This is a good signing for the Pads. Jody was one of the few experiments that worked for SD last year. He played a solid CF, which is worth its weight in gold at Petco, and held his own at the plate.

First good move in a while, it would have been nice if they didn't resign Giles, who is basically looking like OJ Simpson according to the Bible belt.

"First good move in a while, it would have been nice if they didn't resign Giles, who is basically looking like OJ Simpson according to the Bible belt."
You are joking, right? First, this news just came out. She didn't even complete filing until the 5th. Also, whatever domestic problems he is having (and if he really did beat her, I will rank Giles with Brett Myers on my least favorite players in baseball list), that doesn't change his offensive and defensive numbers.

She is basically saying that he murdered her unborn child. Anyway, Giles has and always will hit into a lot of double plays (Rally Killer).
The Padres promised Moneyball and haven't delivered. Giles is back and makes a lot of $. According to the book, they can turn a decent starting pitcher into a closer, hopefully they won't concede to Hoffman. I want to see the young guys, they may struggle, but they do have a lot to prove. Much rather watch them then OJ.

"The Padres promised Moneyball and haven't delivered. Giles is back and makes a lot of $."
Giles is well worth the money he makes. In this market, his numbers are actually worth a lot more, especially seeing that his HR numbers would be better outside PETCO. He is almost the definition of Moneyball, except that he can play defense and run.
"According to the book, they can turn a decent starting pitcher into a closer, hopefully they won't concede to Hoffman."
The book was a Billy Beane love fest. Remember that Jeremy Brown guy from the book? He did f'all in the Majors. Kirk Saarloos? Never amounted to much at all. Chad Bradford the best reliever around? Hardly.
"She is basically saying that he murdered her unborn child."
And no one knows if any of that is true yet.

@ Hitman
The Moneyball philosophy isn't about any one particular statistic or idea, it's about finding underrated value to help small market teams compete with larger payrolls.
It's pretty funny you claim that the Padres haven't done that in a thread about Jody Gerut, who provided about $10 million dollars worth of wins for the Padres while being paid $700,000.
Also, the Padres have made the playoffs twice, and very nearly made the postseason a third time since 2004, while competing against much larger payrolls than theirs. That's delivering.

I will agree that the Padres have found some good value over the year, AA, you are one of those people who always has to be right even though you know nothing. I probably know who you are, deal with it.

Melvin Nieves- Also, the Padres have made the playoffs twice, and very nearly made the postseason a third time since 2004, while competing against much larger payrolls than theirs. That's delivering.
That was players that Kevin Towers brought in so giving Sandy Alderson and Moneyball holds no water.

89 Okland A's payroll was #5 in payroll. 90 Okland A #3 in payroll. 91 #1 in payroll.
Really Moneyball is small market team compete with larger payrolls?

AA - Here is a video were Giles hit the woman.
http://video.signonsandiego.com/vmix_hosted_apps/p/media?id=2552747
Here is another witness said, According to her complaint, Cheri Olvera was one of those victims as recently as December of 2007:
“After having driven frightfully recklessly with the intent to horrify Plaintiff (Olvera) and her friend ... while severely yelling and manhandling Plaintiff in the driveway of her home, (Giles) violently extracted Plaintiff through the open window of her automobile and threw her to the ground where she landed under the vehicle.”
Giles is F***ed.

Isn't Gerut the guy who sucked with the Indians and then, when they tried to send him to the minors supposedly faked a knee injury going so far as to get unnecessary surgery on it so that he could go on the DL and keep his service clock ticking while collecting a big league salary?
Or something like that, right?
Posted by: OldDutchPots | December 19, 2008 at 08:40 PM
After all these years i'm still amazed at all the people who miss the point of moneyball.
Chad Bradford wasn't supposed to be the best reliever around but he did put up great numbers for a reliever in the minors without getting much of a shot at all because of a lack of stuff. What did he turn into when Beane gave him a shot? A damn solid reliever that he paid cheap for.

That video doesn't show me anything other than some pushing and I watched it multiple times. If it is true, ti was probably 'roid rage since it came from when he may still have been doing steroids.

Melvin is dead on about Moneyball - the central theme was finding value wherever you could. At that time OBP was way undervalued - so they targeted it.
Also, while it doesn't look very good for Giles (and his silence isn't helping) I'd like to see it play out before we cruicify him. Also, calling him OJ is just a BIT drastic IMO.
