« Twins Rumors: Padres, Blake, Reyes | Main | Tigers Considering Alex Cora »
There are 27 Type A free agents. To receive two draft picks as compensation, the player's original team must offer arbitration. If the player turns down the offer and signs elsewhere, the original team gets the picks. If the player accepts the offer, the team is "stuck" with the player on a non-guaranteed one-year deal. Arbitration decisions are due December 1st.
Let's do a reader survey on whether arbitration will be offered for each Type A free agent. Click the checkbox next to any player you predict will be offered arbitration. Click here to take the survey, and here to view the results.

36% say Varitek will be offered arbitration? Do the other 64% really think Boston wont offer it? They want him back so theres no risk of offering it.

I think Fuentes was offered arbitration a month ago.
Posted by: mkorpal | November 26, 2008 at 05:42 PM
I think if the red sox wanted Varitek, the contract would have already been signed.

The Red Sox probably hope he accepts arbitration. They will obviously off him arbitration. The cubs would be stupid not to offer Wood arbitration. I really hope they offer it to Howry, the giants have been linked to him and theyre pick is protected so it shouldnt scare them off.

"I think if the red sox wanted Varitek, the contract would have already been signed."
Not really. Tek wants a multiyear deal, I think the Sox want no more than 1 year committed.

I don't think the Cubs offer Wood arbitration. He's too likely to accept (although I don't think he does)
I really don't think the Cubs will have payroll room for Wood, especially since they're going after Ibanez/Abreu/etc.

On Nov 13 Dan O'Dowd said he would offer Fuentes arb, but I don't think he actually did it yet.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | November 26, 2008 at 06:04 PM
He wouldnt accept. Im sure he has respect for the organization and understand the payroll situation. The only positive of him leaving is the 2 picks. And if he does accept we get Wood for one year and what 7 million? He wont accept, he will get 2 or 3 years elsewhere.

Tim, I'd actually be surprised if the Yankees don't offer Mussina arbitration.
When Clemens retired in 2003, the Yankees didn't offer arbitration and then later regretted it when he changed his mind and signed with Houston.
Of course, the rules were different then, and if you didn't offer arbitration you couldn't resign the player until May, so that may have been the reason they were upset.

Will the Cubs offer arb to Howry?
Posted by: kdub | November 26, 2008 at 06:28 PM
I hope the Cubs offer Wood arbitration AND he accepts.

Wow a lot of people voted for Manny. But not all of them. Which is odd considering it was part of the agreement. Dodgers decline the options on his contract and he doesn't take the Arbitration.
Funny is so many people think that the Red Sox would offer arbitration to a guy who made $10 mil last year. That normally means the player will make MORE. Think the Sox want to pay 'Tek $10+ mil next year? You think the Red Sox want a $12 million catcher hitting .225?
Do people understand the process? It means the majority of players would make more money.
Posted by: XD23 | November 26, 2008 at 06:53 PM
Manny really shouldn't be on the list either. It was reported that when the Red Sox trade was made, the Dodgers insisted on a clause where they would offer him arbitration and he would automatically decline.
So unless he signs with them before the deadline, they're going to offer it.

I'm trying to think why some of these guys wouldn't be offered arbitration.. You can be 100% certain that Sabathia, Teixeira, K-Rod, Burnett and a few of the other big guys are going to decline. My only guess on why someone wouldn't put Tex on that list is because they think he might sign a deal for the arbitration deadline, maybe? Seems like a stretch considering Dec. 1 is right around the corner..

Maybe it was a "gentleman's agreement" with manny regarding not being offered arbitration and nothing in writing. We know he dogged it and sat on his duff the last month in Boston with the injury before going to LA and then getting healthy overnight and it would maybe cost many and boras some $$$.
Posted by: johns | November 26, 2008 at 07:15 PM
of course the Sox will often Tek arbitration.
They want him back on a one year deal, that would be their dream.
He would have probably signed already had Boras not been a idiot and said Posada deal.

Varitek = a 1 year $12M deal for a 220 hitter not named Andruw Jones. ROFLMAO!
