« Grudzielanek Wants To Play Two Or Three More Years | Main | Odds and Ends: Phillips, Chacon, Hewitt, Griffey »

Rosenthal's Latest: Padilla, Manny, Beltre, Dunn

Rumor man Ken Rosenthal has a new column up.

  • At least three teams have inquired on the Rangers' Vicente Padilla: the Mets, Yankees, and Brewers.  Jon Daniels is looking for "quality young pitching."
  • Manny Ramirez's $20MM option for '09 isn't a lock.  It's a tough call - .900 OPS players on one-year deals don't grow on trees.
  • Rosenthal suggests David DeJesus or Melky Cabrera would be nice fits for the Diamondbacks, who aren't looking for a rental.  He also speculates on names like Brian Giles, David Dellucci, and Randy Winn.  Note: Rosenthal is playing GM here, not relaying inside info of trade talks.
  • Rosenthal believes Matt Stairs would be a nice addition for the Dodgers, and notes that the Dodgers and Blue Jays have spoken.  The Jays' direction for '08 is still uncertain though.
  • Still sounds like it'd take a "knockout offer" to pry Rich Harden loose from the A's.
  • The A's are said to like Mariners third baseman Adrian Beltre.  He can block trades to eight unknown clubs though.
  • Adam Dunn isn't generating much trade interest yet.
  • KC's Ron Mahay is "drawing significant interest."  The trade market for lefty relievers is fairly robust.

Comments

If Padilla is garnering intrest, Texas should sell high. Hes another guy that his peripherals dont match his ERA. He may be this years Gagne

When Blues Traveler bassist Bob Sheehan died of a drug overdose shortly after moving to New Orleans, the band's then-morbidly obese frontman John Popper commented, "Bobby moving to New Orleans was like me moving to McDonald's."

Just sayin' ... Milwaukee might wanna think twice before pulling the trigger on a deal for Padilla, especially considering he'd be playing his half his games across the street from a brewery.

Would a package of Bryan Anderson (hitting .330 in AAA, a Ludwick/Barton MLB ready player and a pitching prospect be enough to net the Cardinasl a Rich Harden type pitcher?

Can Padilla play left field??? If not, then no thanks...

I'd say Padilla is definitely dealt.

i cant believe teams arent interested in dunn. I know the reds will not get back a top prospect or nething like that but you would think a contending team would take 20 homers and about 50 rbis or more for the 2nd half of the year to make a run. I know he strikes out alot but he also gets on base and if you put him in a better lineup he might see better pitches to hit. walt could also package him with weathers or affeldt to up the return.

HAHAHA, good luck with getting DeJesus, Arizona. Maybe Webb, and Upton? And before all of you jump the gun to criticize me, I'm just stating the value of DDJ to KC, and realize he might not be worth it on the ARZ end, but means that much to KC.

Dunn is hitting .220 with those 20 homeruns and 88 strikeouts. It seems that teams could get that production a lot cheaper than what Dunn is owed. He does get on base at a .380 clip but he is not paid to get on base, he is paid to hit.

Harden may have finally (hold your breath) figured out his injury woes. His split-finger fastball was causing too much stress on his shoulder, so he completely took it out of his repertoire, as well as limiting his slider to a few times a game.

That being said, for Beane to trade one of the top 3 pitchers in baseball (when healthy), the offer would have to be nothing short of incredible, and my guess is it would have to start with Rasmus. Remember, Harden is signed cheaply through '09.

Rosenthal is dead on that the rangers would have to get young, ml ready pitching. i can see where teams would be hesitant to give up solid prospects for him, but he's had a good year so far and is signed to a reasonable contract (team option in 2010 i believe). This would be a sell high situation for the rangers, but would be hard to justify to the casual fan unless they received some pitchers back who can make an impact very soon.

When I saw the Yankees linked to Padilla I literally figuratively threw up all over myself. There is not a somewhat productive pitcher in the majors I'd rather avoid for the reasons so eloquently stated by MikeMeyer above. He friggin' killed a guy.

Hey I'm not going to criticize you. We all know how hard mediocrity is to come by in KC.

That actually hurts to read, my eyes are burning. How are you functional enough to work a keyboard?

These guys apparently do great work.

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Ya right! I'm not even trying to be mean. But at the very least for Beane to give the Cardinals one of the best pitchers in baseball (when healthy) it would take Colby Rasmus, Bryan Anderson, Chris Perez, and Tyler Herron. I don't think that those are questionable. I realize that Cards fans might realize that's a steep price to pay for an injury prone ace, but also remember Beane doesn't need to trade Harden. We could be buyers for all A's fans know. So Cards fans have to think about whether the possibilty of getting a top 5 pitcher or big parts of their future.

I might see the Brew Crew going after Randy Winn, none of their top prospect will go for him, but maybe a B level guy and a low level nobody.

AriGoldisaG,

Rich Harden is going to cost a lot but I'm not even sure if I would give up Rasmus for Harden. No way they give up Rasmus, Bryan Anderson, Chris Perez, and Tyler Herron for Harden. Maybe Anderson, Perez, and Herron, but not Rasmus.

Well Joe sorry, but I doubt Beane does that. Remember I think I said this; We don't need to trade him. You need him, I think you're a cards fan. And I'm not sure if you've read moneyball, but one of Beane's main rulesis the day you say you need to make a trade you're F*cked. But aside from that, his talent makes it worth it, it's his injury's that make him a concern. So don't be suprised if the Cards do this while they despiratley plunge for a playoff berth.

I'm a Cubs fan, so you know how much I hate the Cardinals. I hope they make that deal because the Cubs will probably still win the central this year and probably again next year. Then the Cards would be stuck with nothing for '10 and beyond. They won't do that because they haven't even checked in on Sabathia, so why sell the farm for Harden. If Beane demands that much, then Harden likely won't be traded.

My turn....HAHAHAHAHA!

That's more than Beane got for Mulder and Hudson. And both of those guys could stay healthy. Beane would be lucky to get a similar package which would be a starter, reliever and positional player. I even think the original proposal was too much for a guy who never pitches. Granted Harden's good when he's healthy but he never is. There's a better chance he breaks down before the trade deadline than there is that he logs all his starts, so this is probably all a moot issue. And if ANYONE is going to be leary about injury prone pitchers....don't you think it would be the Cardinals?

So now my comments are SPAM? Seriously? This site has taken a dramatic nosedive. Don't know how much more I can take.

KC will not trade DeJesus. The Cubs tried to get him and KC said that want to keep him, so why would KC want to change their way of thought? I got your back PJH. I live the Quad Cities, where the Cardinals have their class A team, and ill tell you what, that Colby Rasms is a stud player. Any teams should try and get him. Three years or so, he will be a Josh Hamilton. Enjoyed watching him here the QC.

guys this idea that the cardinals would give up anything like that package for harden is crazy. rasmus and perez r untouchable, end of story. anderson could and should be traded but he has big time value being a very good young offensive catcher. not salty value yet but hes close. the as dont need a young catcher having suzuki(if they still think hes a starter for them). if we did a deal anderson, barton, and pitching prospect like stated would be fair value. if oakland didnt want to do that so what. let harden get hurt next year and they could get stuck with nothing. the cards dont need rotation help but harden would sure make sense for that package.

and ad for dejesus, that kc guy is talking stupid but its not really an issue because kc doesnt want to trade him. i always hear rumors of how he might be traded and i dont think the royals ever shop him. the royals and the fans really like him. plus hes barely above average at best. id take ludwick, schumaker, and ankiel over him.

The A's want Beltre? Uh.. do they know that the Mariners are a division rival and are unlikely to make any impact deals with an interdivisional foe? Do they also know that Beltre makes like 13 million a year? That would about double their payroll wouldn't it?

The only way I see the A's offering something for Beltre is if Eric Chavez was involved. But why the hell would Seattle be interested in Chavez? The guy isn't the hitter he used to be and spends more time on the DL than Harden does. (Thats saying something).

the cards could also offer duncan instead of barton and for the pitching prospect the as could choose from boggs or garcia. i think that would be a lot of talent to give up but harden is good so that seems reasonable. cards also get a young lefty reliever in the deal too. nobody great, just decent. i like it. ill call beane tomorrow.

i hate typekey.

LOL! Cubs prospects! LOL!

while your talking to Beane, can you ask him if we can reverse the Mulder trade? or possibly, since he got the Cardinals so good on that trade, if he would be willing to take a lesser deal to get Harden?

Harden is not worth Rasmus. Not by a long shot.

Sure Beane can hold onto Harden BUT Rich is just one pitch away from having ZERO trade value. If Beane can land a top prospect now for the guy he should.

I bet he is sayign the same thing about Blanton...
