There is no way the Cards shell out that kind of money for a closer, there's nothing they hove done in the last couple of years to suggest it I think if they do open the check books it will be for a SS(Furcal), a 2nd baseman(O Dog) and a #2/3 type starter(Lowe). They also need some bullpen help of the left-handed specialist variety. They have 2 young guys(Perez, Motte)who throw in the upper 90's that have closed in the minors and a couple guys that have closed some in the majors(including Perez to and extent), I could see an older closer picked to provide insurance and help set up(Howry, Foulke, etc.) Besides with Wagner done for next years the Mets are now easily the favorite.

Wow it sure looks like the Nady/Marte trade worked out for Pittsburgh after all Karstens has been ok and Ohlendorf looked good in his debut. Not to mention the fact that Tabata tore it up in Altoona. Good job Neil.

I liked the trade from the Bucs perspective when it was made. Didn't think it would only take a few weeks to vindicate the move though. This will only look better and better with more time as the Bucs players develop.

I'm shocked that Swindle was DFA'd again. What does the guy have to do? He has ridiculously good control and puts up dominant numbers year after year. I hope the Jays pick him up. They got most of their league best bullpen the same way. (Downs, Carlson, Camp...)

I go to Vanderbilt, and today on campus I saw Pedro Alvarez. He was wearing a Pirates hat, so I think that must be a good sign for the Pirates.

The Orioles shouldn't even think about signing any type a or type b free agents. It would be counter productive

No it wouldn't be counterproductive to sign Bird-type pitchers. Teams do not lose picks for signing Type-B free agents. The only type-A the O's would look at is Tex, and I doubt they'd get him anyway.

dorfmac- Depends. The O's wouldn't lose a draft pick for a Type A anyways.

If the signee isn't blocking a prospect and won't block a top prospect in the near future (i.e. the O's signing Pudge and the A's signing CC are bad ideas), I don't see the problem with it. Just don't sign multiple FAs. The only decent SP the O's have is Guthrie, and locking him up could pose a major challenge.

The O's need to pick up Swindle. He walks fewer people than most of that O's pen.

lets not make the Nady trade out to be more than it was. Ohlendorf has SOME potential but he's already 26 years old. Karstens is 25 and he's peaked. They're both probably 4.50 ERA pitchers who can only survive in the weaker NL. Tabata is a decent prospect but his attitude and commitment are concerns.

Nady hasn't missed a beat and while Marte has struggled, he's still one of the best lefty relievers in baseball. Both players will be around with the Yankees much longer than Kasrstens and Ohlendorf are with the Pirates (and if this is not the case, the Pirates will continue to lose perennially.)

I'll take that bet cleanuphtr.

The Pirates will be happy to have a couple LA pitchers playing at the minimum. Tabata is more than just a decent prospect. He was a top prospect last year and had a rough first half.

The fact is that Nady is basically a LA outfielder. His career OPS+ is just 109. That includes his monster year in 2008.

Looking at his 162 game average he would put up a line of: 281/337/461. So, while no one can argue that Nady isn't having a great year, it's also reasonable to assume that Nady will drift back down to his mean. A sub 800 OPS corner outfielder is hardly anything to get excited about.
