« Keith Law's Latest: Players On The Move | Main | Red Sox Offer Minor League Deal To Borowski »
The Rockies and Pirates were in discussions about starter Ian Snell before the non-waiver trade deadline, but Pittsburgh's asking price of Franklin Morales was to high for the Rox to match, effectively killing the deal.
After another bad outing from one of their starters this week, however, and knowing they will look for a fifth starter via the waiver wire, the Rockies may have to revisit the Snell talks, as Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post thinks he would've been a "tantalizing option;" Renck also mentions Josh Fogg as an alternative for the Rox.
Fogg pitched for the Rockies in 2006 and Snell drew some interest from the Mets before the deadline.

Freddy Garcia?

Garcia is a definite option, but I'm sure there are plenty other teams interested in the veteran hurler. According to Buster Olney, he's scheduled to throw for scouts on Tuesday (Aug. 5).

I don't see how Josh Fogg has a job. He is a terrible pitcher, I saw him against the Cubs, he can't get anyone out. And his stats are atrocious.

I do like his last name though, it's kind of mysterious.

What about Dave Bush or Seth McClung? Jeff Suppan?

I don't think Fogg would clear waivers because of his low salary and he could be a decent long-reliver for a contender. The Rockies could claim him, though. They have a worse record than all teams in their league except the Pirates, Padres, Nationals, and Giants. None of those teams would need him because they're out of contention and would be better off giving the job to young pitchers. That leaves the Rox.
I do not think Snell would clear waivers. He signed a team friendly deal and if the Pirates wanted Franklin Morales for him they aren't looking to dump salary.

I think the Tigers will get so desparate for a starter that they end up claiming Paul Byrd and taking on all of his salary. Even if they are smart enough to not claim Byrd, I still think he'll end up with them. I also think the Yankees will sign Freddy Garcia. He's as good as Jarrod Washburn when he's healthy and they were willing to take on his whole contract and trade a midlevel prospect. So my predictions are that Fogg will be a Rockie, Garcia will be a Yank, and Byrd will be a Tiger.

Considering the report Wang may be out until October, I'll agree with the Garcia assessment. But I think the Rockies will claim Byrd, I believe according to the waiver wire they get the first crack... if they're within 5 games they'll make a move, 9 or more out and they'll save their money.

Umm, the Rockies record (50-61) was 2 games WORSE than the Pirates (51-58) at the beginning of today. In fact, the Pirates record wasn't even the next worse after the Rockies - The Reds (51-59) and Braves (50-59) were worse as well.

Trading Ian Snell for a group of 2nd tier prospects may be a fantasy for Rox hopefuls, but the Pirates' new management team want quality and quantity for any trade. The Pirates were/are not trading "rent a players"... Snell has legitimate all-star potential in the right environment. If Josh Fogg is the best option for the Rockies to attain play-off status, they will get what they deserve. Yanks get Nady/Marte; LAD get Ramirez; BoSox get Bay; ChiSox get Griffey; Rox get Fogg.... Four of those five teams traded quality prospects for quality players. All but one of those teams made themselves better; the Rox did not. It perplexes me that a team with a real chance to attain play-off status would forgo this chance for minimal cost, but I am from Pittsburgh...

Just a head's up for you guys on waiver claims. If a player is waived from an AL team like Byrd, he passes through the AL teams first in reverse order of standings, then he goes through the NL teams the same way.

Start Wearing Purple,
Like Melmann said, Byrd would only be get to the Rockies if NO team in the Al claimed him. It is possible because of his high salary, however.
Johnmith,
Even when you retyped it, I said that the Rockies have a worse record than all teams in their league except those teams. Then you say that the Pirates are better than the Rockies. By saying the Pirates are better than the Rockies and by saying the Rockies are worse than the Pirates, it means the same thing.

Paul Byrd another great start tonight . He should pass through no problem.

I don't know why I'm bothering but let's try this one more time:
You did NOT say the Rockies had a worse record than the Pirates - you said the Rockies had a worse record than all but 4 teams which included the Pirates. To be exact (and I never retyped anything - I am once again cutting and pasting your original post), you said "They have a worse record than all teams in their league except the Pirates, Padres, Nationals, and Giants." In other words, you said the Rockies had a BETTER record than the Pirates, PAdres, Nataionals and Giants. That statement was WRONG.

Ian Snell is not a #5 starter. Though If Jeff Francis was healthy that would be a good big.
