Latest On Andy Pettitte

According to John Harper of the New York Daily News:

A person in regular contact with Yankee brass said Tuesday he believes the club still wants Andy Pettitte back and believes a deal will get done, perhaps as early as next week. According to this person, someone in the Yankee organization was putting out that word as something of a scare tactic, knowing that Pettitte badly wants to pitch for the Yankees next season. "They just want him at their price, that's still the bottom line," the person said.

Pettitte, 36, posted a 4.54 ERA in 33 starts this year.  His 2.9 K/BB and strong groundball rate indicate he's capable of bouncing back.  He's more than a fifth starter.

Old story, either sign or dont sign. Too much of a hassle for a pitcher passed his prime. Im tired of reading about the what if's wake me up when he signs with someone. How hard can it be?

Does anyone really even care anymore?

I'm sure it'll happen soon. He's the best option for the Yankee's situation and wants to be there. Obviously he shouldnt be paid like a front end starter (16m) but I can't imagine the yankees would invest all of that money in the team and get caught up haggling over where the middle ground should be.

I said a week ago that this was a scare tactic!!!

why arent the mets on pettite? he'd be nice on a 1 + option or two year deal

and since everyone loves BABIP, his this year was .339, and hes been over 200innings for 7 out of the last 9years

"They just want him at their price, that's still the bottom line,"

coming from a team that just spent 500 million dollars. id be pissed if i was petit. if the yanks want him back they should just give him what he wants

sign for the 10m and be part of a Championship team again before you leave the big stage

You can't get pissed off b/c you were overpaid last year already.

Everyone know he is not worth 16 million.

Pettitte will sign with the Yankees or retire, and I think he will sign Monday when the Yankees reopen their offices. He made it perfectly clear in an interview earlier this off-season at Joe Torre's Safe at Home fundraiser that he wants to pitch for the Yankees.

Part of the reason the Yankees paid him 16 mil last year was because he was considering retiring and they wanted to be sure they had a solid starter so they lured him back with a big fat paycheck. They didn't know what Mussina was going to give them, they were going with Kennedy and Hughes both big question marks, and the only sure thing at the time was Wang.

If he really wants to come back, and more imprtantly win another championship, he should accept the $10M already. Nobody expects much other than eating innings and being a classy guy.

All this drama for $6M although I'll admit the Yankees need him more than he needs the Yankees. If this drags on, look at Lowe. Jobs can always go back to the 'pen and last year taught us not to trust major innings from Hughes or Kennedy.

"coming from a team that just spent 500 million dollars. id be pissed if i was petit. if the yanks want him back they should just give him what he wants"

Hell yeah! Why should Pettitte be the only Yankee who isn't overpaid? It's not fair.

take the ten million already. you can win one more before you retire.

the yankees already have one of the best 1-2-3 punches in baseball..now they can have the best all out rotation.

1. Sabathia
2. Wang
3. Burnett
4. Chamberlain
5. Pettite

Give him what he wants? Really?

The Yanks don't need Pettite, certainly not at $16 mil and not really even at the alleged discount $10 mil. They already have enough to make the playoffs, at which point they would go to the shorter rotation---which wouldn't include Pettite anyway. If all Pettite is is insurance, there are cheaper/healthier/younger options.

Enough with the sentimental contracts; isn't that what Posada is for?

Pettitte would be a good pick-up for the dodgers who are looking to
1) build on their rotation
2) bring a veteran to teach kershaw, elbert, etc.
3) avoid long-term contracts

dodger stadium is a pitchers park that loves groundball pitchers, combined with adequate defense, and being reunited with Torre.

offer him a 2 year deal with $19MM guaranteed, and some incentives based on performance

"offer him a 2 year deal with $19MM guaranteed, and some incentives based on performance"

Yikes! That is complete and total overpayment.

Actually AA, I'd rather sign Pettitte at that rate than sign Garland or Wolf at it. You know you'll get 200+ innings from Pettitte, and a solid ERA. Remember, the Dodgers would be bringing him in solely as a #4 or #5 starter to eat innings and mentor young Kershaw. In that way, getting Pettitte at $19 million/2 years is a pretty decent base deal.
