I wouldn't be surprised to see the Mets end up with Rodriguez at this point. It really seems like his demands are coming down, and the Mets could very well get him for something like 4/56, which would be a fairly tolerable contract. Then maybe they could sign a Ohman/Cruz type and call it a day with those two and whatever is left over from the old bullpen.
Time to move on to that rotation..

I can completely understand the Mets front office feeling like they need to sign K-Rod after the last 2 seasons.
I just hope they use the high supply/low demand of available closers to push it under 5 years and under 15 mil per.
Lock him up, snatch a couple dependable relievers, and make a play on two reliable starters.

I'm hoping Omar can get K-Rod down to a 4/52 maybe slightly higher. If not, I'd be ok with Fuentes...33 is not that old. If it comes down to or the other and the difference is 1-2m/year, I'd definitely go K-Rod

Or, the Mets could play it smart, and look at players like Kerry Wood and Juan Cruz.

Imagine the MUTTS buying more players, must be nice tohave an unlimited budget.
Castillo, Billy Wagner....hope the rest of your bum free agents turn out the same. Try a novel approach...the farm system.
Posted by: crazyman | November 18, 2008 at 11:51 AM
Hey Mets...try your own farm system...other teams make it work
Posted by: crazyman | November 18, 2008 at 11:54 AM
crazyman:
FYI: Castillo was traded here and then resigned.
As to all the farm system comments:
- Jose Reyes
- David Wright
- Joe Smith
- Mike Pelfrey
- Jonathan Niese

138 million dollars and you got to watch the playoffs from your couch. LOL Maybe the Mutts fans could call it a bad investment and get a tax write off

You just made my point 20 percent of your roster is homegrown
SPEND SPEND SPEND SOME MORE

It's silly to blast the mets for picking up free agents. You can blast them for picking up over the hill free agents, but to say that they don't use their farm is ridiculous. Although their is some truth to the argument that picking up free agents inherently weakens your farm. If you keep forgoing your 1st/2nd round and sandwich picks, your system is bound to suffer.
Posted by: ChicoWalker | November 18, 2008 at 12:29 PM
C Schneider - trade
1B Delgado - trade
2b Castillo - trade
SS Reyes - Homegrown
3B Wright - Homegrown
RF Church - Trade
CF Beltran - FA
LF Murphy/Evans - Homegrown
LF Alou(DL) - FA
SP Santana - Trade
SP Pelfrey - Homegrown
SP Maine - Trade
SP Perez - Trade
SP Martinez - FA
RP Wagner(DL) - FA
RP Schoewenweis - FA
RP Heilman - Homegrown
RP Feliciano - Homegrown
RP Smith - Howmegrown
I'm not going to get into the bench players because it's relatively useless to argue, but the team the mets ended the season with had about 5 impact (using the term loosely, Alou was supposed to start so i guess he counts) free agents. Trading for players is using your farm.
Posted by: ChicoWalker | November 18, 2008 at 12:37 PM
Beltran, pedro, alou, shoenweis, and wagner were the only guys of note to play for the mets last year. Everyone else was either homegrown or acquired via trade. They spend money on free agents, but there are certainly teams who spend more and build their teams that way. The sox, yankees, mariners, and cubs have a ton more free agent acquisitions on their roster, and teams like the royals, blue jays, and a's have just as many. The only difference is that the mets seem to be connected to big names.

Okay let's not get into a little girl fight on here.
"Or, the Mets could play it smart, and look at players like Kerry Wood and Juan Cruz."
I agree with this, but only to a certain extent. If Wood costs 3/33, and Rodriguez costs 4/52, then I think you might as well sign K-Rod. The salary and contract differences aren't large and the Mets would really need the ensured durability of Rodriguez. If they could land Wood for 2/20 though, then no doubt that I would sign Kerry over Rodriguez.
Posted by: scribbletone | November 18, 2008 at 12:46 PM
The Mets should sign him right now before he gets awarded the AL MVP in a few hours. If he doesnt get it they should give it to Quentin.
Posted by: dbacks2008 | November 18, 2008 at 12:51 PM
If K-Rod wins MVP then I'm never acknowledging another BBWAA award ever again. Ever.
Posted by: scribbletone | November 18, 2008 at 01:06 PM
What? You mean the 5th best closer in the A.L. shouldn't be considered for MVP? Omar can wait as long as he wants. There are 4 legit closing options out there in K-Rod, Fuentes, Wood, and Hoffman. 5 if you count Smoltz. Then there are the trade options. I say sign whichever guy comes the cheapest and for the fewest years. By the way, I will be the guy telling everybody I told you so if/when the K-Rod sings turns into a disaster. Which it will.
Posted by: nrmax88 | November 18, 2008 at 01:29 PM
Hi Hater, I am not a Yankee fan either. At least they have won a championship or two by spending money. The Mutts just choke.
Posted by: crazyman | November 18, 2008 at 01:31 PM
If/when it turns into a disaster for the Mets, which it will if the Mets sign him. Not so much in LA, but if he signs in NY, it will get ugly once the fans who only know him by his numbers realize he is not nearly as dominant as one would think. And if he repeats his 07 and 08 post seasons displays, that will be the icing on the cake.
Posted by: nrmax88 | November 18, 2008 at 01:32 PM
"If K-Rod wins MVP then I'm never acknowledging another BBWAA award ever again. Ever."
Pedroia won it. K-Rod placed 6th, way too high though (above guys like Kinsler, Longoria, Grady Sizemore, Hamilton, etc.)
LOL @ Mets fans who say they *have* to get K-Rod. No, you don't. The Mets need a good bullpen. Bullpen =/= K-Rod. K-Rod is not the be all, end all of the bullpen. The bullpen can still suck with K-Rod in it, just like the pen svcked with Wagner in it.
Posted by: melonis rex | November 18, 2008 at 01:34 PM
Signing K-Rod without improving the bridge to get to K-Rod would end up as a waste of money. I mean, what's the point of buying a closer for ~$15mil a year, if your bullpen blows it before you get to the 9th inning?
How many games did that bullpen blow before they even got to the closer?
Signing K-Rod would cost you a lot of money, then how much would you have left to fill that starting rotation (Santana, Pelfrey, Maine?, then who?), not to mention improve the bullpen.
Posted by: Ink&Paper | November 18, 2008 at 01:40 PM
"Not so much in LA, but if he signs in NY, it will get ugly once the fans who only know him by his numbers realize he is not nearly as dominant as one would think."
Oh yeah. Two thirds of his division competition had the worst offenses in MLB. And even then, he was giving up hits and/or walks in almost every save. When you're facing teams who have a sub-.700 team OPS(which the A's did), you better be getting through the lineup 1-2-3 the majority of the time.
Posted by: melonis rex | November 18, 2008 at 01:42 PM
HiHater,
haha. Melonis is right. Unless the Mets are planning on having K-ROD pitch 2-3 innings per night they've got a lot more work to do. I hope for one this drags out while others like Cruz, Beimel, (Affeldt already did) and others get picked up so the Mets end up with K-Rod as their only bullpen piece. Although it would be nice if they didn't use their crappy bullpen as an excuse they lost. If i have to hear again how many saves they blew after the 7th and 8th innings I think I'll scream.
Posted by: philsWSchamps | November 18, 2008 at 02:52 PM
Well K-Rod is good and Hispanic so there's no wonder why Minaya doesn't want him haha.
Posted by: Umair | November 18, 2008 at 03:28 PM
crazyman is definitely a braves fan, braves fans use the term "mutts" most frequently.
crazyman, there's no need to insult the mets because they spend. the only good homegrown braves are chipper and mccann. and i wouldnt call the braves 14 nl east titles in a row a dynasty, because they've only won 1 championship in all those years.
Posted by: nymforlife | November 18, 2008 at 04:21 PM
crazyman forgets that we used a huge chunck of our farm system on the santana trade so if anything, going for free agents is helping our farm system. personally i want krod over fuentes but whoever we get, he will be overrated because the closer position is the most overrated position in baseball and they do not deserve to be paid more than some allstars. and crazyman, theres no need to hate on the mets, whoever you like, the mets are probably better than them, even if you are a phils or braves fan so stop talking crap about the mets. im a mutt fan and proud.
Posted by: metsfan23 | November 18, 2008 at 04:32 PM

Actually I've admittedly use that term a lot over the past 2 years. And I've heard Yankee fans saying it too. Could be any of us.
Metsfan23,
actually when you're closer is 48 for 48, and you're 87-0 when leading after 8, its not that over-rated a position. Now if you've blown 27 saves then maybe it is. It all depends on your perspective.

If teams hated the Mets because of their dancing and antics before, what will they think of them if they sign K-Rod who is the biggest showboat in MLB?
Posted by: kwhitey | November 18, 2008 at 05:33 PM
i consider it overrated because i tihnk they get paid to much money to pitch one inning, yes it is an important position but money-wise, i feel its overrated. for example, if krod does get the $15 million he wants or anything around that, he would be getting paid more than david ($5,250,000) and jose reyes ($4,375,00) combined. It's pretty obvious to say that the Mets as a whole get way more production from reyes and wright than they wouldjust from krod. the mets need a closer, yes a closer is important, but they are just overpaid. but when you think about, all mlb players are overpaid.
Posted by: metsfan23 | November 18, 2008 at 05:34 PM
Forget K-Rod. Gimme Fuentes, Lowe and Manny and let's go: http://www.ontheblack.com/2008/11/17/all-i-want-for-the-holidays-is

To all the Met haters out there: we love it. Hate us all you want. We're gonna showboat anyway, because we've got money and you don't. Frankie Rodriguez is such a perfect fit for the Mets, it's ridiculous. Fourth-best closer in baseball, for 4/52. Do it. Oh, and if they sign Brian "Can't Keep His Job in a Pennant Race" Fuentes or Kerry "The Walking Injury" Wood, I'm jumping off a bridge. K-Rod, Street, and Cruz should at least be a decent start.
Posted by: metsobsessed | November 18, 2008 at 08:42 PM
I'm a Yankee fan, we have more money than you do and I can't wait to see the Nationals and the Marlins scoring game winning runs off of your overrated new closer in the final week of the season to complete choke #3.
Posted by: kwhitey | November 18, 2008 at 09:09 PM
"Oh, and if they sign Brian "Can't Keep His Job in a Pennant Race" Fuentes or Kerry "The Walking Injury" Wood, I'm jumping off a bridge."
Let's just say I'm not holding my breath over that one. You don't have a nickname for Frankie "BB-Rod" Rodriguez? How about K "I wasn't paying attention because I was mad over a call and I let a ball roll past me to let Jason Kendall score the winning run" Rod? How about Frankie " I get torched in the playoffs by the Red Sox" Rod?

Also, Toby Hyde has an interesting piece on this situation. He makes the case for the Mets signing Wood.

Interesting read. He also seems to prefer Hoffman over K-Rod, understandably.

Toby Hyde gains points in my book with his usage of the word "bullpen ace" in substitution of "closer"
Posted by: melonis rex | November 19, 2008 at 12:34 AM
Toby Hyde is good. He is (imo) by far the best among the Mets blogosphere. I looked for so long to find a reliable Mets writer that wasn't biased one way or the other, and he does great analysis, especially on minor league guys. Plus, he is more of a stat head type analyst, which is my style. I also like the "Bullpen Ace" tag.
