« Rosenthal's Latest: Yankees, Teixeira, Bradley, Furcal | Main | Odds and Ends: Nelson, Atkins, Taveras »
According to La Velle E. Neal III of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, the Indians, Giants, Pirates, and Reds have expressed interest in new free agent Ty Wigginton. Dejan Kovacevic confirms Pittsburgh's interest. Neal says the Twins have admired Wiggy for years as well. He adds that Wigginton was nearly dealt to the Giants before being non-tendered. Ken Davidoff thinks the Mets should look into it.
What will it take to sign Wigginton? Casey Blake's three-year, $17.5MM deal might be optimistic, but Neal figures Wigginton could get a similar average annual salary. Still might take two years to sign Wigginton though. Beyond Joe Crede, there's not much else out there for third base.

go on and do it GIANTS..get a 31 year old power hitter..it couldn't hurt..
Posted by: squigg510 | December 14, 2008 at 06:23 PM
Let's go Buccos get him. If they can get him that would sure up our infield situation for next year and we can get a 4th outfielder or hopefully that power bat Huntington has been talking about getting.
Posted by: BucSox | December 14, 2008 at 06:28 PM
I wish the Mets would go after him. We loved him when he was here a few years ago. He would be able to give Delgado and Wright days off every once in a while (God knows Wright would appreciate it!), and I think I would rather see him at second than Castillo.
Posted by: Matt S | December 14, 2008 at 06:28 PM
Why would Wigginton take a utility spot with the Mets when he could be an above average starting 3B elsewhere?
And I will use this as another opportunity to bash Drayton McLane. You suck Drayton!

If the Twins don't go out of their way to make sure they're the ones to sign him, I'm going to be a bit... angry...
Posted by: Deviation | December 14, 2008 at 06:33 PM
I want the tribe to make this happen.
Posted by: kjhill42 | December 14, 2008 at 06:38 PM

Posted by: jhawk90 | December 14, 2008 at 06:45 PM
I hope ty will accept a offer because givng wright delgado and maybe even reyes a break at ss.
In the arizona fall league Daniel Murphy played 2b and hit .397.
I doubt castillo is gone even though I really want the 6 million of the payroll.

the Giants need to be in on Wiggington. He plays a decent third, would be relatively cheap(as in versus losing prospects &/or draft picks) and has better career and 2008 offensive numbers than every proven hitter on the Giants roster (sad isn't it that a non-tendered player could potentially be the Giants cleanup hitter). This would also allow Sandoval to play first where he would be better defensively and platoon with Ishikawa, Molina, and Wiggy. Check out www.Nuschlersnews@blogspot.com for a breakdown in all the realistic 3B options for the Giants.

Adam
If ty wants to win he can come to the mets.
Twins are going nowhere.
Posted by: beastOftheEast | December 14, 2008 at 06:48 PM
Adam, Agreed.
As much as I'd like to see Wigginton on the Mets again, he can do better elsewheres, and will do better elsewheres.
Posted by: AdropOFvenom | December 14, 2008 at 06:55 PM
Twins will probably win the A.L. Central and the mets will buckle again, then come short of the playoffs again.
Posted by: wisbrave | December 14, 2008 at 06:59 PM
Tim, if the Reds signed Wiggington would he play the outfield, or would Encarnacion (where many ppl believe he belong) be moved to the outfield?
Posted by: GmblngPtchr20 | December 14, 2008 at 06:59 PM
Wiggington giving Reyes a day off, that would be a laugher. Reminds me of back in the day when I wanted to get a couple of cheap steals in MVP Baseball on the PS2, I'd stick Jeff Bagwell behind the plate.

WJ's statement said that they would be looking at Wiggington as a plan B for LF. In response to EE in LF, he said "why fix what is not broken". So, in response, no. Edwin will not got to LF. It will by Ty out there.

"Adam

Are these the same Twins that finished 1 game out of the playoffs last year? Believe it or not, but there are teams that have potential to make the playoffs besides the Mets, who are hardly a guarantee to make it to begin with. Strange concept, right?
Posted by: Adam H. | December 14, 2008 at 07:14 PM
Reds probly have enough money to go Taveras and Burrell or Wigs, Taveras, and Jerry Hairston. If one of these scenarios plays out, they will at least be able to fill out a lineup card with legitimate major leaguers until the injury bug strikes next year. C-Hernandez, 1B-Votto, 2B-Phillips, SS-Gonzo(hopefully healthy), 3B-Encarnacion, LF-Wigs, CF-Taveras, RF-Bruce. Not perfect, but with their staff they should have a legitimate shot at 85+ wins.

If the Giants could sign Wigginton and the Unit, they would be lookin pretty good in a weak NL West...
Posted by: wildabeast4 | December 14, 2008 at 07:20 PM
the mets should deffinitely not look into wigginton he is bum he was a bum in new york before
Posted by: Rec10 | December 14, 2008 at 07:20 PM
The Twins are only going to be loads better with all the young talent, young pitching, and of course Mauer and Morneau ...
I predict them to win the division and contend, not "go nowhere".

Wiggy is too young for the Giants...
Posted by: MikeClarke | December 14, 2008 at 07:39 PM
Although Wiggy, the Unit, and Renteria is a better off season then...
Blake, Loretta, and maybe Jack Wilson...
So the Giants could emerge as one of the NL West favorites...

on't forget Affeldt and Howry...those were important additions. Giants lost a lot of games because of a struggling bullpen.

I would like this signing for the Twins

"Wiggy is too young for the Giants..."
What is with people always complaining about the Giants age? They used to be old. They aren't old anymore. get over it.
Zito - 30
Lincecum - 24
Cain - 24
Lowry - 28
Sanchez - 26
Average - 26.4 years old
Winn - 34
Rowand - 31
Lewis - 27
Sandoval - 22
Renteria - 33
Burriss - 23
Ishikawa - 25
Molina - 34
Average - 28.6 years old

are you serious? u really think the dodgers willnot get a SS(sounds like furcal wants to be a dodger more than ever) and manny? really, whose going to sign manny?
lets say the angels resign tex. here are the other suitors for tex that could enter the bidding
1. red sox-he will never go back and they dont want him
2. nats- are at least 3-4 years away, and no one, espically in the nl, will give manny a 5yr+ deal
yankees-there is no way the yanks are going to want to deal with manny. besides they have damon, matsui, gardner, nady and melky for the outfield already. they are looking to trade melky for cameron, so itd be a OF/DH with cameron, damon, nady, matsui. they have no place for manny.
besides all this, the dodgers are going to get a least 1 SP also, ther is no way colletti can say hes responsible with a rotation of bills(broken leg), kuroda, kershaw and a mix of mcdonald, schmidt, and elbert.

"If ty wants to win he can come to the mets.

Yeah, the Twins have nothing going for them. Terrible rotation and absolutely no talented position players... bunch of stiffs.
Anyway, back to reality, I think the Indians spent a lot of their money on Wood, and the Mets just don't have as much of a need as Minnesota or San Francisco.
Giants and Twins are probably the two most logical landing places. Let's just hope Wigginton misses the AL...
I really don't see Minnesota winning a bidding war against the Giants.
Posted by: MorneauVP | December 14, 2008 at 09:28 PM
If the Yankees want Manny, they'll go after him and find a spot for him. Any team with money and looking to upgrade offensively "has room" for Manny. He's one of the best hitters in baseball.
If the Yankees decide they want a bat, they can sign Manny and trade some of the other options.
While it can be annoying as a fan of a smaller-market team, there's no one the Yankees "don't have room for." Especially not one of the best hitters of our generation who probably would love to stick it to Boston.
Posted by: MorneauVP | December 14, 2008 at 09:33 PM
If the Twins let this probable best 3rd baseman available on the market (if Beltre is not available) get away when they had it dropped right into their laps, then they deserve to lose the AL central next season.
He has power they need and hits well to protect Morneau and Maur and would be a perfect fit in between them.
If the twins get cheap regarding him, Twins fans should rightly go into an uproar.
Posted by: johns | December 14, 2008 at 09:46 PM
Wigginton or Crede would be fine, although i'd prefer Crede for defense and power reasons.
Posted by: kuyote | December 14, 2008 at 10:28 PM
"If the twins get cheap regarding him, Twins fans should rightly go into an uproar."
Yep. Something tells me that they won't sign him either. I just don't get it.
Posted by: BadEnoughDude | December 14, 2008 at 10:46 PM
Crede + Turf = Bad news... no way he stays healthy in Minnesota.
He'll put up a better all-around year than Crede will coming off all of his injuries.
Posted by: MorneauVP | December 14, 2008 at 10:58 PM
something tells me the twins WILL sign him. they have the most financial flexibility of any team interested, and could go as high as 7 or 8 million a year (they still need to save money for a possible bullpen arm). they have been interested in him before, and have dubbed him a "twins sort of player". why wouldn't they be in on him? i think it gets done within the next couple of days. 2 years, 14 mil. and that's not an overbid, casey blake just got close to 6 million.
Posted by: minnesotawins | December 14, 2008 at 11:10 PM
"...and the last time the Twins outbid another team for a free agent was..."
Sigh, Punto by 3 mil per year. We spend all our FA money on one bum and now a good FA is on the market
Posted by: Twins GM | December 14, 2008 at 11:55 PM
I don't see the Bucs going there again. They have options now and more options on the way. I could see them spending some money on a starting pitcher or two.
Posted by: indybucfan | December 15, 2008 at 07:35 AM
pretty sad that Ed Wade couldnt trade him for a bag a baseballs and then got non-tendered. Seeing as the Astros don't have any money to get another 3b they probably should have buckled and gave him the 7-9 mill he would have made in arb. Honestly what was the knucklehead Wade thinking
Posted by: AstrosCoverage.blogspot.com | December 15, 2008 at 09:47 AM
Ain't it the truth Twins_GM, ain't it the truth.
By my estimate they're still 10-12 mil under the '07 payroll, they got the cash w/o even raiding the owner's piggy bank. Just once it'd be nice to see a signing like this go down.
Posted by: jhawk90 | December 15, 2008 at 12:02 PM
He plays 3b, 2b, 1b and LF, right? Frank Wren should take a look. That's pretty good production for likely a cheap salary. He can sub for Chipper once a week.
Posted by: daslied | December 15, 2008 at 02:39 PM
Lets go get em Frank Wren!!
