« Jake Peavy Rumors: Wednesday | Main | Coco Crisp Traded To Royals »
ESPN's Jerry Crasnick looks at nine veteran players and estimates their chances of retiring. He assesses the situations of Jim Edmonds, Garret Anderson, Ken Griffey Jr., Cliff Floyd, Jeff Kent, Nomar Garciaparra, Luis Gonzalez, Frank Thomas, and Moises Alou.
Crasnick feels Edmonds, Anderson, Griffey, and Floyd are likely to play, while the rest are not. Of the long shots, Thomas seems most intent on playing in '09.

Look for the Dodgers to pursue at least five of these guys.

I could see Frank Thomas being a good signing for a team like the Rays or Twins. Neither has a particularly strong DH option and both could use a RH power hitter.
Thomas has shown a willingness to sign for cheap in the past (he signed with the A's for $500,000 in 2006). So unlike some of the guys out there, he has already swallowed his pride and shown that he is more interested in playing than trying to bank on his past accomplishments.
While his overall numbers are crud (.240/.349/.374), he was OK before going down with an injury and has generally been a slow starter (he hit .258/.372/.444 before the injury, but only .211/.312/.263 after returning).
He might be particularly interesting if he was willing to platoon. He still does OK against righties, but is generally stronger against lefties.

Thomas seems to be about as good a bet to contribute as Mike Piazza. And he'd probably cost more.
