Cardinals Reliever Rumors

5:57pm: K-Rod's agent Paul Kinzer said the Cardinals did not offer his client a similar contract.

9:08am: According to Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals made a bid for Francisco Rodriguez in the neighborhood of the Mets' successful three-year, $37MM bid.  The search continues.  Strauss says the Cards plan to explore trades before escalating talks with Brian Fuentes.  Potential trade targets: J.J. Putz, Matt Capps, and Jon Rauch.  Talks for Jose Valverde "stalled abruptly earlier in the week."  The trade bait will probably be on of the Cardinals' outfielders.

Strauss adds that GM John Mozeliak met with Scott Boras yesterday, possibly to discuss Oliver Perez.

maybe the jays and cards could match up...Bj ryan and scott downs to cards for im not really sure what would go to the jays

Glad we didn't get him, would rather have someone like Putz...

Is Rafael Soriano for Ankiel fair? I believe both are only signed for 2009. Maybe the Braves would have to throw someone else in?

Soriano for Ankiel does give the Braves a bat, but they want a RH, and the second problem is I'm not sure you guys would want to eat 6.1 million in salary...That would free up that much more for us to sign AJ and another pitcher...

I forgot that he's a lefty. We definitely need a righty. But I think if the Cards were prepared to offer KRod $30+ they'd be okay with $6, especially if they dumped Ankiel's salary.

I still think Jermaine Dye is the best fit for the Braves.

Also, the Cards aren't going to have a problem paying a closer if they think he will do the job.

I'm still very surprised to hear that they bid on K-Rod though. I still think Wood on a 2 year deal would make the most sense for them...but apparently they don't feel the same way.

Signing K-Rod would have been a very un-cardinal like move.

I am also very suprised by the cardinals making a bid at K-rod. He is not the kind of uy the cardinals would usually sign. I think that Kerry Wood is getting way to much money if Cleveland gives him 2years $20 million. I would like to see the cardinals go get a Brandon Lyon or Brian Fuentes and we could use an outfielder to trade and upgrade 2nd base or the rotation

Talks for Jose Valverde "stalled abruptly earlier in the week."

Obviously. Why would Houston send an 'elite' closer to a division rival?
