Don't think Lowe is really interested in Philly and I don't think Philly is really interested in him, the report about their interest in him as a ploy to drive down the cost for Moyer is more accurate but it don't seem to be worker especially at JM's age hes not young he has been through this many times and knows what he wants especially this close to retirement it is time to pad the wallet.

With an offense that includes Utley, Howard, and Rollins, they don't really have to worry about re-signing Burrell as much. They're doing the right thing by worrying about their pitching, as after Hamels and Myers, there are question marks: Blanton is so-so; is Kendrick ready?; Moyer or move on?
I'm sure that playing in that band box park of theirs, they can pick any OFer that can somewhat hit, and turn him into an offensive force (Jason Werth)

This has nothing to do with Phillies but it sure is funny how a year and a half things dont really change or maybe it just took that long to work out a deal surrounding the mannyficent slugger and if im not mistaken at the same time there was the whole three team trade buzz that sent Bay to Boston and Ramirez to LA
By Tim Dierkes [November 30, 2006 at 9:43am CST]
Found via RotoWorld - Curt Schilling yesterday confirmed that Manny Ramirez "wants out of Boston." So that's one roadblock out of the way - at least the does in fact desire a trade.
Meanwhile, Gordon Edes of the Boston Globe has a full update. He expects that Manny is going to want more money whether via his options exercised or just a contract extension. Theo Epstein is mum, but Edes says that the Sox have not spoken to the Dodgers on the topic. Edes mentions that the Padres are interested.
Murray Chass at the New York Times brings up the Mets, Giants, Padres, Rangers, Phillies, and Orioles as the suitors, naming Baltimore as a good fit. He says that last year the Orioles tried getting Jon Papelbon in a Manny deal and couldn't pull it off.
Finally, from Buster Olney this morning in his blog:
"Heard that the Red Sox are kicking around specific names in their trade talks for Manny Ramirez, and that they feel they are going to get a good deal for Ramirez -- if a deal is completed. To reiterate: If the Dodgers decide they want Ramirez, they will almost certainly get him because they have the most to offer."

This is a thread about the World Champion Phillies.
Please don't muddy it with talk of inferior loser teams.

Strange that money is what's holding up the Moyer deal. I thought it would have been the years.
While I think Moyer deserves a raise above his $7 Million annual salary last year, if he is expecting anything close to what Lowe and Burnett are asking for ($15 Million), I'd pass and look for other alternatives.
Posted by: UtleyFan | December 05, 2008 at 10:03 AM
UtleyFan, the ownership clearly doesn't want to give Moyer a modest raise.
If they were willing to do so, they would have offered arb and thus had the chance to recoup picks if some team does blow him away, or if he retires
Instead they are daring him to shop around for a better offer than what he made last year. It's a gamble...if they do bring him back they'll have saved money they could have given up in arb. But if he signs elsewhere it would be a horrible decision IMO

Yeah, I would be okay with giving him the 1/10 or 2/20 that bosox87 suggested but probably wouldn't go much higher than that.
I think Moyer can be effective for another two years but I don't expect him to duplicate his 2007 numbers in the future.
I sure do hope Ruben has a backup plan just in case.

Sorry, I meant 2008 numbers.

If the Phils are focused on pitching over LF, maybe they should take a flier on Jerry Hairston.
He's a decent righty bat to platoon with the lefty OFs they already have. PLUS, he could fill-in at 2B until Utley comes back from his hip surgery.
Posted by: Haymaker | December 05, 2008 at 10:29 AM
I like Hairston, but not as part of an OF platoon. I like him taking Bruntlett's super utility spot

Well it'll be difficult to those 196+ innings the Phillies have gotten out of Moyer the last two years. There's already a question mark for the 5th slot in the rotation, they don't need one for the 4th starter as well. 10 million for a 4 or so ERA and 180-200 innings doesn't seem entirely unreasonable, especially given the doubts they have to have about all of his in house replacements.

I think it would be a good business move for Omar to swoop in and offer Moyer a 2/20 deal and see how he responds. There are a few reasons why I think they should. Moyer is old, but I don't worry about him getting hurt with his style. The Mets would no longer have to face him, and he has owned the Mets in the last 2 years, beating them multiple times in big spots. Jamie Moyer also owns the Florida Marlins bigtime, the team that has given the Mets the most problems the last two years, even more so then the Phils. If he had success in Philly, he should do fine in a much nicer park to pitch in. He would not cost a draft pick for the Mets, he could fill in the number 4 spot in your rotation. You can then bring back Pedro Martinez as your number 5 guy, with Jon Niese waiting in AAA incase of an injury. Or, you could bring back Oliver Perez and have Jamie Moyer in the back end of the rotation, which would give you 3 lefties to throw at the Phillies. While doing all of this, you take away a key part of the Phillies success in the last 2 years. I don't see a downside to offering this guy a contract. If you can't beat'em, sign'em.
Posted by: nrmax88 | December 05, 2008 at 10:44 AM
Jamie would never sign with the Mets, he's a Phillies fan, he'd wouldn't pitch for the rival...IMO he either stays in Philly or goes to Seattle (the 2 places he calls home), moving to a new city for 2 years doesn't make sense for him
Posted by: Phillys Phinest | December 05, 2008 at 10:57 AM
Maybe, maybe not. Couldn't hurt to try. Seems like if all he cared about was staying home in Philly, he would have signed. If the Phils are offering 2/16 and the Mets 2/22 then who knows. You know A-Rod was a Met fan right? I'm just saying, you are probably right, but it couldn't hurt to try.

I cant belive that the Phils whole day revolves around Moyer.

I don't understand Amaro's approach to the LF situation. I agree it shouldn't be a priority, but if they go into the season with a Jenkins/Mayberry platoon in left then they are in trouble.
Still saying not offering Burrell arb was an all-around bonehead move.
Posted by: PhillyPhan6 | December 05, 2008 at 11:14 AM
LF is not the problem, even with Burrell gone, UNLESS they decide to go after an everyday player, all we need is a platoon RH hitter in RF to go along with Jenkins and Stairs. Werth will be the full time LF or RF with Jenkins/Stairs the left handed answer to the other corner OF slot.
Baldelli or Rivera would be nice. For a super UTL player, I would love to see the Phils sign Lopez, he plays 2b, ss and 3b and all OF spots.. has better pop and speed than Hairston and better average.
Sign BOTH Lowe and Moyer (and BTW, Lowe said he DID want to come back to a NL East Coast team)and we'd have the best starting rotation AND the best Bullpen in the Majors.
I have thrown this out many times, if the Phillies REALLY want to be serious.. Sign Manny!!! He'd be PERFECT to protect Howard, and we all know that is what is wrong with Howard, nobody FEARED Burrell, so they pitch to Howard, throw him junk, and Howard wants to swing.... knowing Manny is behind him changes the entire game plan for the opposition. And I agree with Boras, Manny has the merchandising market which almost by itself will pay for his contract along with the extra attendance.
He is one of a few players that pays for himself in marketing alone.

How crazy would a package deal involving Jason Donald and Lou Marson going over to the Royals for Zach Greinke be?
I like all those guys, so I would hate to part with any of them, but it would definitely be interesting!!
Posted by: Haymaker | December 05, 2008 at 12:03 PM
nrmax,
actually i don't think Omar does that because of the injury risk. Moyer's 46 now and those "elbow bumps" with Reyes and Delgado could fracture something at his advanced age.
Haymaker,
there's no way that's enough for KC. We don't have enough top level prospects to get Greinke although I'd love to have him, but again you'd have to wonder how pitchers go from non pressure situations like KC to the rabid fanbases of the Northeast.
FyreKnight,
I agree 100%. Wait until Manny's offers don't go far and offer 3 for 60 million, Moyer at 2 for 18 if necessary and then call it an offseason. That makes more sense than Baldelli or Rivera, adding Punto and then Lowe. It'd be about the same price and Howard would have 60 HR's and 160RBI's easy!

Rather add Felipe Lopez than Punto though...
