| Red Sox To Pursue Peavy? »

How about some weekend odds and ends?
- Free agent reliever Russ Springer intends to pitch next year, and he prefers the Cardinals. The Cards haven't discussed a contract with him, though, and they might prefer their younger (and cheaper) righthanded relievers.
- Dave Cameron thinks Nate Robertson might be a sleeper, based on his peripheral stats. Boof Bonser is another pitcher whose ERA didn't match up with his other numbers this year.
- Peter Woodfork apparently bowed out of the Mariners GM job competition after his interview. The Ms could decide between Tony LaCava, Jerry DiPoto, Kim Ng, and Jack Zduriencik by Tuesday.
- Scott Boras won a $550K decision against former client Gary Sheffield. Will Sheff make good on his February promise to say "ugly things" about Boras now?
- Phil Rogers speculates on Manny Ramirez in a Cubs uniform, but admits they'd have to somehow move Alfonso Soriano first. Small obstacle: $106MM owed to Soriano over the next six years, plus his full no-trade clause.
- Yahoo's Tim Brown says Barry Bonds could be awarded $100MM or more if the players union wins its collusion case. Bonds would like to play in 2009, but no one expects it.
soriano...right handed power bat to play LF...sounds like the guy that jocketty is looking for as the #1 priority for the offseason...question is...would the reds really take on that big of a contract...

Ramirez in Wrigley field would be more power than in fenway, if he would be willing to play and he an Pinela would get past the 1st week without fistacuffs. Lou would probaly be pummeling him the 1st time Manny didn't run down the 1st base line for not running out a ground ball as Manny has a terrible habit of doing whenever he feels like it, but the power that Manny has to all fields certainly would be awe inspiring to see at Wrigley wouldn't it Cubs fans?

How about Soriano to the Mets as a salary dump? Would slot well into LF at Citi Field?

Ramirez in a Cubs uniform would be a dream come true.
Soriano could go back to the Yankees as a LF then Damon to CF and Matsui to DH. That would be a bad idea for the yankes though.

Don't get too caught up in on what Phil Rogers speculates.

I think Julio Lugo will be a sleeper next year... I bet I could give you a stat to prove that too.
Robertson had a 1.62 WHIP, an opponent batting average of over .300, with more than a .500 slugging, had trouble keeping the ball in the yard, and was incredibly streaky. Basically Cameron's argument is the same the Red Sox used in 2006 when they traded for Jason Johnson. They said all he needed was a good defnsive in field and he'd become a solid middle of the rotation starter. For those of you who don't know how that played out, he was shelled. Yeah, maybe Robertson with a gold glove in field would be better... but he'd probably still top out at a decent #4 man. Great sleeper for the price tag... riiiight.

Cardinals should bring Springer back, they need a veteran in there to help out the young kids.....yeah Franklin will be there but he is a joke.

"I think Julio Lugo will be a sleeper next year... I bet I could give you a stat to prove that too."
Julio Lugo could be had for a used wad of chewing tobacco over this off season if any team wanted him and the Red Sox would probably be glad to pick up maybe up to 1/2 of the 2 years remaining on his salary, but maybe not the option part of his contract if he manages to get the 1200 AB's to kick in the 2011 option somehow in 2009-10.

The Cubs should look to trade Derek Lee and move Soriano to first and then sign Manny...Manny is what could finally get the Cubs over the hump.

Of course Bonds should sue the league. What they did was illegal. But wouldn't it make sense for Bonds to delay the collusion case if he has hopes of playing next year?

"Julio Lugo could be had for a used wad of chewing tobacco over this off season if any team wanted him..."
You stopped reading after my first sentence and didn't bother to get the point of my post. Saying Nate Robertson is a sleeper basically based on the idea that the Tigers in field wasn't great is pretty much ridiculous. Anyone who bothered to watched him realized he looked awful. The Tigers might as well burn the 17M they owe him, at the very least they'd save on firewood.

Start wearing purple,
I read the post, what I wrote regarding Lugo was not meant to be a rebuke with regards to what you posted regarding Johnson, you are correct that it was a bust of a trade.
I was posting here that Lugo also could be had for next to nothing this off season and a team could get him for 1/2 (maybe less than 1/2 of salary)and a team like the Tigers that have another major bust of a contract like Dontrelle Willis on their hands might be a destination, without having to even eat Lugo's salary, just swap contracts and eat a little more that is owed on the contract of Willis.

Springer is expected to get $3.5m. That sounds fair to me. However, while I think he earned it, I also feel he needs to pitch more than one batter every 2 or 3 games. As far as Franklin is concerned, I must agree.

johns,
Sorry, but people tend to get vicious on this site, sometimes it's best to respond in kind. Yeah, Lugo can be had for almost nothing. But I'm betting the Sox still get a bite, a B prospect for Lugo and 75% of the money on his contract. Runners up in the Furcal, maybe. But I don't see a Willis/Lugo deal ever happening, the Sox wouldn't risk giving him a spot in the rotation.

I must admit, I don't know what FIP is all about... but took a look at Nate R's numbers, and just don't see anything to suggest he didn't have an awful year (even by his mediocre standards).
As a Braves fan, I'm always on the lookout for starting pitching help, but think I'll suggest that Frank Wren pass on this "opportunity."

Cameron's point with Robertson...his strikeout, walk numbers are around his normal rates. 6 K/9, 3 BB/9 remains possible. He had those rates when he posted a 3.84 ERA in '06.
