Heyman's Latest: Sabathia, Hardy, Manny

Let's take a look at Jon Heyman's column from yesterday.

  • The Yankees will go "all in" for C.C. Sabathia.  Heyman sees the Dodgers, Mets, and Giants as other possible suitors.
  • Heyman dismisses a rumor of J.J. Hardy, Prince Fielder, and another player for Matt Cain.
  • He predicts a "feeding frenzy" for Hardy.  I'm with Heyman though, I wouldn't be quick to trade him this winter.
  • Heyman talked to a GM who feels the Mets will go after Boras client Manny Ramirez.  If the five-year demand is accurate, the list of suitors will probably shrink significantly.
  • Manny quote: "I gotta thank Scott for bringing me to L.A."  Hmmm.

All in? I wonder what that means.

6/160? 7/170-180?

How many articles is that now that say "The yanks will pursue Sabathia"

Manny loves LA! Colletti, give him 3 years 65-70 million. Keep him in LA.

Well it's about time the OWNER took charge for the Yankees. The past year or two has been horrible for the Yankees. Cashman didn't make a move for Santana, Haren, or Harden when we needed pitching the most. I'm glad that the Steinbrenners finally are taking charge and going all out for the ACE WE NEED. What we lacked all of last year was pitching, which costed us the playoffs. With a front 3 in our rotation of

1. Sabathia (if he accepts offer)
2. Wang
3. Chamberlain

Our top 3 could match pretty much any in baseball. Many anti yankee fans will comment and criticize me for my greed, but it's a relief to me that the Steinbrenners have control over this off season, and I have full trust in them that they will get the job done to return us to the playoffs.

"but it's a relief to me that the Steinbrenners have control over this off season"

And it's a relief to Red Sox fans and the rest of the AL East. Historically Steinbrenner's moves don't win championships.

Yes i understand that, that has happened ever since we won #26 in 2000. But, I think it would be a huge mistake for the Yankees not to sign him, because of all he brings to the table: Durability, desire to win, power pitching, domination. Nobody can disagree that signing Sabathia would be a good move, for now at least lol.

First Heyman says the Mets won't go after Manny. Then he said they would. Now a "mystery GM" says they will. I wonder what his story will be next week.

Brewcrew, you are underestimating the value of Cain. Obviously he is not worth the 3 for 1. But to say Fielder is worth more than Cain is "obsurd"

I personally don't feel the Mets should go after Manny if it takes 5 years to grab him. He's what, 36? He plays a bad left field now, imagine when he's 41 and playing in the outfield. That scares me just thinking about it. Yeah, he's a great, hall of fame hitter but his defense is a huge negative, especially when he'll be 41. If he'd take a 3/75, then I'd be all for it.

As much as i want the Yankees to get Sabathia, im getting sick of these little sentences about Sabathia. I say that MLBTR should put all the Sabathia rumors in at night in the same post instead of 2 or 3.

JJ Hardy had a better offensive season than the 2007 NL MVP Jimmy Rollins. True. Look it up.

JJ would be worth as much as Prince, I'd like to see JJ/Prince for Gordon/Grienke.

I want to clarify, J Rollins 2008 season, was worse than JJs.

Wow.. If the Giants could milk Fielder and Hardy out of the Brewers for just Cain, that would be the trade rape of the century..

That would definately be one of the best trades in the past decade. 2 possible MVP's for one ace. I like it for San Fran, that would be an amazing trade for the Giants.

Just to let everyone know, JJ Hardy is going nowhere. He will be playing 3B for the Brewers next year.

As for the Manny quote about thanking "Scott" for bringing him to LA.

I don't know HOW in the world the sports writers of the world missed this but as Manny was saying that to the camera while being interviewed, Scott Akasaki, the Dodgers traveling secretary was standing next to the camera and came into the shot at the end of his statement. So it could be Boras, but he could also be talking about Scott Akasaki as he is a jokester and they were laughing as they both walked away.

"JJ would be worth as much as Prince, I'd like to see JJ/Prince for Gordon/Grienke."

As much as I don't want the Royals to move Greinke, I wouldn't be disappointed in this. I think maybe I'd rather move Butler than Gordon, because if you bring in Fielder Butler becomes the most expendable.

The thing is, I doubt it would happen. I think the Royals are going to tighten their sphincters this offseason. They would like to sign Furcal and/or a SP in the middle tier and give Shealy a try at 1B.

Moore says big changes are on their way, but I am guessing he is going to leave guys like Gload, Gathright, Pena, Gobble and Peralta on the scrap heap, since he doesn't seem inclined to expand payroll again this offseason. Trades do seem like an imminent possibility.

"JJ Hardy had a better offensive season than the 2007 NL MVP Jimmy Rollins. True. Look it up. "

...what?
since when is :
.283 BA, 24 HR, 74 RBI, 31 Doubles, 4 Trip 2 SB (Hardy*** 2008)

Better than..
.296 BA,30 HR, 94 RBI,38 Doubles, 20 Triples, 41 SB (Rollins*** 2007 MVP season)
??????????????????????

***Rollins exceeded Hardy (by a considerable amount) in EVERY offensive (and defensive although not pertinent to the argument) Category

I just saw your clarification... lol

I was flabergastered when I read your first comment.. haha sorry

honestly to tell you the truth, i do not want Manny Ramirez to come to the mets seriously come on, if we spend all that money to bring in Ramirez, what about the money for a closer, and some bullpen help, we also need a second baseman too i would like to see the mets go out to get either Orlando Hudson, or Brian Roberts, which they know how to play the game. Hopefully we can get rid of Schoweneiss this off season because he is garbage in the Mets bullpen along with Aaron Heilman. I didn't like the fact of how they made Ayala the closer. I understand he can throw strikes but i think thats why he gets hit all the time. Sometimes you got to mix in some nasty off speed pitches out of the strike zone like K-Rod to get an out,but i wouldn't want to see him for the mets next season either. Someone is going to have to step up and become the closer for 2009 because i do not want to see the mets spending all there money for a closer like K-Rod who didn't seem to amaze me during the post season game this year giving up a 2 run homerun to Drew to give up the lead to Boston, and also throwing so many pitches to get out of the 9th inning, though he cleaned up his own mess. Hopefully the mets can get a closer for a decent price. But honestly to tell you the truth spending so much money on a closer is a waste of money. I've seen someone posted something about that here before but the closer position is over rated i mean come on they only pitch like one freak'n inning and if you play for a crappy team how often to you get save opportunities closers just get paid way too much for the work that they do. Seriously Don't any of you agree with that?

BrewCrew: What makes you think you can even be a respectable team next year unless you sign a FA pitcher? You technically have 1 1/2 starters if Sabathia and sheets depart as expected.

Rotation:
Galardo
Dave Bu...
???

Matt Cain would mean a lot to you, trust me.

aznx.... I would rather throw the money at Manny then throw it at Orlando Hudson. I love Hudson, but his bat won't play well in NY and outside a great hitting enviroment, his glove is outstanding, but not worth 8 figures, and he has had season ending injuries the last two years. I am not interested in trading any of the farm for a 2B. I don't care who plays 2B, as long as they can field a little bit and put the ball in play. With the way Ramon Martinez played at the end of the year, I wouldn't mind giving him a shot. Mark Loretta, Mark Grudzalaniek (sp?), somebody like this would be fine. Where is Jose Valentin? There is a leader. He was a big part of the 2006 team, and he was the "gritty team leader" everybody wants. I understand he is old, but if he is cheap, so what. Just make sure you have a guy like Ramon Martinez/Argenis Reyes/ Damion Easley incase he goes down. I would be good with an Easley/Valentin platoon. I am not for moving Schoeneweis. No point. Same with Heilman, but for different reasons. Schoeneweis, if used against only lefties, is fine. LHB posted a .178/.243/.277 line against Show. With a more solid pen, he won't have to be used out of his comfort zone and can concentrate on getting out lefties, which is his job. Heilman, I know, I know, he was horrible this year. But that is coming off of 3 solid years. Typical NY way of thinking, trade for/ sign a guy when his value is at its highest, dump him when it is at its lowest. There has been interest in Heilman over the last few seasons, so the guy obviously is somewhat well thought of throughout the league. So give him a shot at bouncing back before just dumping him. Or better yet, give him a shot at the number 5 spot in the rotation in April. At best, you get a solid number 5 guy or better for a very cheap price, in a market where even the most mediocre pitching fetches 10 million a year. If Heilman could even post a 4.75/1.30 line in the 5 spot, he is a valuable asset at his price tag. I happen to think he could have more success there, and eat innings at that. I definitely make a run at Manny, though anything more then 3 years is out of the question. How about a 2/55 deal with an option for a 3rd year at 30 million with a 10 million dollar buyout, and some incentives that could get the total deal up to around 100 million. The way I look at it is, you are at worst on the hook for two years with the guy, but he is getting paid a ton, and has the option for 30 million in 2011, which even if he takes the buyout and walks, he would not get the 20 million at age 39 to make him the 30 he would have made from NY. And from the Mets perspective, if you are in a position where you want to pickup his 3rd year option, then he has obviously produced for them and they have no problem paying the money. If something goes wrong after year 1, then you have a really bad contract for one year, and you bite the bullet and pay him the 10 million. I go for it. The Mets have a lot of latino players, a GM in Omar who has always loved Manny, and a very player friendly manager in Jerry Manuel. He also grew up in NY, and could finish his HOF career here with a couple more shots at another ring. There are definitely pro's and cons, but for Manny's production, I'll roll the dice.

I'm sorry for the huge paragraph. I meant to space it out a bit. My bad.

and at worst he stinks it up and then you evaluate the situation at that point.

ok nrmax88 suppose we do get Manny. If all the money goes to Manny who is going to be our closer?

Take the 16 mil that K-Rod wanted, and sign Matt Herges, Juan Cruz, Doug Brocail, Luis Ayala, and Brandon Lyon. Trade a few marginal prospects to Toronto for BJ Ryan and take the rest of his deal. Boom.

"Take the 16 mil that K-Rod wanted, and sign Matt Herges, Juan Cruz, Doug Brocail, Luis Ayala, and Brandon Lyon. Trade a few marginal prospects to Toronto for BJ Ryan and take the rest of his deal. Boom."

Wouldn't you have to take like $10M of that $16M to give to Ryan though? That would leave enough money to sign one of those guys, maybe two. But then again I personally love the idea of going after Ryan. He'd make for an easy replacement for Wagner, as both are power lefties. If the Mets offered something like Bobby Parnell and Ruben Tejeda, I'm sure the Jays would listen. I really think that signing Rodriguez would be a mistake. They're far better off looking at trades to add a closer, and then looking to free agency to fill the gaps in the bullpen. That Rodriguez signing could look awful by 2011.

I would like to the Phillies sign Manny...They were interested in trading for him,but didn't have the prospects and Pat Burrell is likely not coming back and they'll need somebody to replace him,so Manny seems like the perfect fit and him can easily hit 40 homers in the Phils small ballpark.

Fair enough Scribble. It really all depends what the Wilpons are willing to do. They have some guys coming off the books, so depending on whether they are willing to raise payroll (although after 07 and 08, going into a new stadium, I think the real question is how much payroll they are willing to add), they could possibly add Manny (lets just say for something like I suggested. A huge annual salary for less years. 25-27 mil for 2 years with a 3rd year team option). With El Duque (6.5), Alou(7.5), Pedro (11), coming off the books that covers almost all of the Manny deal. Now lets say Wilpons will raise payroll 25 million going into CitiField. Lets say they trade Parnell and A ball prospect for Ryan and are paying 11 million a year for him. Sign Juan Cruz for 5 million. Sign Doug Brocail for 2 million. Sign Luis Ayala for 3 or 4 million. Sign Matt Herges for a mil. So that about 20 million spent on the pen, to bring in Ryan, Herges, Cruz, Brocail, and Ayala. Beats spending 16 million for K-Rod. Now Resign Pedro for a big paycut, and let Heilman try out for the last spot with Niese waiting in AAA. Also bring in a guy or two like Bartolo Colon for insurance. Keep your Claudio Vargas' and Tony Armas'. With Manny added into the current Met lineup, I am okay with a rotation of Johan, Pelfrey, Maine, Pedro, and Heilman with a solidified bullpen. If the Mets are willing to add 25-30 million to their payroll going into the new stadium, I think all of this can get done.

Max & Scribble. You're both right about fixing THE problem over the last 2 years, namely the bullpen. Bring in 3-4 new faces. K-Rod is not worth the big bucks. As much as I like Manny, the Mets would be better off using the money on improving the pitching, both starters and relievers. Instead of throwing that money at Manny, why not throw it at Sabathia? Yeah, he'll probably want a little more but it would be worth it. All the offense in the world won't help if you can't pitch when it counts. Proof? Just ask the Cubs.

the best thing the yankees could do is to cut the string on abreu and giambi and give CC watever the hell he wants...Sabathia in NY would at least make us to the playoffs nextyr this year was embarrasing

"Just to let everyone know, JJ Hardy is going nowhere. He will be playing 3B for the Brewers next year."

Wow didn't know that the Brewer's GM had an account on here.

Yes, missing the playoffs one time in like 15 years is really something to be embarrassed about. Especially when you are trying to get some youth into your rotation. I would gladly miss the playoffs for one year to give myself a better chance of having great teams in the future. Phil Hughes is a stud. Hang onto him. He will be more valuable then Johan in a few years, at which point everybody will be praising Cashman for sticking to his guns and not dealing Hughes.

You know, I have been watching James McDonald pitch for the Dodgers and realized a few things. 1) I am glad the Sabathia deal involving him wasn't made, 2) this guy has stuff like Billingsley only that he throws more pitches, 3) The Dodgers can survive the loss of Lowe and not signing Sabathia.

I don't think you have to be a GM to know that one.
