« Astros Sign Jason Michaels | Main | Red Sox-Teixeira Rumor »
A TMZ cameraman caught Barry Bonds outside an L.A. restaurant recently, and got Bonds to say, "I'm not retiring" a few times. It's really not much of a story.

Does anyone know what TMZ stands for?
Posted by: basicslop | December 15, 2008 at 12:18 PM
When Bonds' charges all get dropped, I can't wait for someone to sign him.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 15, 2008 at 12:20 PM
Like a Japanese team, eh?
Posted by: Ink&Paper | December 15, 2008 at 12:21 PM
It's sad that nobody will sign him though.
"Does anyone know what TMZ stands for?"
It's a celebrity site. Pretty much, they stalk/follow famous people and post stuff.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 15, 2008 at 12:21 PM
He has little chance of every playing again, and even less of a chance to make the Hall Of Fame.
Posted by: kerelcooper | December 15, 2008 at 12:22 PM
He will DH for the rays at the minimum and win world series mvp.
Posted by: walkoffblast | December 15, 2008 at 12:22 PM

Posted by: 100backeduptrucks | December 15, 2008 at 12:25 PM
Yeah I get what TMZ is. Just never understood A) why people watch the show and B) what it stands for.
Am I missing something on this 30 Mile Zone thing?
Posted by: basicslop | December 15, 2008 at 12:27 PM
Doesn't his trial begin this spring?

Posted by: 100backeduptrucks | December 15, 2008 at 12:25 PM
The story is posted on ESPN.com. I assume that's where he got it. I read it there a few minutes before I saw it here.
Posted by: cmac1973 | December 15, 2008 at 12:29 PM
Is there a real difference between espn and tmz these days?
Posted by: walkoffblast | December 15, 2008 at 12:31 PM
Bonds hitting in front of Manny...........
Scary thought if Bonds has anything left.
That'd be pretty sick for the Giants lineup no?
Posted by: rrbass27 | December 15, 2008 at 12:33 PM
Speaking of steroid trials, what's the latest on Clemens?? Dropped completely out of site, eh?
Posted by: el clash combo | December 15, 2008 at 12:33 PM
cmac-i was just messing with tim, i'm bored to tears. (and the only stuff i read on espn is stuff tim links to anyway)

uh, yeah there is a difference between espn and tmz walkoffblast. espn used to be solid.
Posted by: downsideup | December 15, 2008 at 12:38 PM
it's really, really stupid that someone won't sign him to DH, or just platoon at DH/ left field, for the league minimum. i'm sure he's still better than the league average, and for the base salary, it makes no sense not to sign him-- not when every other juicer got off the hook. and doesn't it look like the case against him is finally going to be thrown out?
sign him already!
Posted by: lrs77 | December 15, 2008 at 12:41 PM
Barry, please come back, if only, to piss off all the haters!
Posted by: nostocksjustbonds | December 15, 2008 at 12:43 PM
Yeah, I agree.
Houston could have signed him last year when El Caballo got hurt. He is definitely a better bat than Geoff Blum, so they could have kept Wigginton at third last year. Anybody can play Left field in Houston with a little practice.

Bonds isn't playing for any MLB team until it is proven that he DIDN'T take steroids and lie to a grand jury...
In other words, he has played his last MLB game.
Posted by: Ksy92003 | December 15, 2008 at 12:52 PM
Whether Bonds would be better than XXXXX player is obviously not the issue here. Nobody will sign him. It was proven last year and there is no reason that someone will suddenly change their minds after an entire year off at his age without PED's.
Posted by: Teetz1 | December 15, 2008 at 12:56 PM
Maybe when he said "retiring" he just meant "going to bed"
Posted by: jumanjifan01 | December 15, 2008 at 12:58 PM
If the white sox had a vacancy in left field and bonds would sign for a REASONABLE price, I would jump out of my shoes to get him. He's no slower to the ball than Carlos Lee and he couldn't make worse angles to ball like Podsednik made. Either, way it's not gonna happen.
Posted by: whitesoxfan424 | December 15, 2008 at 01:00 PM
Just makes him look worse, no one will sign him.
Posted by: NedCollettiClueless | December 15, 2008 at 01:06 PM
Although Bonds is my favorite player, sometimes I wish that Sammy Sosa broke the home run record instead, just to see no one bitch about it and so he could just live a normal life like the hundreds of other players involved in the steroid scandal. If you dislike Bonds his character I understand, but the constant painting of Bonds ruining baseball while Sosa and Big Mac lay back in all their scot-free glory is unfair. Guilty or not either pick on every single steroid guy, or leave them all alone, just because Bonds and Clemens were the best just shows that they were superior athletes all along, cus lets face it no one is accusing either of them for doing steroids their entire careers...
Posted by: Giant Deric | December 15, 2008 at 01:17 PM
You don't have to quite - you're fired!
Posted by: rememberthecoop | December 15, 2008 at 01:27 PM
Bonds is Dusty's Boy...Bring him to Cincy! hahaha
Posted by: cincy_11 | December 15, 2008 at 01:33 PM
I couldn't agree more, Giant Deric. I can understand people disliking all juicers, but if they're singling out Bonds just because he was better than the rest of them, that's pretty ridiculous. It's also strange to me that certain players--two NL second basemen who either retired recently or could this year come to mind--get a pass as if just because they were mentioned in the Mitchell Report, they're not suspect.
If people do want to single out one group of players to get upset about, how about the guys who wouldn't have been on a roster without steroids and therefore took a spot from someone who wasn't using? It's not like Bonds wasn't a Hall of Famer before he bulked up.
And if your argument is that Bonds is a special case since he's a jerk plus he's linked to steroids, why can Gary Sheffield still get work?

"Bonds hitting in front of Manny...........

What is scary about that is the defense in the outfield. Mark Grace could come down from the booth and turn a double into an inside the parker!
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 15, 2008 at 02:09 PM
while still smoking a cig.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 15, 2008 at 02:09 PM
Yeah, the bottom line is Barry is a prick of a person but MLB scapegoated the entire steriod era on him somehow. This makes very little sense because by almost all accounts what barry did was a reaction to the rampant use. In a way the uber-beast he became is what ended the era. Seems to me he had a much greater impact in ending the era than creating it. Once giambi signs a 10 mil or more deal this offseason bonds has a nice amount to sue the owners for. You can argue about the case for this year but I doubt they want to set a precedent claiming they do not want players on their teams with pending trials.
Posted by: walkoffblast | December 15, 2008 at 02:17 PM
What the problem is that Barry still wants to play and thats OK--so does Kenny Lofton, but here are the issues.
1. Possible lenghty trial on federal charges.
2. Will be 45 half way thru 2009 season.
3. Chronic knee problems.
Now the players union is saying there is collusion amongst the owners to keep Barry from playing, who the HELL are they that they can dictate what free agents wil and wont be signed???? Did the union file a complaint for Lofton,Raffy any other superstar that was forced into retirement. If Barry in convicted he should be put in the same cell as O.J. and experience a different kind of juice. Barry just dont pick up the soap.
Posted by: ryno23 | December 15, 2008 at 02:33 PM
The thing I don't get about Bonds using steroids:
You had a Hall of Fame career lined up before you started using 'roids. Why even start? Why jeopardize your future with the game?

"Now the players union is saying there is collusion amongst the owners to keep Barry from playing, who the HELL are they that they can dictate what free agents wil and wont be signed???? Did the union file a complaint for Lofton,Raffy any other superstar that was forced into retirement."
I don't think you understand the purpose of the players union.

"When Bonds' charges all get dropped, I can't wait for someone to sign him."
Agreed? What is with all the absolute bone heads who want Bonds and Manny to leave baseball? If that is the case, why don't you just go follow highschool baseball? 2 of the best hitters in the history of the world and people don't want to see them play. I also see a couple of posts above mine somebody compared Barry Bonds to Kenny Lofton. Very, very intelligent stuff.

"Is there a real difference between espn and tmz these days?"
Good point. All ESPN does is try to stir up trouble. See... Dallas Cowboys. On the ESPN bottom line last night, they actually showed the number of targets for T.O. and for Jason Witten. Seriously? And they showed a highlight of T.O. "dropping" a pass that nobody else on Dallas would have even be able to reach, let alone catch. They make it sound like T.O. took one off his chest and is some bum receiver. Ball barely even reached touched his fingertips. Sorry to bring up football, but the real point is that ESPN is quickly turning into a joke. No surprise a member of their staff even works on a soap opera.
Posted by: nrmax88 | December 15, 2008 at 02:56 PM
If i was a GM, I would sign him. Hes a better player to have on a team than a Manny. They both are below average fielders at this point in their careers but both can hit. Bonds would also require a lot less money and a much shorter commitment. And the media circus surrounding both of them would be about the same. Bonds won't quit playing though so he is much better than Manny.
Posted by: celtics464 | December 15, 2008 at 02:58 PM
On top of that, I'm sure Bonds feels he has something to prove if he was signed.
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | December 15, 2008 at 02:59 PM
Considering how many teams get below-avg production from their DHs someone should sign Bonds at the league minimum.
Posted by: Will Smiff | December 15, 2008 at 03:14 PM
baseballismylyf4, not to excuse it, but what happened was he was starting to get overshadowed by guys with much less talent, and he knew exactly why they were starting to pull ahead of him and decided to join in.
And ryno23, very classy to wish rape on someone for possible steroid use!
Posted by: jaywest05 | December 15, 2008 at 04:09 PM
"What the problem is that Barry still wants to play and thats OK--so does Kenny Lofton, but here are the issues."
Bonds actually still can hit and be a serviceable MLB player. Lofton can't.
Huge difference. LOL @ your stupid comparison.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 15, 2008 at 04:49 PM
@ some people who commented on the Lofton/Bonds "comparison"...
Well, there was no comparison. The thing he was saying is that both want to come back, and can't. That's how they are comparable.
@ the people who keep mentioning "league minimum"
Do you guys really think the most arrogant player in recent memory will take league minimum?
Posted by: baseballismylyf4 | December 15, 2008 at 05:04 PM
"@ the people who keep mentioning "league minimum"

he has already stated he'd play for the league minimum. so, yes, i do.

How amazing would it be if the Pirates signed him? What do the Pirates have to lose? Let him start and end his career here in Pittsburgh, the media circus might be good for the team, ESPN would be forced to talk about a city other than NY or Boston in one of their baseball tonight segments. Does Steve Phillips even know where to find Pittsburgh on a map?
Posted by: kett08 | December 15, 2008 at 06:37 PM
"How amazing would it be if the Pirates signed him? What do the Pirates have to lose? Let him start and end his career here in Pittsburgh,"
Yes, yes, yes.
Pittsburgh, Oakland (yes, Cust in the field is bad, but its Barry Lamar Bonds guys), or Tampa Bay are my three preferred teams for Bonds.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 15, 2008 at 06:49 PM
"Is there a real difference between espn and tmz these days?"
Tom Brady said it best recently "ESPN is to sports highlights what MTV is to music videos" or something along those lines
Posted by: leftcoastbias | December 15, 2008 at 06:53 PM
First off I apologise bout the Bonds/O.J. comment.
But now lets compare some recent players not signed after decent careers. This the last season played
The stats posted are
HR/RBI/R/BA/G
Bonds
28/66/74/.276 126
Sosa
21/92/53/.252 114
Lofton
7/38/63/ .303 136
Raffy
18/60/47/.266 110
Now I agree Loftons stats are nnot impressive except the 300 avg. Sosa had good production in his last season but the MLBPA doesnt coem to hos defense.
Can Bonds help a team?? Maybe, at 44 with bad knees it is a risk. But we cannot allow the union to dictate to teams who they can sign.
