Odds & Ends: Amaro, Marte, Griffey

Some Odds & Ends to begin the day:

  • The Phillies are expected to announce Ruben Amaro Jr. as their next General Manager on Monday. Says Ken Mandel of MLB.com, "Amaro, 43, served as a batboy for the Phillies from 1980-83, and played for the Phillies from 1992-93 and 1996-98. He moved into the front office after retiring as a player." As the clubs Assistant General Manager, he's been the heir apparent to the 71-year-old Pat Gillick as GM.
  • The Yankees are expected to decline Damaso Marte's $6MM option, according to George King III of the New York Post. Marte made $2MM this year and the Yankees are opting to buy him out for $250,000. I expect them to make an attempt to sign him to a new contract but no details yet.
  • Larry Stone of the Seattle Times says Ken Griffey Jr. is open to returing to Seattle. No comment from M's new GM Jack Zduriencik.

No, I think they're going to decline and offer arb to get the 2 picks. They'll need it if they're going after CC and Tex.

This is a mistake. He will not be back now and they will miss this guy. he just needed a year to adjust to a new league (like beckett in '06) and should have a good year next season. Now the Yanks are going to be short a reliever, on top of chancing for Sabathia, Burnet etc.. in the FA market this off season.

Its not a mistake; like the top guy said you decline the $6MM option and offer him arbitration. Either he signs elsewhere and nets picks, he signs with NY for less than the option amount or (unlikely) he accepts arbitration and works off his $2MM 2008 base.

It's a mistake with a pitching staff as bad as the Yankees currently have and am not saying that just because am not a Yankee fan either. I understand full well that they plan on offering him arbitration, but this team needs quality arms and they are taking a chance with 1 of the best that they currently have the possibility of controlling for draft picks (which i understand they also really need) and since when has finances really been of such major importance in the past?

it just seems like a huge gamble for a quality relieve, a lefty as well no less.

I hope he does stay, but if he doesn't the Yanks will not be short a reliever. For a change the pen is the least of their worries. They have Bruney, Veras, Ramirez, Coke, Aceves, Guise, Robertson. Then there is also Sanchez and Albeledejo who are coming back from injury.

What's bad about the Yankees pitching staff? Better than average RA and component rates last year and one has to assume they'll be better in 2009 given the predicted offseason moves. Figure the add one, probably two, big starters plus the return of Wang plus (hopefully) full seasons from Chamberlain and Hughes netted against losing Mussina (very good in 2008), possibly Pettitte (who was below league average) and possibly Marte. Doesn't look bad to me on paper/spreadsheet.

It really sucks that the Yankees gave up Jose Tabata i heard he is ripping the ball for one Pittsburgh's minor league teams... anyway i think they should let Marte go and net the draft picks because they are going to need it since they want to acquire CC and Tex... and maybe even Manny... that would cost 6 picks... letting Marte go, Abreu go, and Pudge go would give them 5 picks so its equivalent to upgrading drastically while only losing 1 draft pick (i like it since this is a weaker draft class) The pen will be fine as it was a strong point this season and the Yankees have many young pitchers that can thrive in the MLB (Mark Melancon, Humberto Sanchez, etc) *Melancon reminds me of John Wetland (just saying)*...They can also offer Mussina and Pettitte arbitration because if they accept their here for another year, if not they become free agents and maybe want to play again for the Yankees or someone else... I'm pretty sure Mussina would be enticed by a 3 year deal from the Padres or Braves if he does become a free agent and declines the Yankees arbitration/1 year deal...

I'm ok with moving Tabata when they did; he was showing no power and the Yankees just can't keep playing with moderate at best power in the corners of their OF. It was a good risk at the time, just didn't quite work out. So it goes.

Does Melancon write weird poetry in the bullpen?

NJM,

The pitching staff is made up of just what you said in your own post "possibly", "probably" and "hopefully" as in injured returnees (major injuries) FA signees and unproven rookies.

I am not trying to dice the Yankees at all, just disagree with not grabbing one of the best lefty relievers they could have had without taking a chance on losing him.

Id rather get 2 draft picks than a lefty specialist. What I learned about Marte is that he cant pitch an inning or two. you could only bring him up to face a batter or maybe two. Melancon will do great in the majors. The Yankees got a bullpen packed of young arms which I hope Mo can teach.

Congratulations to Ruben Amaro Jr. I guess Clarkaddison will be on soon to tell us how the Phillies will be "Latin"

Johns: I only used the words possibly/probably because I hate when people speak in definites about things they can't know for sure. However, I think you'd agree with me that there's a 99% chance of the following happening.

1. Either Sabathia, Burnett or Lowe will be in pinstripes next year, likely replacing Mussina's spot, right?

2. Wang back in the Rasner/Ponson slot

So right there, I think we're a better staff than 2008 without any major or outlandish predictions. Add in the other uncertains, the possibility of signing a 2nd major starter, Hughes back and fulfilling expectations, Chamberlain healthy, so on, and we're potentially in really, really good shape.

Regarding Marte; in an offseason of huge predicted spending, I don't blame them for not committing $6MM to him off the bat. He'll still be an option a month from now.

Marte will make significantly more money than $2m through arb. Bet he makes very close to his $6m option.

He is not a lefty only specialist. He is a very solid pitcher. Had a rough couple of outings for NY but was solid besides that.
