pulled after just one at bat.

Scratch that. He pinch hit in the 5th, and that was his only at bat. Maybe a double switch?

He was taken out in the 7th which could have been just for defensive purposes since the Marlins had a 4 run lead. They moved Cantu from 3rd to 1st and placed Amezaga at 3rd.

jacobs is always pulled in games for defense

The Marlins always pull Jacobs late in the game for defense.

Defensive sub... that's about all that looked like to me.

Nope, don't want to. I really hope the Sox keep Manny, even if it is Bay. I think I jinxed them by saying in my blog:
"I trust Theo to do a good trade." Ugh...

rotoworld is reporting it could be that he may be getting traded in a deal involving bengi molina
Posted by: redsfan | July 30, 2008 at 09:25 PM
I was watching and as many have already stated, I just thought it was purely a late inning with a lead defensive substitution.

He was taken out going into the 7th, more likely for defense than anything else with a 4-1 lead. Evans didn't start, he Pinch Hit.

Probably in preparation for a Rhodes for Jacobs straight up deal.
(Or not)

Bengie Molina in the lineup and due up in th second... someone might want to tell the Giants that Rotoworld just made that trade! LOL

How bad are you on defense when you are replaced by Jorge Cantu?
Posted by: ucfknights | July 30, 2008 at 09:31 PM
They do this to put Cantu at 1st and Helms at 3rd, they do this alot, but who knows, I heard something about Jacobs for Molina of the Giants? Anyone know anything?
Posted by: FLAMarlinsFan | July 30, 2008 at 09:35 PM
ucfknights/ 8 errors in 75 games for Jacobs... that's a decent amount for a first baseman. And its more a move to get Cantu off of third but Cantu might be a better defensive first baseman.

Yeah but tonight it was Amezaga to 3B and Cantu to 1B which seemed slightly odd, Helms pinch hit later on in the game. Also Jacobs is below league average in all the fielding categories listed at baseball reference.

Sounds like it's nothing. Bengie is currently catching for the Giants, if there was a deal, why would Jacobs get pulled while Molina is allowed to start?
Posted by: sfgreg | July 30, 2008 at 10:00 PM
The Giants might be waiting to see if they can get a catcher like Laird first and Marlins are just more careful. Rich Aurilia to Twins for Boof Bonser, Bonser and pitching prospect for Laird?

If they made this trade, then the Giants probably have a deal to trade Randy Winn and move Bowker to right. I doubt that they are going to bench him because he has the potential to grow into a decent major leaguer and he cant do that on the bench.
