Phillies Decline To Offer Arbitration To Burrell, Moyer

According to Todd Zolecki of the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Phillies declined to offer arbitration to Type A free agents Pat Burrell and Jamie Moyer.  The decisions are somewhat surprising; MLB.com had a story this morning saying arb offers were likely for both.  Paul Hagen adds that Type B free agent Rudy Seanez also did not receive an offer.

Sluggers Burrell and Adam Dunn were both denied today, as the Phillies and D'Backs didn't feel two draft picks were worth the risk.  The Phils are still working to re-sign Moyer.

Sabean - time to sign Pat the Bat to play 1b/LF!

Ruben Amaro Jr. just made a sketchy decision with Burrell.

Your team just won the WS.

Burrell, Wood, and Abreu are all mistakes IMHO.

Amaro's first idiotic move and he made two at the same time
Impressive

I really do see Sabean signing Burrel to play 1B now that he won't cost Picks.

Seems like the Angels have backup plans for a 1st baseman if they fail to sign Teixiera and his last name is not Konerko. Instead, it's World Series Champion Pat Burrell: http://mlb.fanhouse.com/2008/12/01/pat-burrell-could-be-headed-for-the-angels-and-for-first-base/

The Giants desperately need power and Burrell provides it. He has Bay Area roots and as a right handed hitter, he won't get killed by the dimensions of AT&T. Plus, the Giants have money to spend and, as usual, it's burning a hole in their pockets. With no loss of picks, going after Burrell makes good sense for the Giants. At 31 he isn't that old. They can hide his defense at 1st.

Phone rings- is Bill Neukom "Brian, wake up, the phillies didn't offer Burrell arb, are you going to do something?"
"Well Bill, we just signed Renteria to a 5 year deal, but if you really want, i'll make the call"
"Doesn't it make sense Brian?"
"No more than Richie Sexson, but since you already shot that down..."
"Make the call Brian"
(ring, ring, ring) "jason Giambi, we would like to offer you a 5 year deal..."

It's really surprising that the Phillies are this intent on NOT bringing Burrell back. He's going to get a decent contract somewhere now.

Wouldn't it have made sense to offer Moyer arbitration? He is a type-A free agent (I think) so if he signs elsewhere you're going to get something out of it...and they want him back on a short deal which, if he accepted arbitration, it would be. This only makes sense if the Phillies plan on bringing him back for significantly less.

Wow. Is bringing Pat Burrell back for one year at market value that much of a risk to let two picks walk? He would have definitely gotten a multi year deal. Moyer doesn't seem quite as strange because they probably will bring him back anyway, but still. Weird stuff.

nrmax,

haha I sense a little happiness in your post that Burrell will no longer be tormenting your Mets.

I agree its shortsighted of all of these GM's that aren't offering arbitration to those that should get multi-year deals. With the increase in revenue from a WS it makes no sense not to sign Burrell to a short term deal if he accepted. Saving a couple million by going out and getting a Rocco Baldelli type to platoon with Dobbs is very risky for what you'd save. Ruben better know what he's doing. Oh and Moyer was a no-brainer. If God forbid they ever lost him that's ridiculous. Wait, spend 24.5 million on a scrub (Eaton) but don't give Moyer say 1 year and 10 million off a 16-7 3.71 ERA year. No sense.

Since no player has ever had their salary decrease when going to arbitration, the Phils were looking at paying Burrell 15+M and Moyer 9+M had they accepted. IMO neither player is worth that much. Burrell will probably get 3/36 and Moyer will probably get 2/10. I can somewhat understand the argument about Burrell since he will likely be signed elsewhere, but I doubt Moyer will. If Burrell does walk that money along with extra WS revenue better get disbursed to Hamels, Howard, Madson, Victorino, Werth in that order.

voice of reason,

i disagree with your assessment of Moyer. With Burnett and Lowe talking the likes of 15-18MM per year Moyer and his 16-7 record and 3.71 ERA in a hitters park and the way he tutors the younger pitchers is well worth giving arbitration too.

And that assumption is THAT they will give that money to those players.

Burnett and Lowe are solidified #2/B-ace starters, while I and all Phillies fans admire Moyer he is a low #3/solid #4. Despite his numbers, the man is 46 years old and can be had at a discount from his previous years salary of $8.5M.

The reason the Phillies did not offer Burrell Arbitration is because they were afraid he'd actually take it, and then they would have to give him a raise on top of having to keep him another year and not get the 2 picks they thought they'd be getting...

They are ready to move on to someone better than Burrell, that is what this statement is saying, so if Burrell took the arbitration, then we would have had $15-$17 million less to spend somewhere else that they intend on spending.

Case closed....

Moyer will still sign will the Phillies... and now that they know Burrell won't be back, they can work on filling that hole with a cheaper platoon in RF and move Werth to LF. Baldelli or Rivera fits the mold... AND now that $17 million saved on Pat can go toward maybe money towards AJ or Lowe... that would be sweet!

I'd love to see Tampa splurge 1 time on a Burrell signing. He'd put them into the playoffs (and Yankees out of them) for the next 2-3 years and imagine the Rays could get him on the cheap also for 12-13mil and 3-4 years only.

I do agree that the Phillies will occupy the hole with having Dobbs in left field and signing someone along the lines of Baldelli and Rivera, but the Phillies have a lot of arbitration raises due and I think that was part of why they let Burrell go so easily. Therefore, I don't really think they would go out there and pay $15 million a year on an overpriced starting pitcher aside from resigning Moyer.

Dobbs will still platoon with Feliz at 3b.. and maybe help out in the OF - But I see Werth taking over as the full-time LF and Jenkins/Stairs being the left-handed hitters in RF and adding a Right-handed platoon to cover RF.. Unless Jenkins/Stairs are better off in LF and Werth stays in RF.

Either way, we have both Jenkins and Stairs under contract, we are more than well covered by power-hitting Left handed hitters.

Baldelli or Rivera fills that hole to platoon...

Loretta, Weathers, Brocail are all non-tendered arbitration free agents the Phillies may also look at now... Not sure we look at Cruz anymore since he's a type A FA that was given arbitration..

One SURE thing if the Phillies have the guts.. Manny Ramirez!!!!!

Like Boras said, his merchandising will pay his salary alone... and who better to PROTECT Howard????

No one better...
