« No Varitek Talks Yet For Red Sox | Main | Cubs Rumors: Ibanez, Abreu, Teahen »
Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post talked to Rockies manager Clint Hurdle, who said the team has internally discussed lefthanded free agent relievers Alan Embree, Brian Shouse, and Will Ohman. Ken Rosenthal also suggests Embree is a possibility.
Another note from Rosenthal:
The Rockies, at least for the moment, seem content to keep third baseman Garrett Atkins and the three players they acquired in the Matt Holliday trade - left-hander Greg Smith, outfielder Carlos Gonzalez and reliever Huston Street.
Thinking about Street...it makes the most sense to trade him in June or July. Right now the supply for closers outstrips the demand, plus Street did not finish the season as a closer. The Rockies should let him rack up 20 saves, prove he's on top of his game, and then move him during the summer when contenders are desperate for bullpen help.

On the flip side, Street can pitch horribly at Coors Field for the 1st half of the season and his value could drop dramatically.

I think it's in the best interest of the Rockies to let the free agents sign with their teams and see what team is left without a closer and what they'll be willing to give up.
They can always wait until the trade deadline and hope Street can get his value up.

Regardless of how last season ended, Street ended up as a relief pitcher with a 1.21 WHIP and averaged a K an inning in the American League. His stock can just as easily drop pitching in a park where Street's slider might be rendered ineffective.

I think the Rockies should just go with a wait and see approach.
At this point, it's quite evident that Street's value is at a lower point, and a couple successful months in the NL would be a lot to rebuild his value.
Obviously if the Rockies can make a good deal before then, then they might as well, but unless this team can land a future power hitting OF, a good young 2B or some pitching, I'm not sure what they really need.
The Rockies are in a pretty good position, with Fowler, Hawpe and Gonzalez in the outfield, Tulowitzki, Stewart, Nelson, Helton and Atkins in the infield, and Iannetta at catcher, with some great young pitchers like Jimenez, Chacin, Morales, Corpas, etc.

I think the plan, if the keep Atkins, is to move either him or Stewart to left field. So, they would have Atkins/Stewart in left, Gonzalez/Fowler/Spilborghs in center, Hawpe in right. Atkins/Stewart at 3rd, Tulo at SS, Baker/Barmes at 2nd and Helton at 1st.

Yeah I was saying mostly long term.
I would expect them to go along with something like you said, with Iannetta at catcher, Helton , Barmes/Baker, Tulowitzki and Stewart making up the infield, and Atkins, Gonzalez and Hawpe in the outfield, until Fowler is ready at which point Atkins/Hawpe will be moved and Gonzalez will move to a corner spot.
I do think that this team is in very good position though right now, as they seem to be stacked with young talent all over the field.
