By Tim Dierkes [August 4, 2008 at 5:33pm CST]
5:33pm: I noticed that Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe rattled off a slew of possibilities to clear waivers this month, including Kevin Millar, Rafael Betancourt, Bobby Crosby, Mark Ellis, Alan Embree, and Raul Ibanez.
9:19am: Today let's take a swing through the American League and identify players who could clear waivers this month. If a player clears waivers he can be traded to any team for another such player or a prospect not on the 40-man roster.
- Rays: Trever Miller, Jonny Gomes. Gomes is already earning $1.275MM this year; he might be a non-tender candidate after the season. Miller is earning $2MM. Both are having poor seasons.
- Red Sox: Jason Varitek, Julio Lugo, Mike Timlin, Alex Cora. These players should pass through waivers unclaimed, but no one will want to trade for them. Lugo has $20.8MM remaining on his contract.
- Yankees: Jason Giambi, Derek Jeter, Bobby Abreu, Johnny Damon, Ivan Rodriguez, Carl Pavano. Many of the Yanks' high-priced stars could clear waivers, but trading them wouldn't make sense. Pavano could be moved in the right situation.
- Blue Jays: Scott Rolen, Vernon Wells, Lyle Overbay, Gregg Zaun. The Jays don't seem likely to attempt to unload any of these contracts, except maybe Zaun. Jon Heyman believes A.J. Burnett could also slip through waivers.
- Orioles: Aubrey Huff, Melvin Mora, Ramon Hernandez, Jay Payton, Jamie Walker. It's not hard to envision most of these guys clearing waivers, and maybe a few salary dump deals can be worked out. Huff's .912 OPS ranks 10th in the AL, and he has about $10.5MM left on his contract through '09. I could see a team claiming him.
- Twins: Michael Cuddyer, Mike Lamb, Adam Everett. These players should all clear waivers. Lamb and Everett could become DFA candidates.
- White Sox: Jim Thome, Ken Griffey Jr., Paul Konerko, Jose Contreras, A.J. Pierzynski, Juan Uribe, Mike MacDougal. The Sox have plenty of high-priced vets who could make it through waivers. Konerko would be tough to move given his poor performance and 10-and-5 rights.
- Tigers: Gary Sheffield, Edgar Renteria, Kenny Rogers, Todd Jones, Dontrelle Willis, Nate Robertson. The Tigers are seven games out in the AL Central; a few weeks from now they might look to get some money off the books.
- Royals: Jose Guillen, Jimmy Gobble, Ross Gload. Gobble and Gload don't seem likely to help a contender, while the Royals apparently want to keep Guillen. Jon Heyman believes Mark Grudzielanek would clear.
- Indians: Paul Byrd, David Dellucci, Jamey Carroll. Byrd has almost $2.5MM left on his deal, but we could still see a team put in a claim. Jon Heyman thinks Byrd will clear waivers.
- Angels: Garret Anderson, Gary Matthews Jr., Justin Speier. The Halos have some questionable contracts, but trades are not expected.
- Rangers: Kevin Millwood, Vicente Padilla, Michael Young, Frank Catalanotto, Marlon Byrd. It wouldn't be surprising to see Catalanotto and/or Byrd moved this month. Padilla is owed more than $17MM through '09. If a team claims that contract maybe the Rangers should let him go.
- Athletics: Eric Chavez, Emil Brown. An August deal seems unlikely for the A's.
- Mariners: Carlos Silva, Jarrod Washburn, Miguel Batista, Jose Vidro, Kenji Johjima, Miguel Cairo. All kinds of bad money here. Washburn has another $13.45MM coming through '09, but he might be claimed. Jon Heyman believes Adrian Beltre would also clear waivers.
Varitek and I believe Timlin cannot be traded anyways without their approval. They have 10-5 rights. The Sox would never trade Varitek anyways.

It's a joke even putting Jeter on this list, in no way is he a waiver trade candidate. There are a few other ridiculous names on there as well but he is the most outrageous.
Posted by: Bjammin | August 04, 2008 at 09:44 AM
Note that the post's intro clearly identifies this as a list of players who would CLEAR waivers. Varitek, Timlin, Jeter all apply. I was pretty clear (if you actually read the post) that the Yankees wouldn't trade a Jeter.

How does a NTC affect a waiver claim? For example, lets say Mora gets claimed and Os decide to just dump his contract, does Mora have to sign off on that first or does he have no say?
Posted by: wayne gomes | August 04, 2008 at 10:06 AM
Huff clearing wavers isn't any more likely than it was the first time it was suggested.
Posted by: wickedwitch | August 04, 2008 at 10:09 AM
I think the NTC still applies.

Tim, what's the incentive to keep checking this site now that the trade deadline has passed? Not trying to be a jerk or anything, I'm just wondering what to expect the rest of the year? (Please don't tell me it's all waiver wire talk)
Posted by: Airlinerguy | August 04, 2008 at 10:17 AM
Why would teams that just traded to acquire players (Pudge, NYY; Griffey Jr., CHW; etc.) turn around and put them on waivers just days or weeks later? Griff I guess makes a little sense as there's a log jam in their OF, but Pudge ain't leaving. I'm not asking to be a dick, I'm actually not really sure about the answer. And if you have a few examples of when it's happened in the past that would be appreciated.

Tim,
Why do you think the Rangers should let Padilla go if claimed?
1. The Rangers aren't in need to free up money
2. They could've traded Padilla for something if they wanted to get rid of him.
3. Padilla's contract isn't an albatross and is actually a good deal.
4. The most important - He has been the Rangers BEST starter this season.
Posted by: coolbean04 | August 04, 2008 at 10:33 AM
Two guys who could get claimed and traded in August: Alan Embree and Bobby Crosby. Both just valuable enough that a team might claim them, but bad/expensive enough that the A's won't want them. As for possible suitors: LAD and Philly?

@cjhel:

This explained it for me.
Posted by: tdischino | August 04, 2008 at 10:42 AM
I don't consider Padilla's contract a good deal. I think the Rangers might though.
I was just trying to create a comprehensive list of players who could clear waivers based on their contracts (excluding injured players for the most part). There wouldn't be much point for the Yanks to even put Pudge on them.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | August 04, 2008 at 10:42 AM
almost every player is placed on waivers. Gm's do this to mask who they are realy trying to trade...
Posted by: Kramerica Industries | August 04, 2008 at 10:52 AM
Would anyone actually want Wells? I find it hard to believe with his contract and how he's producing anyone would touch him. Also Rolens shoulder is hurt, so I doubt anyone would consider him as well.
Posted by: Dev0 | August 04, 2008 at 11:05 AM
Tim, what are the chances of the julio lugo being claimed. Jed Lowire is doing a great job at short stop so if not claimed, what do you think will happen?
Posted by: Pedroia15 | August 04, 2008 at 11:08 AM
Most GMs view the waiver wire deals as a chance to prune the salary budget before the winter hot stove gets started, little more.
Here is an idea for an ambitious post from Tim or some other contributor, would require alot of work but would be really interesting. Top X waiver wire trades of recent years, in terms of the prospects the dealing team got in exchange.
For example, Jose Ceda was the player the Cubs received in a waiver wire trade for Todd "Disgusted Bat Flip" Walker--Ceda is now the Cubs' top relief pitcher prospect. Surely there are other even more interesting examples.
Posted by: Johnny Rotten | August 04, 2008 at 11:22 AM
There is no way the Rangers would simply let Padilla go. As the comment above stated he has been the best pitcher for the Rangers this year. If you want to talk bad contracts talk about Silva and Zito, not Padilla's.

tdischino,
thanks for the redirect to the post, that is very helpful and i've seen it in the past, but actually, my lack of understanding isn't with how waiver trades work, but rather the mentality behind trading to acquire a player and then turning around and putting that player on waivers (especially guys of the caliber of a Pudge or Griff Jr.), as this post suggests could happen with Ivan Rodriguez and Ken Griffey Jr. I thought that several recent examples could help out.
Posted by: cjhel | August 04, 2008 at 11:54 AM
I think some of you are misundertanding the point of the list.
This is a list of players that might clear waivers which would enable teams to later trade them this month.
the Rangers for example wouldn't let Padilla go for nothing, but if they got a player back in return they might be willing to work out a deal.
Also teams that are currently in the playoff chase that didn't sell off players at the July deadline might fall out of the chase. And then trade a player at the end of the month that cleared waivers at the beginning of the month. Griff could be an example of this, but I doubt he would clear waivers (Cinci ate half of his contract) or okay a trade.
Posted by: kab21 | August 04, 2008 at 12:25 PM
vignette: Agreed on Embree and Crosby. They make enough to be unwanted, but could be useful for a contending team. I could easily see Crosby going to the Dodgers.
I would be shocked to see a waiver deal be made for Eric Chavez, but it can happen.

Tim - Will you be doing this for NL teams too? Or did I miss it?
Posted by: cmac1973 | August 04, 2008 at 03:34 PM
derek jeter will never be traded
Posted by: BaseballFanatic40 | August 04, 2008 at 04:52 PM
It is partially my fault since I titled it waiver trade candidates but listed all those who could clear. But yeah, I keep getting weird emails about Jeter. I know he's not getting traded.
NL comes tomorrow...
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | August 04, 2008 at 05:46 PM
Just putting my energy into the universe: please let Huff clear waivers.
Let's see if that Secret crap works.
Posted by: milehigh78 | August 04, 2008 at 06:11 PM
As soon as I saw Jeter on this list I knew it was a joke.
Posted by: randyrdsox | August 04, 2008 at 06:35 PM
i know Chavez wouldnt get moved but now he is sittin out the rest of season
Posted by: Larsen101 | August 04, 2008 at 06:46 PM
Would (ok, should) not clear waivers:
Mark Ellis
AJ Burnett
Rafael Betancourt
Scott Rolen (still a defensive beast)
Nate Robertson
Posted by: Sky | August 04, 2008 at 07:29 PM
Wow, this post serves as a pretty good test of who can read and who can't.
Posted by: Sky | August 04, 2008 at 07:31 PM
i would keep rogers and willis but get rid of the other guys on the tigers list. could robertson get moved in the offseason? a lefty should have some value.
Posted by: Calriver | August 04, 2008 at 07:36 PM
Does anyone think Toronto's Scott Downs would clear waivers? He's owed about $7 million through the end of 2010. I'd love to see his left arm in the Phillies' pen.
Posted by: Balthazar | August 04, 2008 at 07:44 PM
Not surprising that the inclusion of Jeter got a rise out of the Yankee fans. Just imagine what would have happened if more than a handful of them knew how to read.
Posted by: CubsAddictMG | August 04, 2008 at 08:01 PM
embree and crosby to the redsox for lars anderson or lowrie. any chance. embree might have value in that he is a free agnet and will net picks. crosby gives the sox more pop and would be an upgrade from lugo and lowrie. I also wonder if beane would work some magic and get some top prospects in this deal by taking on lugo's contract.

"Does anyone think Toronto's Scott Downs would clear waivers? He's owed about $7 million through the end of 2010. I'd love to see his left arm in the Phillies' pen."
keep dreaming, there is 0 chance one of the top 3 middle relievers in the game passes through waivers.
Posted by: Dev0 | August 04, 2008 at 09:20 PM
In response to thegoods24:
Why in the world would the Sox trade their #2 & 4 prospects for a MARGINAL upgrade at SS and a guy they cut a few years ago. Embree is probably not an upgrade over Lopez, as much as that makes me want to puke. That deal is even more ridiculous than Scott Downs getting through waivers unclaimed.
Posted by: CTScott | August 04, 2008 at 09:23 PM
I think Huff would be a smart pickup. The Os aren't small market and would be willing to eat contract. They're interested in the prospects coming back. So a team like the Mets would be out, but, a team like the Brewers, or Diamond Backs, etc would work.
Also I can see the BoSox picking up Millar to load up their bench. He wouldn't be too expensive in money or prospects. Again, the Os are interested in players, not money here.
Posted by: basemonkey | August 05, 2008 at 12:19 AM
Remember people-- you don't have to actually "clear" waivers to get dealt. A lot of these guys have value and would be claimed. The dumping team has the option to pull the player back, off waivers.
That's where deals can get done--a team claims a player, the original team calls them up and says we're pulling them back, but you can have them in exchange for X or Y or Z prospect...
Posted by: max power | August 05, 2008 at 08:59 AM
Good point, Max, but if multiple teams claim a player, he can only be traded to the worst team (and there's a clause about going to the other league or staying in the same league, I forget which).
Posted by: Sky | August 05, 2008 at 10:44 AM
The pecking order favors the player's native league. So I believe for an AL player, that the w-l records, worst to best, get first dibs. Then the same process starts for the National league. So for that AL player, say, the Angels would get higher priority than the worst NL team.
Posted by: basemonkey | August 05, 2008 at 11:47 AM
Giants need to trade Winn for Gomes. Then Claim Beltre off waivers. When the Mariners pull him back, trade Correia, and Jose Castillo for him. When the Dodgers are going to trade for Maddux the Giants claim him. Just so the bums don't get him. Then trade Omar Vizquel to the Red Sox. Rich Aurilia to the Mets. This is exactly what I want to see.
Posted by: Joe505 | August 05, 2008 at 12:41 PM
I'd love the Rays to trade Gomes for Winn. But the giants have no use for him -- he's awful in the field and isn't even a league-average hitter any more.
If the Mariners put Beltre on waivers, there should be a ton of teams that claim him. $12MM is actually a good deal for him these days.
