« Offseason Outlook: Pittsburgh Pirates | Main | Joel Guzman Clears Waivers »
ESPN's Jayson Stark has the details on Carlos Delgado's 2009 option.
Delgado needs to amass 30 "awards points" over 2005-08 for the option to change from $12MM to $16MM. He has five points in the bank from '05. To get the other 25, Delgado will need to finish in the top six in MVP voting and win World Series MVP. If Delgado reaches the 30 points, the $16MM is not an option - it vests. Under those circumstances, the Mets probably would not mind.
Still, most likely the Mets will be faced with a $12MM option or a $4MM buyout, an easy call to exercise.

There's also another scenario where Delgado can do it via being the NLCS MVP AND the WS MVP.
And if the option 'turns' to 16 million, it vests. Of course, it's not a particularly likely scenario.

You're right...Stark is updating his article accordingly.

I was among the Delgado bashers early, no point in denying it, but I am so happy for Carlos. He seems like a good dude, and this is just insane. I am 20 years old and have been watching baseball for like 15 years. Following the league seriously for probably 7 or 8 years, and in all that time, I have never seen a guy catch fire like Delgado has. Every home run he hits seems to be 450 feet. The is definitely the most improbable, incredible, scorching hot streak I have ever seen from a baseball player.

If not MVP, what about comeback player of the year? Is that award for guys who are injured? Or does a horrendous year followed by a ridiculous one qualify?
