Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post reports the Rockies, in the hunt for a fifth starter, are pursuing Livan Hernandez as he clears waivers.
"'He's someone we have talked about in the past,' said [Clint] Hurdle, whose team made a late run at Hernandez as a free agent in February. Several Rockies players are pulling for the team to sign Hernandez (10-8, 5.48) as a fifth starter."
Hernandez was DFA'd on Friday and won't clear waivers until Tuesday. He still has $1.66 MM remaining on his contract.

It wouldn't be such a bad idea to sign Livan Hernandez. Right now, the Rockies starting rotation is terrible. For example, they have Glendon Rusch as a number three starter despite posting a 4.78 ERA there. They have Jorge De La Rosa as their fourth starter, who has pretty good stuff [78 strikeouts in 71.1 innings.], but has an ERA close to 7.00. Yikes! Then for their fifth starter [which I don't get], they have Valerio De Los Santos, who hasn't even started a game in the Majors since 2000. Why start someone who, hasn't played since 2005 and hasn't had a good year since 2003? I know he's only spot starting, but is the Rockies pitching depth really that bad? Why not start players like Taylor Buchholz or Jason Grilli? I know Grilli now is a full time relief pitcher, but he was a former top prospect as a starter [even though injuries and decreased velocity has slowed him down.] But with how bad the Rockies rotation is, it wouldn't be such a bad idea to try him out as a starter again. Or, more importantly, try starting Taylor Buchholz again? He does have good stuff to be a starter, and if he could get the proper training and tutoring to become a starter again, then he could excel at that. But it seems as if the Rockies like Buchholz better at a relief role more than starting him. Even though Livan Hernandez has struggled as of late, he would be a much better upgrade than any of the Rockie's 3-5 starters.

you have to be pretty desperate to need livo. i love the guy, but he's been a terrible pitcher for most of this season.

In the Cleveland ohio paper yesterday Paul Byrd had told the writer that if he clears waivers that he would agree to a trade the The Rockies .
As far as Hernandez goes you think the pitching for the Rockies now just wait until you geet a load of Hernandez he was cut because he was having problems getting past the 4th inning.
