« Mariners Rumors: Ibanez, Beltre, Ichiro | Main | Will Mike Mussina Retire? »
In case there was any doubt Orlando Cabrera will not re-sign with the White Sox this winter, he made all kinds of critical comments about his teammates on the radio recently. The Sun-Times' Joe Cowley is opinionated in the piece, basically saying Cabrera has no right to question his teammates' attitude.
Cabrera, 34 in November, once again hits free agency at an excellent time. The market for shortstops is thin. Cabrera's hitting .283/.336/.369 in 702 plate appearances. Defensively, the Fielding Bible's plus/minus system says he's made two more plays than the average shortstop this year. That's about middle of the pack. Cabrera is earning $9MM this year.

i do see where cabrera is coming from, but it seems like weird timing and everything. he was definitely the wrong guy to say this. this needs to be said though, what is a team without chemistry? i dunno, call me crazy

No wonder Edgar Renteria hates this guy. He sounds like a fool and someone like thats good for no team. Unless he's Manny !

I think there's a translation issue here. Cabrera wants--I think--to say that the team doesn't take the field confident that they'll win, but rather merely hoping--and this, despite their excellent players. But his English is iffy. I don't read it nearly so negative as some do.

Did I miss something? What was so awful about his comments?

I was listening to the boers and burnsy show live, and it really made sense, from what i was watching. they're not serious at all, and at the same time, are always uptight. if u wanna have fun, thats great, but when it comes to gametime, they need to start taking things seriosly and stop trying to be the thugs of the league.
c'mon now boys, GO SOX!

"No wonder Edgar Renteria hates this guy."
Renteria and Cabrera's issues are over money. Namely, Renteria wanted Cabrera to invest significant sums in Renteria's business without giving Cabrera much of a say in how things went.
By all accounts, Cabrera was great in the clubhouse with the Angels, who are known for their chemistry.

maybe he'll go to the jays? just throwing it out there. i'm pretty sure they are in need of a SS and he's a proven player with a pretty good track record. (this is speculation, just thought i heard they were looking for a "long-term" SS).
Posted by: tmoney352 | September 25, 2008 at 06:41 PM
Cabrera is going to be able to cherry pick this year, especially if the Dodgers extend Furcal. The next best SS on the market is Eckstein given Nomar's health history.

Don't the Jays already have 3 SS's? I know that Eck probably won't be back but that still leaves them with 2.

"Don't the Jays already have 3 SS's? I know that Eck probably won't be back but that still leaves them with 2."
Um, Eck was traded. Did you miss that?
Anyway, McDonald and Scutaro are both crap hitters, so it creates a major hole.

I don't see anything wrong with the comments he made. He is right about what he said. Watching the Sox play this year, now that I think about it, they really do take the field hoping that they don't lose, instead of expecting to win. Who ever tried to make OC sound like a bad guy here did a terrible job. Reporters or whoever just tried to blow the story up and make him sound like a bad guy. Why don't they talk about A.J. Pierziadnkfalsjdklfjskey? This guy talks more smack then anyone in the league, steps on peoples ankles and backs on purpose and thinks he is the best catcher in the big leagues. He has no respect for himself, his opponents or the game itself.

Ricciardi has already made it clear that the Jays will not sign a shortstop this season. With Hill healthy again, they will have Scutaro, McDonald and Inglett to man shortstop and the backup infield spots.

Orlando Cabrera 283/336/369
Marco Scutaro 262/338/352
HUGE difference right there eh?
No thanks to Orlando Cabrera and how over priced he will be.

There is a huge difference in their offenisve histories, especially power and speed

Grant, JP has made a lot of things clear, and does the total opposite. Five days before Sept callups, he said Snider would not be coming up.
I don't care for Cabrera.
Once I read how he phones up to the scorer's box to remove errors, I have no interest in him.

JP ricciardi obfuscate? lie?
Posted by: crash | September 26, 2008 at 03:49 AM
I see entirely where Cabrera is coming from. The White Sox have been playing some lazy baseball as of late. Some sloppy fielding, lack of hustle on the basepaths. I'm not going to say Cabrera is not at fault as well and that he's not a complete clubhouse distraction, but someone needs to light a fire under that ballclub. they should be dominating the twins.

"Once I read how he phones up to the scorer's box to remove errors, I have no interest in him."
All players and teams do that.

Being a Tigers fan, I side with Cabrera on this one because I am so frustrated with Renteria. Cabrera has already cleaned up Renteria's mess in Boston, as his replacement, and he has a track record of playing for successful teams. A World Series with the Red Sox and then two division titles with the Angels, and now the White Sox are in position to make the postseason, sounds like he knows about winning. If payroll allows it I would love to have him in Detroit next year but that probably won't happen.
