« Jake Peavy Rumors: Wednesday | Main | Ben Sheets Rumors: Wednesday »
9:00pm: Tom Haudricourt has an update. Nothing came of Doug Melvin's talks with the Rangers, and he denied talking to the Giants or Mariners.
The Brewers haven't made an offer yet to Randy Johnson, who seems to prefer the West Coast. Melvin says he won't pursue Hoffman. And, some of the $100MM offered to Sabathia is available for pitching.
5:06pm: MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan says Melvin spoke to the Rangers about pitching. Melvin is said to hold Kevin Millwood in high regard.
3:27pm: Danny Knobler heard from two sources that Brewers GM Doug Melvin can't shift any of the $100MM offered to C.C. Sabathia to players, and the Brewers are "very unlikely" to pursue a closer (this despite meetings with closers that are known to have taken place).
1:51pm: This information has all pretty much surfaced prior to today, but let's put it all in one place. The Brewers are considering Brian Fuentes and Trevor Hoffman as closer options, with Randy Johnson a rotation option.

Trevor Hoffman makes a lot of sense for the Brewers.
Maybe they can sign him after they trade Mike Cameron to the Yankees for Melky Cabrera & Ian Kennedy? Mike & C.C. are going to tear that city up!
I also like a Randy Johnson signing for Milwaukee.

Yankees wouldn't trade Kennedy and Cabrera for Cameron
Posted by: metzfan22 | December 10, 2008 at 03:32 PM
i wouldnt like randy johnson coming. as much as i like him as a player and a future HOF, i think hes wayyyyyyyy to old for the brewers roster. i think the brewers will offer fuentes a contract, however there is a lot of teams going for him right now.
Posted by: brewers19101 | December 10, 2008 at 03:40 PM
I doubt they would even give up Kennedy, Cabrera seems fair though.
Posted by: chicubs25 | December 10, 2008 at 03:42 PM
Agree that the Yankees will not give us Kennedy and Cabrera for Cameron.
Trade Cameron and Hall to the Yankees for Cabrera and prospect
Sign Randy Johnson
I think the Brewers should solve their closer role internally with McClung.
Sign a relief pitcher but not a closer
1b fielder
2b weeks
ss escobar
3b lamb
lf braun
cf cabrera
rf hart
yovanni
sp via trade
johnson
suppan
parra
bush in bullpen

What the HELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Can't shift any of the $100M? Come on. You have to be kidding me right?
So we will just sit back and see every other team get better and us get worse. Good idea

If that's true, and I take it with a grain of salt since 90% of these rumors are debunked, then the Brewers are done. Their run lasted all of two years. Poorly managed on Melvin's part, they had a solid nucleus two years ago and he made some bad choices.

Craig, where is Hardy?
Posted by: metzfan22 | December 10, 2008 at 03:58 PM
sign hoffman to a 1 year, 5 million dollar deal
-take a shot at fuentes too, but hes not worth the price plus pick
sign randy johnson to a 1 year, 5 or 6 million dollar deal, (hes going to get 300 wins this year, imangine the fans he would bring in!!!!)
trade cameron for just ian kennedy, who cares about melky.
Posted by: glover28 | December 10, 2008 at 04:01 PM
the brewers are not gonna trade cameron for melky. cameron is way too good to be traded for cabrera. mikes a faster runner, better fielder, better power hitter, and better everything, except for his BA which was .243, and melkys was .249, not much of a difference. if this trade goes on, youll see the brewers getting more players then the yanks.

Wow, that's harsh.
Subtract Sabathia, Sheets, Torres, Mota, Shouse and Gagne (and Turnbow if that counts).
Add Jorge Julio and Lamb.
Ouch.

Hey, look on the bright side - you might could get Millwood!
(Sorry, that was a low blow)

yes! rangers move payroll, maybe pick up a midlevel prospect i assume - free up some cash for sheets.
its coming full circle.

Deal Millwood to Mil..
Then sign Sheets? If not, stick with the young guys and see what happens?
I am not entirely sure what Texas is doing here.
I guess it depends on the return from Mil.

Andruw Jones or Juan Pierre for Kevin Millwood?
Posted by: dusto | December 10, 2008 at 05:18 PM
Hardy would be traded and we would get a quality young SP.
Posted by: craig | December 10, 2008 at 05:31 PM
sign randy johnson to a 1 year, 5 or 6 million dollar deal
if he would come that cheap he would be back in arizona, and if did some how sign for that cheap, it would be the biggest bargain of the offseason

Hardy possible trade destinations
Hardy and Dillard to Detroit for Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis? May we need to offer more? Thoughts?
Hardy to Minnesota for Slowey or Blackburn?
Hardy to LAD for Kershaw?
or go the other route and trade Fielder, however I believe it would be more difficult to trade him. We would need a quality 1B in return and just swapping that doesn't make sense.
We should trade Hardy for starting pitching
Pretty obvious our 3B problem is going to be solved within. Weeks will remain at second and Escobar needs to be in the Majors. So, trade JJ.

I actually wouldn't mind Millwood.
It's pretty clear 2009 will be a rebuilding year to some degree for the Brewers.
I would definitely be open to dealing Fielder this offseason, but I'd keep Hardy for one more year. Escobar is not ready IMO.
If I could get Brandon Morrow for Fielder straight up, I pull the trigger immediately. Not sure how realistic that is though.
As far as your trades, Craig, no thanks on Miguel's fat @ss and fat contract. Nice player, but no thanks......and your offer is way low.
Hardy for Slowey? Maybe. Blackburn? No chance as far as I'm concerned.
Kershaw? Yes, please...of course Coletti hangs up before you can finish the word "Kershaw".

Good one Doug Melvin. Way to go! Won't use most of the $ to improve the team. Hmmm, sounds pretty good to me, NOT!
Come on! Putz may be traded, Wood signed elsewhere, and KRod signed. Why not use McClung as the closer.
One other thing Doug, What happened to addressing the need for more left handed bat help? We need a SP, LH Bat, and reliever in my opinion. Get something done here before all who is left is Jason Jennings or Mark Prior.

My thoughts...
Lets stick with the young guys. Maybe a Randy Johnson or John Smotz might not be a bad Idea to help mentor some of these kids. I thinks its obvious that without Sheets, CC, Camron, etc were not going to compete in the central. We have a world of talent in the Minors, lets give some of these guys a shot. Look at what the Rays and Marlins have been able to do.
Jeremy Jeffress could be a great SP, Nic Ungs had an awsome time in Huntsville, Tim Dillard is a Major league pitcher, David Welch from AA. not to mention the bats, we all know about Escobar and Gamel. How about Cole Gillespie (he was putting up better numbers than LaPorta), or Garciaparra at 1b, Taylor Green could be a huge Left Handed bat some day and he plays 3B a position we need.
I think we need to build a new young team around Braun, Para, and Gallardo. Maybe hold on to Hart Possibly Fielder (needs to lose some wait though). But lets unload some of these other guys. We've proved that we can raise our own talent lets give it a few more years and make another serious run.

Hopefully the deal goes through where we will end up with melky and if were lucky maybe ian. But saying melky is not a good tradeback for cameron is ridiculous. Cameron is getting old, and is a strikeout machine. Melky is still young, hes a switch hitter, which were dying for a left handed bat right now. This would be a perfect trade. Sure were not gonna have a year like we had last year. But hopefully prince has a big year, his trade value goes up, and we get some good players for him. Then next year, move gamel to first, hopefully jeffries is ready. and were back in the playoffs.
