« Rockies Rumors: Holliday, Atkins, Podsednik | Main | Battle For Teixeira »
Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic talked to Diamondbacks GM Josh Byrnes, who says the team will explore second base options rather than move Mark Reynolds from third base.
One option is Ramon Vazquez, whose agent has spoken with the D'Backs. Vazquez seeks a two-year deal. The 32 year-old hit .290/.365/.430 in 347 plate appearances, but struggled against lefties. He's played mostly third base in recent years.

Here's a trade thought. Cubs trade D Lee and R Cedeno or M Fontenot to Arizona for Conor Jackson. Not sure how much Jackson is making, but it has to be substantially less then Lee. And Lee would most likely waive his no-trade as long as he is moved out West.
The Cubs could then continue to try and get Peavy (along with Giles to play right). I think they have a better chance if they ask for Giles to be included since it would save the Padres a lot of money. If that doesn't work (and I don't think it does) then they could go after Abreu and re-sign Dempster.
Personally, I'd love to see Hendry trade Lee for Jackson! Makes the Cubs younger and gives them a bit more flexability.

I would love that deal for the Cubs. They get the lefty bat for their lineup that they desperately want, and it doesn't cost them much financially. This deal would be great for the Cubs, so much that it's really not plausible.

Wait - I just checked ESPN and it says Conor Jackson bats righthanded. The deal would make more sense if he batted lefty. The Cubs certainly don't want another righthanded bat in the lineup. Plus, I don't see why we would need to throw another player in. If you compare stats between Jackson and Lee, they're about the same. Averages and OBP pretty close, power advantage to Lee, Jackson makes less and is younger but Lee probably plays better defense.

Geez, maybe the Cubs will throw in Zambrano too! The cubs wouldn't trade Lee straight up for Jackson!

" Geez, maybe the Cubs will throw in Zambrano too! The cubs wouldn't trade Lee straight up for Jackson!"
And why wouldn't they? If anything, Arizona would be the one to nix that deal. Jackson makes next to nothing in salary and is locked up for 3 more years (I think). I'd even go as far to say the Cubs would need to make it Lee and Theriot just to make it more tempting for Arizona.
Lee is 7 years older than Jackson. As far as talent goes I'd almost say they are a wash with Lee the better defensive player.
The Cubs have to find a way to cut salary thanks to Hendry's recent spending spree. This would be one way of doing that without losing much of anything. And it saves them over 10 million that they could then use elsewhere.......maybe to find a leadoff hitter!

Sqweeek is right.
Why the hell do the Diamondbacks trade Conor Jackson? He should be the closest thing to untouchable on that offensively devoid team. He's cheap, and a solid source of offense. Don't trade him. Lee and Cedeno/Fontenot for Jackson is a horrible deal for the Diamondbacks.
And, CoJack is worth MUCH more than Lee, due to his age and team control/contract status.
I could see Kelly Johnson for Max Scherzer. Fills need for both sides.

The D-Backs need a closer, right? Kelly Johnson and Rafael Soriano for Jackson. Kotchman and Soriano? Kotchman, Soriano and KJ for Jackson and a prospect? No, wait. I love KJ, so forget it.

As a D-Backs fan, I would love to see Derek Lee as a D-Back. However the D-Backs aren't really in a position to trade for anyone in the near future. Recall last off season the D-Backs traded six of their top prospects to the A's for Dan Haren. That pretty much wiped out their farm system. Plus, the the D-Backs don't have much to spend this off season as a VERY large amount of their money was used to pay for Adam Dunn. The D-Backs don't have much money to work with this off season.
The only way I could see the D-Backs trading for Derek Lee ($13 Million) is if the Cubs were willing to take Eric Byrnes ($11 Million) off their hands, and also maybe Chad Tracy ($4.75 Million)(He bats lefty though).
Jackson isn't isn't going anywhere as he and Stephen Drew are the only reliable hitters on a strike-out happy team.
The D-Backs have no need for Soriano as they have 5 outfielders as it is (CoJack, Eric Byrnes, Chris Young, Justin Upton, and Alex Romero). Nor do they need a closer as Chad Qualls was outstanding for them towards the end of the season, and earned his closer promotion. The also have Jon Rauch in the bullpen who will more likely than not be himself by next season.
I think they have $10-$15 million to spend this off season, and in addition to finding a replacement second baseman. Another major priority for the D-Backs this off season is to try to resign Randy Johnson.
I believe they also are going to have around 9 additonal draft picks in the top 75 picks the next draft which aren't cheap (11 picks if Randy Johnson signs elsewhere).
And in addition to all of this. There is also a tremendous amount amount of pressure by the Diamondbacks fans on the D-Backs management to extend the contract of Brandon Webb. This isn't a huge issue as of the moment as I believe he is under contract until 2010. Though Brandon says he really wants to stay in Arizona, he has implied that he is very interested in seeing what kind of offers C.C. Sabathia gets in the coming weeks.
