« Cubs Focused On Lefthanded Bat | Main | Mets Closer Plan Starts With Free Agents »
Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press talked to Darren Oliver's agent, who said the Tigers and Angels are two of four teams interested in his client. Morosi says the Tigers have also contacted the agents for Trevor Hoffman, Brandon Lyon, David Weathers, and Arthur Rhodes while also expressing interest in Florida's Kevin Gregg.
Oliver, 38, posted a 2.88 ERA in 72 innings. His strikeout rate wasn't great, but he limited walks and home runs. He earned $2MM this year. As a Type A free agent, Oliver comes with the added tax of Detroit's second-round pick in the June '09 draft (assuming the Halos offer arbitration and he declines).
In other Tigers news, MLB.com's Jason Beck says they've yet to contact Freddy Garcia's agent.

I seriously doubt that the Tigers would give up their 1st round pick next year to add Oliver.

sorry, 2nd.
Couldn't read the entire post in order to address what a poor signing this would be.

LOL.

If we sign Oliver over anybody else, it'll be just a poor decision.
Sign Lyon and maybe Rhodes. I'm just not sold on Oliver, especially since he's a Type A.
Also, we should definitely sign Freddy Garcia. He did a decent job at the end of the year and can be a high reward guy for the back end of the rotation.
SP:
Verlander
Galarraga
Bonderman (if healthy)
Miner
Garcia
Robertson/Willis
BP:
Seay
Rodney
Zumaya
A. Lopez
(2 of Cruz/Lyon/Rhodes)
I think that Lyon or Cruz could close. Sign Cordero to a minor league deal and hope he gets healthy.

I'm going to post my projected lineup too.
This is based on the assumption that we could actually trade Willis for Lugo. I hate it, but it could happen. It makes me sick to think we traded good prospects for Willis, and in the end, it could net us Lugo... Lugo for good prospects.
Anyway...
CF Granderson
2B Polanco
RF Ordonez
1B Cabrera
LF Guillen
DH Sheffield
C Ryan
3B Inge
SS Lugo/Santiago
Bench:
Larish
Joyce
Backup C
Lugo/Santiago
Don't bother with Furcal, because it costs too much for too long.

The tigers bullpen was horrible last year, what they need to do is invest in a great starter like K rod rather than one of his simple set up men in darren oliver....especialy if you take in to account the inconsistency of the tigers bullpen since Zumaya first got injuerd at the start of 07 and how it has affected zumaya and the rest of the pen

excuse me invest in a great CLOSER like k rod

That Type A classification is going to kill Oliver's signability. Assuming even the Angels would prefer the 2 picks to having Oliver back, despite the fact that he's been a reliable lefty who can also get righties out.
