Brewers Offer Arb To Sabathia, Sheets, Shouse

According to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, the Brewers offered arbitration to C.C. Sabathia (Type A), Ben Sheets (Type A), and Brian Shouse (Type B).  They declined to offer arb to Eric Gagne (Type B).

Sheets and Shouse were the question marks.  The Brewers apparently don't mind getting Shouse back on a one-year deal, though he seeks two years.  Sheets also seems likely to decline and pursue multiple years.  If he declines and signs elsewhere, his new team will lose a draft pick to the Brewers.  Ken Davidoff wonders if Sheets might accept the offer.

damn, brew crew should get some good prospects from these guys

I have a general baseball question...What happens if a team signs two Type A Free Agents? They'd already have given their first round pick to the first team, what pick would the second team get?

Won't Sheets cost a team two draft picks since he's a Type A free agent?

Hopefully some singing will start to happend

"What happens if a team signs two Type A Free Agents? They'd already have given their first round pick to the first team, what pick would the second team get?"

I'll just use the Yankees as an example since they're linked to basically every pithcer.

Let's say the Yankees sign Sabathia and A.J. Burnett. Because Sabathia has a higher Elias ranking than Burnett, the Brewers would get the Yankees first round pick and a pick between the first and second round. The Blue Jays would get the Yankees second round pick and a pick between the first and second round.

No. Teams only have to surrender one draft pick (either first or second depending on record) for a type A free agent. Type B free agents get a compensation pick between the first and second round.

Signing a type A costs a team one pick. If you lose a type A or type B, an additional pick is created for you in between the first and second rounds.

If you sign two Type A free agents, you lose your first and second round picks. The first round pick goes to whichever team had the higher ranked player.

If your first round pick fell within the top 15 picks, you keep it and give out your 2nd round pick instead.

Also you don't lose you pick from the previous year if for some reason the team couldn't sign him. Like the Yanks who have 2 first round picks this year, but only can lose one.

The Brewers have drafted and developed with solid results over the past few years... This could get scary. Possibly 3 picks in the first round and 3 sandwich picks?!?! And that is on top of a farm system that is already good.

Yeah, but we lost the brains of our drafting operation when Jack Z left to be GM at Seattle. I remain optimistic that we can still get some decent picks.

I really don't understand why Burnett is getting so much attention rather than Sheets. Didn't Burnett post like a 4.97 ERA? Who cares if he posted alot of strike outs. Burnett will definately do more harm than good to any team that signs him by the ERA issues and he is a type a free agent. Sheets was a killer to the cubs last year and he will continue to be a killer to what ever rival he has when healthy

Yep, that is how Boston raked in on the 2005 draft by letting Lowe, Martinez and Damon go and getting 5 1st round/sandwich picks in the deal and turned those into Clay Bucholz, Michael Bowden, Eric hansen, Jed Lowrie and Craig Hansen. So it never hurts to lose some stars to get the picks a few years down the line IF you scout well :-)

Burnett had a 4.07 ERA-sorry.
