Red Sox Exercise Wakefield's Option

1:48pm: Tony Massarotti of the Boston Globe says it's official, Wakefield will be back with Boston in '09.

8:42am: According to Sean McAdam of the Boston Herald, the Red Sox are expected to exercise Tim Wakefield's 2009 option today.  Wakefield recently completed his year-end physical and MRI.

Wakefield, 42, posted a 4.13 ERA in 181 innings this year.  In an unmatched show of loyalty to the Sox, the knuckleballer gave the team a perpetual $4MM option.  Once again it was an easy decision to exercise.

Easy decision for the Sox. He had numerous quality starts, and $4M for a #5 starter, who can get you 10 wins, is below inexpensive.

As shown year in and year out, you need at least six starters, period. He's fine in the role of a #5.

Next year, leave him off the playoff roster.

Good. He's easily one of the top #5 pitchers in baseball, a bargain at 4M. It may be a coin flip as to whether or not the knuckler is on but I think it's a chance worth taking.

If ever there was a defining annual event that could be labeled a no-brainer in baseball, this is it. Wakefield's welcome back for as long as he can keep his ERA under 4.50 and give us 150 innings.

Question? Who would you pick? Pitcher 1 or 2?

Pitcher Games Started Innings Wins Losses Quality Starts WHIP

#1 30 181 10 11 18 1.18
#2 27 173 10 11 19 1.18

Pretty darn close aren’t they. Well pitcher 1 is our own beloved Tim Wakefield and pitcher 2 is one of the most sought after pitchers in the game Jake Peavy. I love Peavey and yes, he is a much better pitcher with a great future.
This was an easy decision for the Sox. Wake was fantastic the first half of the season before his shoulder problems. On the year he was one behind Lester for second on the team in quality starts. His 18 QS was 37th in all of major league baseball. Here are some of his other rankings.

Stat Number American League Majors

ERA 4.13 30th 40th
Wins 10 34th 66th
Whip 1.18 9th 17th
OPS .689 11th 28th

Wake cost $400,000 per win. That is very cheap in today’s market.

Mike Hampton $5,300,000 per win
Tim Hudson $1,700,000 per win
Randy Johnson $1,370,000 per win
Pedro $2,360,000 per win
Jarrod Washburn $1,960,000 per win

Like most everyone will agree one, picking up this never ending 4 mil option on Wake is an obvious choice. This guy is a Hoyte Wilhelm like guy that could pitch until he is 50 if his back holds up and be effective.

Remember too that Wakefield is like Maddux in that he is a starter who can warm up very quickly. That makes him value out of the bullpen as well.

First, Wakefield is obvious at $4 Million. Second, Wakefield is not Peavy. W/L has got to be one of the worst comparison stats. It is like comparing HR allowed stats between Petco and Citizens Bank. Peavy, historically, has been a fantastic pitcher. WHIP over the past five years is dominated by Peavy. ERA+ by Peavy is dominating over Wakefield, including this past season. Peavy - 134, Wakefield - 112. This includes the park adjustment. This does not mean that i don't think Wake is fantastic (and even better at the bargain of $4M), just don't compare him to Peavy, because he has had 3 years in his 16 year career that are comparable to Peavy's average year.

As I said there is no doubt that Peavy is the better pitcher but there is no doubt that he is one of the best if not the best bargans in baseball. I was comparing those stats to show that Wake is better than most people think. And you may have noticed that I compared stats from 2008 only. He is one of the best 5th starters in the game and on some teams he would be a number 3 starter.

Not a Red Sox fan, but it is quite hard to find guys like this in baseball nowadays. Pretty awesome.

Definitely a obvious and good move from the Sox.

I am still trying to figure out whether some one really just compared Wakefield to Peavy. Can we start having a registration requirement to post or something?

"I am still trying to figure out whether some one really just compared Wakefield to Peavy."

I think you missed the point of that post. They did the comparison with the full knowledge that Peavy is an ace and Wake is a #4 or #5. The point was to show that Wake is still an effective pitcher who eats innings and puts up quality starts.

Wakefield is a terrible pitcher, I thought the Redsox had a farm system. Why would you want to put a batting practice pitcher on your squad. What happen to the genius Theo's young pitching studs, this is a joke signing.

Paulie, you think Theo is a genius?

That's pretty cool
