« Dodgers Withdraw Manny Offer | Main | Rosenthal's Latest: Peavy, Teixeira, Burnett »
According to MLB.com's Kelly Thesier, the Twins are in contract discussions with Casey Blake and his agent.
Blake's agent, Jim McDowell, said he received the "framework of an offer from the Twins" that they'll work on in more detail.
Blake, who hit .274/.345/.463 last year with the Indians and Dodgers, has had seven teams express interest in him, according to Thesier.
La Velle Neal heard rumblings that the Twins could make a formal offer as early as next week.

Looks like the Twins would be willing to spend some money this year!
Well, it wasn't like I had first thought that Atkins would be coming over here but Blake isn't all that bad for 2-3 years either.
The guy can still drive the ball out of the yard and play solid defense, despite what everyone says.

Blake is the best free agent 3B available, and 3B has been an area of need for the Twins for years now. With that said, Blake isn't a long-term answer at third. He's up there in age and he's shown some signs of decline. If Blake demands any more than 2 years, I think that the Twins should look to trade one of their young starters for someone like Garrett Atkins or Adrian Beltre.

I think Blake would be a perfect fit for the twins right now.

Blake can stay for several years and when Danny Valencia is ready down in AAA, then he can come up in 2010 and maybe get some starts.

Blake is a good idea, if he doesn't cost more than 2 years.
"If Blake demands any more than 2 years, I think that the Twins should look to trade one of their young starters for someone like Garrett Atkins or Adrian Beltre."
As long as "young starter" doesn't mean Slowey, Baker, or Liriano. Those three are off limits. Try to work with Perkins/Blackburn (Perkins had red flags everywhere).

I can see this happening. Blake has played the last 6 seasons in the AL Central, and had played for the Twins from 2000-2002. I think it would be a good fit.

Blake for 2 years with an option doesn't sound terrible.
I wouldn't mind 3 years of him.

I believe Beltre's contract ends after this season, so if they do trade prospects for him, they should look into seeing if he'd sign an extension with them, before they do the trade.
One 3B that could be available is MIke Lowell, as the BoSox seem to want to get rid of him so they could move Youkilis to 3B and be in the bidding for Teixeira.
I'm sure Andy LaRoche could be available too, and after his disastrous season, I'm sure he won't cost much to get.
Then there's Dallas McPherson from Florida. Maybe even Melvin Mora. Garrett Atkins, as had been previously mentioned. Scott Rolen as well.

Probably a bag of balls. Mora svcks defensively.

It would be great if we can sign Blake. I also believe that we should still trade for either J.J. Hardy or Yunel Escobar, depending on the Peavy situation. The Twins infield would then be set for the next few years.

I would take a platoon of Harris and Buscher instead of Blake. In the end the Harris and Buscher combination will put up similar numbers at 1/3 of the cost. See Aaron Gleeman's web page for data that backs me up.

If you're a Twins fan like me you should know what will happen when they inevitably sign Blake for too many years and too much money: he will disappoint. He won't hit 20 HR, wont have 100 RBI, he'll get hurt (he will be 35) and they'll have to go right back to Brian Buscher who did a fine job platooning with Brendan Harris for a fraction of the money. Will the Twins really want Blake when he's 36? 37? 38? no, no and no. Bu they'll sign him anyway and regret it, then have to buy him out or try and pawn him off on another team. The Twins are an organization that just can't afford to overpay for an average-fielding, average-hitting 35 year-old 3B.
