Patrick Newman of NPB Tracker passes along a Sanspo report (link in Japanese) that Kevin Mench is nearing a one-year, $2MM deal with the Hanshin Tigers. Mench, 31 in January, wasn't going to find that kind of money in the States after hitting .243/.321/.357 in 131 plate appearances for the Blue Jays.

A little over two years ago, he was supposedly the main piece in the Carlos Lee trade. Now he's playing in Japan.

no, because mench is a veteran. the agreement has to do with amateur players. when japanese teams lure american high school and college prospects to skip the minor leagues and play professionally for an up-front million dollar contract in their league, you'll know the true weight of the tazawa signing.

no, japanese teams won't sign most of these prospects, but now, instead of just dealing with a greedy agent, mlb teams are contending with 3 japanese teams' contract offers when negotiating a multimillion dollar signing bonus for a 17-year old kid who hit .800 for his high school team..

If you want to go to Japan to play baseball go. People are making this out too much. He asked not to get drafted, and they did not draft him. He wanted to fulfil a dream to play in USA, good for him and the owners of Japan, for olbliging him.

Good for Mench. Him and his huge head have been lost the last couple years. Good power/low OBP guy to play in the Nippon league. He'll be hyped and sell tickets.
