1. How is there no interst in Huff? I know he's a liability on defense but he is raking.
2. I would love to see gline back. The braves need at least one other guy besides Jurjens in the rotation with a lower then 5 era.
3.Moving maddux to the dodgers is a great move! Who cares if they are division rivals the padres are not in contention why should they care. They should have shopped peavy too. They wll not compete this year obviously and if reports are correct on them trying to cut payrll in half they will not compete next year.

Who is "gline"?
Glavine can go suck a lemon. Hampton too.
Jurjjens and Campillo + 2 FA starters isn't too shabby.

The braves may almost have to bring Glavine back if they dont go out and get 2 proven SP this offseason. they cannot afford to go into the season with 4 very unproven pitchers + JJ who shouldnt have to shoulder the load next year

LandMan-
Suck a lemon? Nice. Who are these two FA starters. That's sounds pricey and risky...prisky. And relying on Campillo doesn't strike me as a wise move. I know he's been pretty good, but these guys that come out of nowhere usually get hammered in Year 2, once the league has figured 'em out. Not saying Glavine-or Gline-is the answer; just saying...

Glavine said he was done because of the injury. Did he back off that statement?

Mr. Morgan-
Good to have baseball royalty among us. I don't understand it either. Huff's been absolutely incredible, he's really not that old, and there's plenty of precedent. Hell, you could make a case that his last 2-3 seasons are the aberration and that what he's doing NOW (and what he did early with Tampa Bay) is the REAL Huff. He's not a good fit on a crappy team rebuilding around youth, but he seems like a perfect addition for a club fighting for a postseason berth. I've said it before, but if the O's kicked in Huff's '09 salary (or most of it, at least), an inner-division deal to send the slugger back to Tampa Bay for a modest package involving Brignac, would be ideal for both teams (then again, with the way the Rays are playing, maybe they don't need it).
I'm not going to rack my brain trying to think of others since they'd all be hypothetical anyway, but I can't imagine the O's would really prefer to hang on to a 31 year old DH/1B/LF...or a 36 year old 3B for that matter, over, say, another piece of the puzzle for 2010 and beyond. But what the hell do I know? Looking at McPhail's moves, non-moves, and quotes, I losing faith that the man really understands the patience and single-minded focus required to build a contender from the ground up.
Sherrill should've been flipped at the deadline and will never again have the same value he had at that point. Huff and Mora may continue to hit, but they'll also continue to age. In 2010- the earliest that the O's could contend- they'll be 33 and 38, respectively. Lovely.
Baltimore's FO wanted to change the culture surrounding the club and they've done an admirable job, but its nothing more than a stopgap unless they continue to BUILD. Maybe the offers just aren't there. Obviously there's nothing Andy Mac and Co. can do about that. But if it's a matter of scratching out a .500 season, it's sheer lunacy. THIS is the time to deal. It doesn't matter if both Huff and Mora finish strong, they will not have the value, over the winter, that they have in a playoff race. Teams that might be interested in adding their potent offense in the hopes it might be the missing piece of their post-season puzzle, will lose their zeal in the off-season. In the end, it's that kind of foot-dragging that will continue to postpone the Orioles' OWN playoff hopes.
Then again, maybe McPhail's smarter and more patient than I give him credit for. After all, at this rate, both guys will be Type A FA's! You don't think a 37 year old who has built his home...his life...in the area would accept arbitration, do you?!

I believe Glavine was quoted as saying the chances of him pitching next year are "50-50 at best". This coming off the realization that Tommy John surgery would not be required.

milehigh-
I didn't even think how perfect a fit that would be. Aybar is filling in well but I don't trust him down the stretch now if Longoria comes back full strength Huff would not really be needed but if the O's took on most of the contract I think Brignac would be legit.
Land-
Sorry I meant glavine but g-line would be a pretty sweet name.

There is an article on the Baltimore Sun right now that talks about how MacPhail considers the money factor. It doesn't say he's a fiscal conservative as his rep might imply but it does say that it is something he weighs in. So, with that in mind, I think the bigger issue with Huff might be the mixture of the 10M owed to him from now until the end of '09 that makes teams think about it. Myself personally thinks the Os are better off collecting the prospects (say, lower A high potential guys) and eating some salary to make it more enticing. I even think eating more than 50% is solid. Imagine taking Huff at his cusrrent production, and having him on the '09 books at about a total cost of 5M? That's worth something, right?

I am very surprised we have not heard any rumors regarding Jimmy Rollins....Yes you can make a very good statement that he is the leader of the Phillies and that he is the reigning MVP... but he constantly runs off his mouth and is starting to get booed by the fans in almost every at bat....im not saying he is sure to get traded but he might be a hotter commodity this winter over say Jack Wilson... and he surely would give the phillies some nice prospects....

There is no interest in Huff because he's owed $10M plus next season, he's a defensive liability at 1B and 3B, and he's just as likely to have a poor season as a great one.
Mora is owed $9M next season and has a full no-trade clause. The O's couldn't move him even if they wanted to without his permission, and if he did it would likely only be to Philadelphia so he could still live at his home east of Baltimore. He has six children in elementary school right now, and I seriously doubt he would move to another city.

Rollins to the Cards for Colby Rasmus?I'm sure not.
How about to the White Sox for Swisher, Fields and Thornton?
The Sox get an elite leadoff man to follow the big boppers. Ramirez can stay at 2B or move to center, where his defense will be better. The Sox simply become more complete while not hurting the team long term too bad. They can resign Crede or sign a free agent to take over without Fields.
Phillies get a quality bat in Swisher to either play right or take over in left for Burrell. In the NL with that ballpark he'd have huge numbers. Fields would give then a long term 3B with quality power. Thornton gives them the power lefty in the bullpen that they need.
Would Philly do this? I sure think the Sox would and it's seems like a solid deal for Philly if they planned to contend

Mora is a bigtime family man (but I guess having Quintuplets instantly makes you that!) so I find it very very very very very hard to imagine Mora would approve a trade to any team. Mora has meshed with the city of Baltimore very well and his family is entrenched. Just hard to believe he would uproot anyone just to play baseball.
I think Huff can be traded if the Os eat enough money to absorb the risk of Huff maybe having a bad season in '09. He will certainly help a team hit the ball for LH power this season. Consider this: His stats right now are comparable to Arod. Will he keep it up? Probably not for much longer in his overall career but he will probably have a few more 20 HR seasons in him. He's a legit bat at this point. The glove issue is a legit issue though.
