« Could Moyer Pitch To 50? | Main | Heyman's Latest: Lucchino, Manny, Rangers »
According to the Globe and Mail, the Blue Jays released outfielder Shannon Stewart today. He'd signed a minor league deal in February.
Stewart, 34, hit .240/.325/.303 in 200 plate appearances. He dealt with a sore groin and ankle sprain during the season. Stewart was paid $1.5MM. Adam Lind had an excellent July and seems entrenched in left at least for the rest of the year.

Are the Mets desperate enough yet to go get him?

The Jays had to make a last minute decision on keeping Stewart or Johnson in the spring. They chose Stewart and released Johnson where the Cubs snatched him up to be a great move. I bet the Jays are kicking themselves.

Doesn't this move make JP look like a genius? Signing him in the offseason him and keeping him instead of Reed Johnson who is hitting .300 in 77 games with the Cubs. Doesn't this remind you of the signings of Tomo Ohka, John Thomson and Victor Zambrano? They were all signed in the 05 season by JP and were all released before the end of the season. JP the next time you decide to sign someone please make sure you keep them for at least one year instead of releasing them later on in the season.

Tomo Ohka, John Thomson and Victor Zambrano?
All low risk low cost signings with possible big upside.

Unfortunately JP has made worse moves. Brandon Lyon, Chad Guadin etc etc etc etc.

I hope that Walt Jockety should sign Stewart to a minor league deal know that Adam Dunn is gone

Thx juiced for the comment. I couldn't dig up the amount of money they were getting.

Side note...
What about the Burnett deal three years ago. I think the terms in that deal for this year cost him the ability to move AJ at the deadline.

Stewart actually looked pretty good on his rehab assignment. He showed pretty decent bat speed, good foot speed, and made a diving catch.
He's not going to be a star or anything, but he could probably help someone as an extra guy.
