« Royals To Look Outside for 2009 Help | Main | Cardinals To Be Aggressive This Offseason »
Last week, John Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press contemplated the Tigers' offseason plans. Their payroll projects at $130MM assuming no free agent signings or extensions; however, according to Morosi the Tigers' revenue can only sustain $110MM. Owner Mike Ilitch wants a World Series but spending more doesn't seem likely without shaking things up.
Morosi thinks the Tigers might have to trade Magglio Ordonez:
"They need a shortstop who covers more ground than Edgar Renteria. They need a closer, unless they are comfortable with Fernando Rodney (36 innings, 25 walks) protecting leads in the ninth inning. They need one more setup man, because of the uncertainty surrounding Joel Zumaya's health. They also need to improve their rotation."
Have fun with that one. Magglio is set to make $18MM in '09, followed by team options of $18MM and $15MM in '10 and '11, so any realistic trades need to be with teams that can shoulder that contract.
Despite a disappointing campaign, offense is still the one area of depth for the Tigers so this move would make sense.

If Ordonez is really available I'd expect a big push from the Braves. The Braves need a big Bat in the outfield and have a surplus in the pen when Moylan and Soriano return in the spring. They also have two MLB ready SS in Escobar and Lillibridge. Add to that a bumper crop of projectable arms in AA+ and you've got the makings of a trade. However, I'd bet the braves would want Soriano and his millions sent over Moylan and Gonzo and Lillibridge over Escobar.

The Braves do not have a surplus in the pen. They have a crop of unprovens. Moylan, Soriano, and Gonzalez all need to be kept. I would also view Escobar as off limits, he is their starting SS unless the deal was Maggs for Escobar straight up (Prado would take over at SS). Maybe the Tigers would want Gorkys back?
I think Renteria is as good as gone. I could see the Tigers trading for someone who is an improvement over Ramon Santiago, cheap, but not necessarily a good SS.

Do we really think the Braves would trade for this? I mean they are in 4th place in the NL East. Look for the Marlins to be better next year with that pitching staff (Nolasco, Sanchez, Volstad, Miller, whoever you want here) Thats expecting them to deal Olsen for a catcher. The Braves need to rebuild their whole team pretty much. Trade Chipper and start rebuilding. The glory years for the Braves are over

expect both florida teams to push for maggs. Maggs would be an upgrade over Cliff Floyd in TB.
and YES the tigers would love to get Gorkys hernandez back...id actually love to reverse the renteria trade.
hopefully something works out in our favor.

I hope that if we trade him, we get back as much as humanly possible. He is the league's batting champion (maybe 2 years in a row).
I know this sounds crazy, but Ordonez for Rollins + ?
And Quantum, you're not the only one that wants to reverse the Renteria trade.

What about Mag's to Cincinnati for Francisco Cordero, Alex Gonzalez, and one of Homer Bailey, Matt Maloney, or Daryl Thompson.
This gives the Reds the power bat they need, and they have Keppinger and Burton to fill in the holes.
It gives the Tigers a closer, defensive SS, and a young fringe starter.
Plus, the salaries actually work out to about even.

I'm not sure that we want a closer than is getting older, an injured "defensive" SS and Homer Bailey.
Bailey isn't too good right now, Gonzalez is about as good as Santiago and I'm not big on Cordero.

Ordonez to the Phillies and the Phillies let Burrell walk. This improves their defense and gives them a solid bat. Moving from Detroit to Philly would do some nice things for Ordonez's power numbers. Maybe make the Tigers swallow $3 million or so, but 3 years, $51 million isn't the end of the world for a player of Ordonez's caliber. I would take it over giving Burrell 4 years and $60 million, given Burrell's defense.

Well as for the shortstop, they could always go the cheap route and try to get McDonald from the Jays, lousy hitting but good defense. And closer, cross your fingers and hope Zumaya can handle it.
As for Ordonez, well I can see a Holliday trade helping and hurting a potential Ordonez deal. First of all, it takes a suitor off the table... but it might make a runner up desperate.

You'd have to think the back end of Ordonez's contract would greatly influence the return the Tigers get.
The Braves would probably get rid of Soriano and Lillibridge, but one is coming off a year of arm trouble and the other has shown he isn't ready for the big leagues so their trade value is questionable. I think a prospect like Ka'aihue and maybe Medlen would have to be included.

If the Dodgers can't re-sign Ramirez I could see them making a move for Ordonez. They have Jones and Pierre already but they aren't what they need in the OF.
Dodgers could pick up Penny's option and trade him for Ordonez. Through in a reliever and/or high prospect and it could work perhaps....

Yeah, the Dodgers can trade for Ordonez, but it will probably cost Kemp/Ethier and Broxton.

I think the Braves will make a push for Maggs as well. Just no sure what the fit might be. Perhaps a third team would have to be involved.
Or the Tigers might want to expand the deal to include Robertson and his unwieldy contract.
This would require the Braves to add a couple of prospects. The Tigers would probably ask about Hanson, but would some deal involving Morton or Medlen or Parr get their interest?

Those team options for '10 and '11 will vest if Ordonez has 270 starts or 1080 plate appearances in 2008-09. He has 128 starts and 555 PA so far in '08, so he's well on his way. That changes the calculation considerably for suitors, and will probably lower the return for Magglio considerably.
The Phils would almost certainly be willing to take that contract, and might be able to send some good young players at positions where the Tigers need help (Lou Marson and Jason Donald come to mind). If Detroit wants equal talent-for-talent in the deal, though, Magglio isn't going anywhere.
Posted by: ColonelTom | September 14, 2008 at 09:57 PM
I'd be happy to see Magglio stay put. I do understand that the Tigers should deal at peak value though. If he is dealt to Philly the Tigers better demand Lidge at least.
Posted by: Calriver | September 15, 2008 at 02:40 AM
Lidge isn't moving... the Phillies won't sacrifice what was a problem to solve a different one. Carasco would be the main chip.
Posted by: start_wearing_purple | September 15, 2008 at 03:13 AM
Tigers won't be able to get Ethier/Kemp and Broxton for Mags. Maybe Elbert and a position player (one of their young IFers perhaps)....but that's it. Mags is gettign up there in age and teams know the reason the Tigers are looking at trading him is to dump some salary to be able to fix the pitching problem.
Posted by: Hermie13 | September 15, 2008 at 08:23 AM
The Tigers won't get equal talent for talent. The more salary the Tigers eat, the more talent they will get.
Calriver- Why Lidge? The Tigers' targets should be Carlos Carrasco, Lou Marson, or Jason Donald. Young, team controlled for a long time, and fill positions where Tigers are weak.

Yeah, no.

That would be a really good way to get the Dodgers to hang up the phone.
Resigning Manny is ideal, but I like the idea of trading Penny+ for Maggs if Manny doesn't work out. I also think that the use Torre is getting out of Elbert may indeed be a showcase for the off season trading block. He has been used a lot instead of Beimel and they have been hiding McDonald in the back of the 'pen.

Why lidge? Because the Tigers need a lights out reliever worse than you need o2. Rodney to close? are you kidding me? Might as well pack in next year too. RP is a disease. And lidge is not old. I don't want an unproven kid that may not work out.
And Penny for maggs is stupid. They both get injured but it's worse when you can't pitch every 5th day. Besides, Detroit's staff has enough overpaid losers as it is.
