Sheets' Elbow Likely To Affect Payday

Brewers starter Ben Sheets dealt with a triceps strain in April but managed to avoid the DL.  After that, he made all his starts and was set to reach 200 innings last night for the first time since 2004.  However, Sheets was removed from last night's start after two innings due to elbow pain.  He's quietly been pitching through the pain since late August.

A healthy Sheets seemed primed for a payday north of $70MM this winter.  He says the MRI showed no structural damage, but the injury seems likely to cost Sheets millions this winter.

The Brewers pledged not to negotiate with Sheets until after the season due to the health concerns.  Sheets was eyeing the open market back in June.

Stating the obvious, stating the obvious. Sheets gets hurt, diminished payday.

And he is also less likely to stay in MIL now.

Wouldn't this make him MORE likely to stay in Milwaukee? He'll cost less making him easier to re-sign.

so does this improve lowe's payday?
(his last ten starts or so and lack of injury history have to help)
because i have to say it looks likes the astros chances of landing sheets just improved.
the elbow should deter the yanks and there was that post a few days ago about c.c. preferring not to play for new york.... lowe in pinstripes? (it is east coast afterall) or do they cross their fingers for burnett? i just dont see that new yanks commitee being sold on kyle lohse.

This sounds like ole money bags or AKA grocery bags McClane will make a "jennings" repeat in Houston. I know it was Purpura mostly but gosh darnit, Houston is obsessed with pitchers prone to injury for cheap and then watching them get hurt....i'm astros fan btw....oh and its just my two cents so......

that is of course of the long shot happens that the Stros' have a chance to sign him...duh....sorry

Burnett is definately licking his chops now. Yanks may throw $17-18M at him....

I think that, if anything, the injury increases the Brewers' chances of re-signing Sheets, as he becomes more affordable

Expensive is all relative. Sheets at $13 million a year is too much. Someone may overpay for Sheets but it will not be us (brewers). He doesn't usually even get 13 wins per year, and that's in years that he doesn't miss 6 months with a hangnail or a blister. The only way the brewers keep him is if its under $10 million per year

I think sheets and burnett will get roughly the same money. For my money i want burnett out there, hands down the better pitcher. All sheets has is a nasty curveball that is only effective some of the time. You need an ace that you can count on to go out there and stop a slide if need be. Last night the brewers needed him to show up and he could only muster 2 IP. Shockingly the BP looked sharp, short of Torres.

"For my money i want burnett out there, hands down the better pitcher."

What? Burnett has the same, if not worse, injury history as Sheets, and his pitching stats almost universally are not as good.

Ya some team will overpay for Sheets this winter, and I have a feeling he is gonna be on the DL a lot for this team

With Sheets potentially getting less money now, I wonder... If Burnett does opt-out, would Toronto try to sign Sheets to replace him? I mean, it's not like the Jay's rotation, outside of Halladay, is THAT great. I know they are leading the AL in staff ERA, but with McGowan and Marcum's inconsistency, Jay management should have an open mind. Not to mention they have one of the best pitching coaches in the league.

Sheets would still be near the east coast, and he has already shutout the Yanks once in his career. His stats against AL teams aren't that good though: 4.60 ERA and .257 BAA in his career.

Still, he does have ace material. And with the Big Hurt's contract coming off the books, as well as Burnett's, and with them vying to be competitive in the AL East, there has to be a probability of this happening.

How much, exactly, do you think this is gonna cost Sheets?

Another very happy person: Oliver Perez

cant wait to see ben sheets sorry ass in another uniform

make that a different uniform

I'm not sure how you can say Burnett is "hands down the better pitcher." You might be able to argue his stuff is better...but they pitch completely differently. Sheets curve is the hardest I think I've ever seen. I don't know anyone else that throws one that hard that breaks that quick. Burnett has some pretty nasty stuff too...but I this pitching wise, Sheets is probably a bit better.
