Rays Decline Options On Floyd, Miller

According to Joe Smith of the St. Petersburg Times, the Rays declined their 2009 options on Cliff Floyd and Trever Miller.

For Floyd, the Rays chose a $250K buyout over his $2.75MM option.  He may decide to retire.  For Miller, the Rays chose his $400K buyout over a $2MM option.  Miller is a Type B free agent, but the Rays don't figure to offer him arbitration.  The Rays may be in the market for a lefty reliever and DH/right fielder this winter.

Miller declined? Eek. They might resign him though.

He's tough on lefties. Rays have to shore up that bullpen to succeed next year.

Interesting, both were quite useful...if they extended Floyd, they could've always traded him for positive income imo...I think Mets will go after him for that 'veteran presence' thing

I am a little confused about Miller.

I mean, never was a huge fan of his but he did what he was asked to, most of the time.

Well, now we have more funds for FA's and/or more long term deals (Upton, Garza, Navarro)

Dawnrider, Floyd has a damaged shoulder and probably needs surgery to fix it. He's already said he'd rather retire than go through surgery. Picking up his option would be a bad move for the Rays.

Dawnrider, are you drunk?

"They are stupid. They nto going to postseason next year. Its cause they elt these two cheap guys walk. Floyds presence siw orth it. His bat is worth 6M in the market. Hes a beats. Ina full season he can put up 20-25 HR. 90-100 RBI. 30 DO. decent average. good OBP. They are cheap as hell. They need to change the owner of the team, now that they got some ncie players with them. Or open up the 1st layer of there wallets. Please."

It's nice to see you have brushed up on your spelling/grammar in the last 5 minutes or so. You must be on a 3rd grade level right now.

CY33, I think stupid is more likely.

I am equally confused. 2 million for a veteran lefty pitcher is a pretty good bargain. I always felt that Maddon misused Miller. Instead of just using him against left handed hitters, he would bring him in for a full inning all the time and let him face right handed hitters all the time. Never really got that. Hopefully they resign him or bring someone back better that they dont have to pay too much for, like Ohman.

Maybe that misuse had something to do with it. Miller was the weak link in that pen, along with Percival, who the Rays somewhat can't get rid of w/o eating losses (although Wheeler gives competition: why did he get an extension again?)

Maybe the Rays want to fill the lefty void internally, although I don't see any near-MLB ready LH relievers on staff, unless they feel Jake McGee is ready to step in as a LOOGY (but that would be later in the season).

Find a LHRP off waivers and let him be LOOGY? Probably.

Trever Miller wasn't going to command an unreasonable salary (net of $1.6M) from the Rays. Miller probably gained more out of getting his option declined than most players in that position. Unless the Rays know Trever Miller is hurt and haven't made it public, this is a poor move on their part.

...and melonis rex: McGee is out from Tommy John surgery.

"...and melonis rex: McGee is out from Tommy John surgery."

Hence I said later in the 2009 season. I've heard estimates of late 2009 showing in the bigs as a reliever, although that might be a bit too early.

McGee is likely out till mid 09 and probably wouldnt factor in until late 09 or early 2010.

James Houser is an interesting canidate. 2.86 ERA in 08 in AA.
