« A.J. Burnett Rumors: Thursday | Main | Mark Sweeney May Retire »
According to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick, Angels pitched Jon Garland "is leaning toward declining the Angels' salary arbitration offer by Sunday's deadline." Garland believes he can get more on the open market, according to Crasnick's source. If Garland leaves, the Angels will receive a supplemental draft pick.
There are two sides to the Garland debate. His detractors will point to his ugly ERA, FIP, and strikeout rate. His fans will talk about durability, double digit wins, and eating innings in the American League.

His supporting numbers are worrisome, but I think on the right deal he'd be a good fit for the NL. Could see the Cardinals getting in on him.

He stinks.

"He stinks."
Give that man a cigar..
Really, he is better than many 4 and 5 starters on teams, but how many teams pay 4 and 5 starters 10+ million? I can think of the Cubs, how many others?

There are two sides to every argument, but in Garlands case there is only one right answer.
"He stinks."
Yup.

I agree with CubbyFan23. If I were the GM of an NL team, I would definitely make him an offer. IMO, he'd be a good 3 or maybe even 2 in the Senior Circuit.

He's 200 innings of averageness. He doesn't stink.
He's Tim Wakefield for triple the cost.

Seven straight years of 190 IP, ERAs of...
4.58
4.51
4.89
3.50
4.51
4.23
4.90
Hardly think that's a bad player to pick up when all of those innings were in the AL. I think he could pitch with a 4.40-4.50 ERA in the NL which would make him a decent option.

It's all about perception too. 200 innings of averageness could be considered a good thing. This guys going to get pair probably $10-12 mil per year to give you 200 innings of average pitching. Yet you look at a guy like Jason Marquis, who pretty much defines 'average', yet the Cubs can't give him away at a $9 mil salary and only a 1-year commitment.

200 innings of stink.

According to ESPN he made $12 million in 2008. So he'd get about $13 mil in Arbitration at least. So if he thinks he can do better it has to be a $14 mil a year thing for a few years.
Pass.

Garland is Javier Vazquez without the strikeouts. Overpaid but eats innings.
I think a move to the senior circut could benefit him a little, but not much because he is still pretty lousy.
My guess is he accepts the arbitration after coming to his senses that he isn't that good and isn't worth what he is making now by a long shot.

For arguements sake, let's say if Garland had to face Jack Cust, Mark Reynolds and Ryan Howard all in the same inning...I'd be more than willing to bet my fat salary he couldn't strike any of them out!

True he probably wouldn't strike any of them out but he is a ground ball pitcher and all 3 batters are pretty slow so he would probably set them down in a row 3 straight ground balls or someone will hit into a double play.

I can think of 2 future hall of famers that have pretty similar numbers. Maddux and Glavine were never really dominant strikeout pitchers. They may have a couple of years where they racked up K's but most seasons they pitched to contact and let the defense to care of business.
Another thing people don't mention is Garland just like Maddux and Glavine rarely walks anyone.

Jon Garland dose not stink ! Dose any one remeber 2005 and 2006 he was an 18 game winner both years he gets alot of wins per year . I know his era was a little high with the Angels thats just because he did not fit good with that team , he needs to come back to Chicago where he belongs and you would see him do well again . Jon Garland is a winner !!!! I wish he would come back to the White Sox!
