« Nationals Have Serious Interest In Bradley | Main | Cubs To Target Brian Roberts Yet Again? »
Bill Ladson of MLB.com has been told by a baseball source that reports of the Nationals' interest in Manny Ramirez are false.
Ladson notes two fairly obvious reasons why Manny isn't a good fit in D.C.:

Maybe Ramirez can get a job as poster boy and spokesman for what not to do with the MLB player's union during the walk/option year of a contract?

Will Manny just resign with the Dodgers already?
This is getting boooorrrrring.

Good. I wish the Dodgers would come out next and say they aren't interested. I'd like to see Manny have to beg some team to sign him for $10 million or less. He may want $20+ but if no one wants him he's going to have to make due with what he can get.

If Manny doesnt sign soon with the dodgers hes screwed the Nats were a team that made sense for him but now he will have to almost definitly take the 2/45 offer the dodgers had in the beggining if he drags this out longer then he might not even get that

Interest in Bradley but no Manny? Thats silly.

Major price difference between Manny and Bradley...
I would prefer a BMW, but I bought a Ford!

no it isn't. Manny can't bat left-handed.
and our lineup is WAY overloaded with right-handers. we need someone who can hit left-handed.

*sigh*
The first reason of not signing Manny contradicts itself, except for the right handed part, we are overloaded on outfielders.
I'm not opposed to Bradley, but I would like us very much to stay away from him and just send an offer to Dunn and Hudson :P

The Nationals should go after Manny...they may have a truck load of outfielders but none of them even come close to Manny's hitting ability.
Yes Manny is old but he's still a great player and would put the franchise in the "worth watching" category which it just isn't at the moment.
They sign Manny they get better, more attractive to fans and perhaps even to other free agents.
I think its a risk worth taking for no cost in talent or their first round pick.

This is Great , Many being Manny has Finaly caught up with him . Pushing down a 64 year old Press Sec. was the last straw for Me . I hope the dodgers are the olny place he has , and I hope their new offer is 10 mil for 1 year , then if he doesn't produce ,and act right next year he won't get offered nothing .... I love this . its time these players had to pay for their actions .

Right...so Manny is blocked by Austin Kearns and Wily Mo Pena? Gimme a break...
Posted by: Smoltz's Beard | December 31, 2008 at 07:42 PM
yeah because Kearns and Pena are the ONLY TWO RIGHT-HANDED OUTFIELDERS WE HAVE.
no, but we have a 24 year old Dukes a 23 year old Milledge, and a 30 year old Willingham. all right handed.
we also have Zimmerman and Flores. both right handed.
and we've got 2 switch hitters. that's our lineup as it stands right now, with no further additions. a switch-hitter at the top, a switch-hitter at the bottom, and 7 righties inbetween.
we need a LEFT-HANDED BAT in the middle of the order. what's so hard to comprehend about this?
Manny is not blocked by anyone. but we're fine with the right-handed bats we do have, they are all (except willingham) young and growing, and we're good with that for now.
we don't need anymore right-handed bats in the lineup.
and even if we did sign Manny, morons like you would just turn around and say "they signed another outfielder OMGWTFBBQ!".

Manny on a bad team ... that's a recipe for disaster.
Posted by: GoPhils | December 31, 2008 at 08:32 PM
sorry, 6 righties inbetween. not 7.

(Adam Dunn sits in a coffeehouse, waiting, until Jim Bowden enters from stage right)
Jim Bowden: You wanted to see me?
Adam Dunn: Yeah, I did.
Bowden: Well, make it quick.
Dunn: I heard you were in need of a middle-of-the-order bat *cough*, and a left handed hitter *cough*
Bowden: And?
Dunn: (waits for Bowden to figure it out)
Bowden: Oh, I see now...
Dunn: Shall I get the pen and paper?
Bowden: What are you talking about?!
Dunn: You DO want to sign me....right?
Bowden: And what makes you think that?!
Dunn: I'm the perfect fit for what you need!!! Don't you see that?!
Bowden: No. You see, we ONLY sign players that we DON'T need.
Dunn: But....but....
Bowden: You're wasting my time. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have an appointment with Jason Varitek.
(Bowden angrily storms out of the coffeehouse. Dejected, Dunn slowly walks off stage left, followed by a worried-looking Jim Hendry)

"we need a LEFT-HANDED BAT in the middle of the order. what's so hard to comprehend about this?"
So you wouldn't take Albert Pujols or David Wright because they hit right-handed? Should a team like the Braves not pursue Jake Peavy because they would rather have a RHP? Nutso.
Posted by: vtadave | January 01, 2009 at 01:57 AM
"...rather have a LHP". I'm a bit drunk.
Posted by: vtadave | January 01, 2009 at 02:00 AM
the LH/RH thing is stupid, because he's too good of a hitter to worry about that.
*but*
the rest of the arguments against manny to DC all make sense. there's just no serious reason for the nats to sign him.
while he's a far better hitter than any of the OFs the nats have, most of the nats OFs are young and will (hopefully) develop and be around when they do. manny will be gone when that happens and only prevents one of those guys from getting PT.
manny's a great teammate and hitter when he's happy, but a terrible teammate and a quitter when he's not.
so... will he be happy in DC? a team that won't compete for the playoffs in the 2 yrs he'd be signed for? of course not. and he's quit on the team and be an awful teammate and bad influence on the young guys on the team.
he's the guy you sign when your team is on the cusp and he's the guy who puts you over the top. the nats aren't that team.
as far as drawing fans, give me a break. manny isn't cal ripken or barry bonds or someone like that. he won't appreciably change the draw at nationals park.
he makes no sense whatsoever in a nats uni.

Posted by: vtadave | January 01, 2009 at 01:57 AM
Albert Pujols and David Wright aren't free agents.
way to sensationalize the argument.
are you going to bring up Hank Aaron and Harmon Killebrew next? how about Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire?
Manny is 36(supposedly), right-handed, and he's a headcase, especially on a team that isn't a championship contender. he doesn't make sense for the Nationals to sign. simple as that.
between Manny, Dunn, Bradley, Abreu, etc. i.e. the people who ARE free agents, I want Dunn, but would be fine with Abreu or Bradley.
I wouldn't complain if we got Manny, but he's not my first choice at all.
