Odds and Ends : Snyder, Ludwick, Bradley

Reading material for Tuesday...

  • Chris Carpenter is reportedly dealing with a unique and career-threatening nerve injury, which could increase the Cardinals' need for starting pitching this winter.
  • Viva El Birdos says the Cardinals should offer Ryan Ludwick and others for Matt Cain.  Can't hurt to ask.
  • The Cubs claimed outfielder Brad Snyder off waivers from the Indians.  He was the 18th overall pick in 2003, but hasn't produced enough in the minors.
  • Milton Bradley stands to earn another half-million bucks if he can snag seven more plate appearances.  Bradley met with the Rangers a few months ago to discuss a long-term deal, but nothing is close.  Bradley feels the Rangers are dragging their feet, and gives 50-50 odds on a return.  He said he'd quit baseball if he couldn't find a multiyear deal somewhere.
  • Sam Mellinger reminds Royals fans that their long-term success hinges on the development of in-house youngsters rather than free agent signings.
  • Steven Goldman notes that the Red Sox are far better prepared for the future than the Yankees.

Sad to see Snyder go, really wanted to see the Ohio native make it....but just not cutting it. Can't see him fitting into the Cubs plans either.

Snyder is just one more example of a "5 tool" player that gets the scouts all excited and then never lives up to the hype. That's not to say that he doesn't still have potential but the Tribe needs that roster spot for others who have passed him by and could be at risk in the upcoming Rule 5 draft. Plus, I'm pretty sure that the Trbe front office thought there was a good chance that Brad would pass through waivers.

Even if Snyder passed through waivers, he's out of minor league options so would have had to be put on the 25 man roster next season or be lost to waivers.....

Hard to see him sticking with the Cubs OF...but maybe he does. Definately still has the potential...but strikeouts are a huge concern with him.

Steve Goldman is a smart man.

Do the "others" involve Colby Rasmus? Probably not.

Steven Goldman's statement is a given.

The reason they'd be willing to move Ludwick would probably be to give Rasmus a spot in the OF....no way they'd part with both.

hmm a 23 year old stud for a 29 year old (and up until this year) 4th outfielder...wow people smoke alot of crack

Ludwick, David Freese, for Matt Cain and Double A player....?Ben Snyder?

"hmm a 23 year old stud for a 29 year old (and up until this year) 4th outfielder...wow people smoke alot of crack"

Where did anyone say it would be Ludwick straight up? Says Ludwick and others.....

Even that wouldn't work, but the point was can't hurt to throw the idea out there.

I don't mean to be rude, but the Cardinals do not have the right pieces it would take to acquire Cain. They would have to cough up a bounty that most likely STARTED with Rasmus and Todd, and would include a few others.

And I don't see them willing to give up those pieces. Outside of those players, there isn't enough high ceiling talent that fits.

I agree with Hermie on Ludwick... he needs another season like this to make sure he's not a flash in the pan. Other than that, they don't have the young power hitter. Giants probably want a LaPorta type.

If he was ML ready as of next season I'd say the Red Sox should offer a package around Anderson... but they'll want a young power hitter to start in 09.

With the braves clearly looking for outfield help the royals should offer up Dejesus and cash for chuck james and Brandon jones. This gives the braves a solid outfielder while paying a very small price for pieces that really don't seem to fit in their equation. They also would have payroll flexibility to sign another outfielder. The royals would get a lefty starter who puts up crazy good numbers in AAA and seems to just need a change of address to become a very good #4. They also get a guy in Jones who can immediatley fill a starting spot in their outfield and may just end up putting up better numbers then dejesus down the line. After that they should move Ron Mahay. They could get two decent lower level prospects.

If Ludwick and some second teir prospects got the job done I'm sure there would be alot of GMs stratching their heads.

If that was the price then my offer of Bailey/Encarncion/2nd teir prospect might just be good enough.

It's going to be hard to make a Cain deal if the main piece you're offering is an OF (especially Ludwick). The Giants need a corner infielder or a stud SS. Brewers, Phillies, and Rangers - the deal will come out of one of those three clubs, if it comes at all.

joemorgan=#1, I hope putting Callaspo a SS and Aviles and 2nd is a typo. The only chance Callaspo becomes anything more than a utility guy is if they don't find a better option than Aviles at short. In my opinion, Aviles has been doing a pretty great job there. Not the greatest range, but a vast improvement over who has been out there the past decade.

I agree with Management. Why acquire a fifth starting-quality outfielder when the team doesn't have locks at first, short, or third? Fielder or Rollins made a lot more sense to me.

PJH
No it is not a typo. Aviles has no range. He is best suited for 2b. Callaspo may end up just being a utility player but he has more walks then strikeouts and is a better fielder in my opinion then Aviles. This lineup will not win the division. It is setup to allow for growth for the players and consistent positions for each player. The Royals constantly move players from postion to position they need to establish a core and build from there. If they are going to compete in the future and Aviles is for real 2b is where he should be.

I don't think it'd be a stretch to use Ludwick at first base. I wouldn't use the Giants' (possible) outfield surplus as the reason this couldn't happen.

Tim- I don't think it is the Giant's surplus that would shy them away, but more the idea that Ludwick doesn't have the aura surrounding him to be a centerpiece of a team. If you give up a guy like Cain, you expect one of two things:

1.) A haul in the resemblance of Bartolo Colon or Erik Bedard that yields at least one super prospect, and a few other pieces that have potential to make a meaningful impact down the road

or

2.) A deal "similar" to the Garza Delmon Young trade where both teams get Major League ready talent that is young and controllable. It is my estimation that Cain would be worth much more than a Delmon Young type, but I may be wrong.

joemorgan=#1, just out of curiosity, do you watch a lot of Royals games, or are you just going by what the media says about Aviles? Not trying to say you don't, but the media exaggerates his lack of range, and his offense has more than outweighed his range. 2nd isn't his natural position, and he has said that himself. I think he has more than proven himself as an everyday SS, just hope he keeps it up next season.

Jayson Stark wrote:

"We keep hearing people speculate about the Giants trading Matt Cain. But we can't find a team that has gotten anywhere in its attempts to even get the Giants to discuss him. "I don't know who got that rumor rolling," said an official of one club. "But they told us, emphatically, no."

You people need to get your heads out of the clouds.

If you lived in the bay area and listened to Brian Sabean, Bobby Evans and other Giants officials you'd know that the organization knows it is not going to compete in 2009. They still need find out what they have with players like Nate Schierholtz, Manny Burriss, Pablo Sandoval, Travis Ishikawa and a slew of bullpen guys. Next season will look much like 2008.

Cain for Ludwick+ is a total joke.

I'd do it for Pujols (if he's healthy). Anything less, is a pipe dream.

joemorgan=#1, Chuckie's gonna be out until midway through nest season and BJones is NOT a CF by any stretch of the imagination...

Without Pujols hitting in the same lineup and with the different park there's no doubt Ludwick would put up worse numbers next year. Not saying he's a one year wonder but I think the conditions he played under this year went a long way towards his good season. Put him in a weaker lineup and a better pitchers park and he doesn't succeed as much. Definitely not enough for Matt Cain.

nostocksjustbonds: Now your talking pipe dreams. Yes Cain for Ludwick plus some isn't going to happen, but lets not act like Cain is the best player in baseball...unlike Pujols who is. The truth is that Cain is being talked about in possible trades; once you bring up Pujols' name then you take it to a level of pure fantasy and zero percent chance of possibility.

Pjh-
I've probably watched 25 games with aviles playing ss. admit it's not a ton but I have seen some.

bravesfan-
I hadn't noticed he finally had the surgery! But I would say Jones in center can't be much worse then Dejesus. They are both more suited to left field but it could be worse.

The cardinals will ntrade Ludwick until next year probally. If they trade an outfielder, it might be Ankiel or Schumarker. Rasmas can play in the outfield and with the outfielders that is free agents, watch out, the Cardinals have money to spend because they do not have to pay Encarnacion anymore.

I have to say, I think Ludwick is actually more valuable than he is being given credit for. He plays a good outfield and has a plus arm, and how many of these "prospects" have ever put up a season in the majors of .294/.368/.576 in over 500 at bats? There is something to be said for a guy who has done that and has less than 2 years of service time.

That being said, I think it would take another very good young player or two, and the Cards don't really match up since they won't deal Ludwick and Rasmus both and the Giants don't need their other good prospect, Anderson.

I also have to agree with Knuffy. I think they try and trade Ankiel if anything because he is going to be getting large raises very soon.

Don't forget, if ownership would stop Scrooging it, they could make a real splash this winter. They have the money if they ever decide to use it on a marquee guy...and with trades, it could be a very interesting offseason.

Crazy news about Carpenter though, kind of sad to see one of the better pitchers in the game possibly done.

One major issue people forget when talking about Ludwick for Cain. Ludwick is 30. This does not make him a young power hitter. Any serious team could match a Cards offer.

"One major issue people forget when talking about Ludwick for Cain. Ludwick is 30. This does not make him a young power hitter. "

Age only matters as much as service time does. Sure, if you could have a guy that has done that at 25, even better. But they would have control over Ludwick for 4 to 5 years, being his 30 to 34 or 35 years. For a power hitter, those are good years to have a guy.

Service time is just as big or a bigger deal than actual age, as long as he can perform.

kdub-

Actually, one of the rumors in the SF region right now is that Neukom might want to make a splash in his first season. It wouldn't be too difficult for him to do so, as the Giants will lose some unneeded contracts this offseason, and are already $15-20 million under their payroll from the last three years.

Besides, I quit believing Sabean a long time ago, partly because he's more responsible to the management than people realize, and partly because he's always over-hyping the players and the team. The Giants may not know what they have in their rookies, but they know what they don't have: hitters capable of turning the team around.

Put it this way, 21 year old with impressive promise or 30 year old who has his first taste of success admittedly impressive.

Which do you choose? Age matters in baseball once you hit 30, less years before you go down hill.

Okay, I'm adding my name to the list of people pissed off with typekey... this is my 4th attempt to post.

mtzxc - obviously, Pujols is more valuable than Cain. I'm just saying he's the only player in the Cards system that could pry Cain away from the Giants, even if its Cain+ for Pujols.

I doubt that is true. I don't see the Cardinals even putting Pujols name out there even in preemptive offers. For any trade. But to say that Pujols is the only player...that isn't really true. The Cardinals minor league system is better than most people give it credit for; it just doesn't get the publicity and hype that teams such as the Yankees, Mets, Dodgers, and Angels get. Obviously people know about Anderson, Rasmus, Wallace, and Todd...but players such as Mortenson, Herron, Jay, Vazquez, Freese, Craig, Hamilton, Hoffpauir, and Kozma aren't too shabby themselves. The price may be too steep for the Cardinals taste, but a deal could get done...and without Pujols having to even be mentioned.

Giants need a SS, so anyone think they would be intersted in Jhonny Peralta and prospects for Cain?

no one is saying that Pujols is involved in any discussions, just like Cain isn't involved in any discussions. I can see why every team in the majors would want Cain, and it would take a boatload (think Bedard or Haren type deal) to get him, but the Cards don't have what it takes (at the positions the Giants would want) unless they wanted to offer Pujols, and I should add, Wallace (thanks for the reminder) though, he's not tradeable yet as a recent draftee.

As was mentioned, the Cards have some other nice prospects like Rasmus (OF), Anderson (C), and Todd (P), but they just don't fit the Giants' needs, and hence, it doesn't make sense to make them the centerpieces of an offer for Cain.

Regardless, the overall point here is that trading for Cain would cost too much for the Cards, and it would never happen, especially if Ludwick (the name actually floated) is the centerpiece or key player (or anything other than a throw-in.)

And if Cards fans think they can get Cain for Ludwick + a prospect or two, they're high.

"Giants need a SS, so anyone think they would be intersted in Jhonny Peralta and prospects for Cain?"

Maybe if that prospect is LaPorta...

To say a guy in his first full year in MLB, with 4 to 5 service years left, that just posted a whopping .944 OPS should only be considered to be a throw in...thats going overboard here.

I agree, the Cards don't match up very well, but its a .944 OPS in over 500 at bats! He isn't just a prospect, he has actually raked in the majors at a near MVP level. Give him more credit than that...
