8:13pm: Lauber has the deal: the Phils receive catcher Ronny Paulino from the Pirates for Triple A backstop in Jason Jaramillo.
7:24pm: Scott Lauber talked to Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr., who has agreed to a small trade a notch above the Greg Golson/John Mayberry swap. The players traded are on 40-man rosters though. They're awaiting physicals.
The Pirates could have a small trade in the works as well.

Adam Eaton for a Rookie League BP pitcher
Posted by: RWS | December 10, 2008 at 07:28 PM
twinsfan, what has lead you to believe that? because there about to complete a trade slightly above the Mayberry trade? how does that cement them at the top of the NL East?
Posted by: Showtime35 | December 10, 2008 at 07:28 PM
who have the phillies been talking about moving??
Posted by: 04Forever | December 10, 2008 at 07:28 PM
can i see the players please? im guessing with cubbies?
Posted by: bronx | December 10, 2008 at 07:29 PM
seriously?
really?
why is this winter meetings nothing but scrubs switching teams, minor league contract signings, and so many debunked and ridiculous rumors. if Teixieria sneezes, a reporter will write which state the loogy is shaped like and write it up as "Teixieria likes California!!!" and its a rumor.
come on, give some juice. some news. something tangible.
this has been the WORST GM Meetings in years. Blah. Maybe tomorrow will be better.
hey twinsfan. other site should be back soon.

The fact that it was sarcasm.
Posted by: twinsfan | December 10, 2008 at 07:30 PM
That sounds sweet bob.
Posted by: twinsfan | December 10, 2008 at 07:32 PM
Bye Bye Adam Eaton...
Any other thoughts? Maybe to a team like...St. Louis? Milwaukee?
Posted by: B3NG4L | December 10, 2008 at 07:33 PM
I can't tell if the "smaller trade a notch above" is sarcasm or truth.
Posted by: northpaw22k | December 10, 2008 at 07:34 PM
Blue jays get Adam Eaton, Phillies get some BP pitcher. Nobody needs pitching like the jays do.
Posted by: kallis08 | December 10, 2008 at 07:35 PM
Gotta think a team like the Orioles or Padres would bite on Eaton.
Posted by: mateodh | December 10, 2008 at 07:36 PM
Adam Eaton for Hairston... thats a guess, Eaton had success in SD
Posted by: prov1x41 | December 10, 2008 at 07:37 PM
yea i agree bye eaton i am so happy
Posted by: derman1984 | December 10, 2008 at 07:38 PM
i would bet adam eaton for estaban german (KC)
Posted by: bobhamelin | December 10, 2008 at 07:40 PM
SUSPENSE!!! lol jk. I believe that Dye will be traded to the Phils this winter though.
Posted by: ballerwhiteboy | December 10, 2008 at 07:40 PM
Would the Padres really want to take on Eaton's salary? They are hesitant to take on a 5 mil salary right now...
Posted by: B3NG4L | December 10, 2008 at 07:40 PM
bobhamelin, what site do you run?
Posted by: ballerwhiteboy | December 10, 2008 at 07:40 PM
It's not a trade site FYI baller.
Posted by: twinsfan | December 10, 2008 at 07:41 PM
baller. i don't run a site, but i promised Tim i wouldn't advertise it on his site. plus its down for a server move and no ETA on re-upping it.
Posted by: bobhamelin | December 10, 2008 at 07:43 PM
Adam Eaton to Cleveland for Tony Graffanino
Posted by: Tough | December 10, 2008 at 07:45 PM
the phils came out and said they would eat 8 of the 9 million this year
Posted by: derman1984 | December 10, 2008 at 07:48 PM
2b eric patterson has been traded to the phillies. no details on who is in return.
Posted by: arly2380 | December 10, 2008 at 07:48 PM

Posted by: B3NG4L | December 10, 2008 at 07:40 PM
phillies let it be known they will eat 8 million of the 9 million salary and want nothing back. tim posted the article several stories down on here.

Posted by: B3NG4L | December 10, 2008 at 07:50 PM
Arly where did you hear that?

I had my doubts ... but now they have GOT to be the favorites to repeat as world series Champs.
Listen, i understand a tweek like this from a yankees fan, a red sox fan heck EVEN a Mets fan, but a twins fan? Come on now. Weren't you guys supposed to be "contracted" a couple years back?
how bout a little respect for the World Champs, OK?
Posted by: philsWSchamps | December 10, 2008 at 07:51 PM
who do you know that is patterson
Posted by: derman1984 | December 10, 2008 at 07:54 PM
how do you know that patterson got traded to the phils
Posted by: derman1984 | December 10, 2008 at 07:59 PM
Knowing the Rockies FO, it would be Eaton for Street or Atkins or something like that.
Posted by: mkorpal | December 10, 2008 at 08:03 PM
Chris Coste to O's for a guy.
Posted by: MPM | December 10, 2008 at 08:03 PM
Wow! Nice move....Ronnie Paulino is much better than Ruiz.
Posted by: B3NG4L | December 10, 2008 at 08:15 PM
Ronny Paulino is a decent catcher in my eyes. Now we have a logjam at Catcher.
Coste, Ruiz, Paulino, and Marson. This has to mean Marson may be part of a deal for someone else. Delmon Young or Mark Derosa perhaps?
Posted by: Phils Swiss! | December 10, 2008 at 08:17 PM
This trade makes no sense for the Pirates. I guess the Pirates just gave up on Paulino. I mean there is no chance he plays much next year but I think they could have done better for him.
Posted by: BucSox | December 10, 2008 at 08:17 PM
B3NG4L,
no way. Ruiz is the starter. personally Paulino doesn't make sense because Marson should be Ruiz' backup this year. Coste is definitely out now. But does Paulino have options?
Don't tell me they'll trade Marson?
Posted by: philsWSchamps | December 10, 2008 at 08:18 PM
I agree with Phils Swiss. I does not make any sense why we just traded for another catcher, so its possible that we are gonna trade one for either an infielder or a left fielder
Posted by: prov1x41 | December 10, 2008 at 08:19 PM
SNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORE
where are the "holy crap!" trades and signings.
forrest gump woulda knew CC was going to the Yankees.
where are the "holy crap!" signings.
I feel like 3 of 4 of the BEST days of offseason baseball have been as exciting as the first 3 days of the offseason.
dodgers got mark loretta. oooh. royals got horam. ooooh. some minor leaguer got traded for a catcher. oooh.
it's like playing bingo at a senior home this year. where's the SPLASH! the INTRIGUE. the SUSPENSE.
where's the bathroom?
Posted by: bobhamelin | December 10, 2008 at 08:24 PM
Well Paulino is good defensive catcher so my guess is that we trade Ruiz and someone to Florida for Hermdia.. it makes sense
Posted by: prov1x41 | December 10, 2008 at 08:29 PM
Could we flip Paulino to the marlins now?
Posted by: Sam | December 10, 2008 at 08:30 PM
This better not be a prelude to a Marson deal. I swear to God Ruben, I will burn it down ....
(In the Office Space sense, not the, you know, real/terrorist sense)
Posted by: Bourne's_Identities | December 10, 2008 at 08:32 PM
Sam that's what I was thinking. He could be trade bait himself
I don't think this move has anything to do with Marson. That would be like saying the Mayberry Jr trade indicates they are going to move Taylor
Posted by: wayne gomes | December 10, 2008 at 08:32 PM
Well Paulino is good defensive catcher so my guess is that we trade Ruiz and someone to Florida for Hermdia.. it makes sense
they would want a really good pitching prospect.. i dont think the phillies and marlins make a match
Posted by: 661dodgerblue | December 10, 2008 at 08:32 PM
What is this? Who is this Jamarillo kid?
Posted by: piratefan14 | December 10, 2008 at 08:32 PM
I have a hard time believing that the Marlins would prefer Ruiz or Paulino over Jaramillo himself.
Ruiz and Paulino are garbage. At least Jaramillo has some semblance of hope being the youngest of the bunch.
Posted by: stellar | December 10, 2008 at 08:32 PM
I think Paulino won't be a Phillie for long. He'll be on the move soon.
Posted by: nymforlife | December 10, 2008 at 08:34 PM
I have a hard time believing that if someone else wanted Paulino they wouldn't have traded for him themselves. Not like Jaramillo is a hard chip to beat.
Posted by: Bourne's_Identities | December 10, 2008 at 08:37 PM
I think the catchers will be Ruiz and Paulino next year with Coste on the move.
Either Marson gets traded for someone or he spends another season in AAA.
Bourne - You're right! It doesn't make sense that Paulino would net get flipped for someone else.
It has to be Coste and/or Marson on the move next.
Posted by: Phils Swiss! | December 10, 2008 at 08:41 PM
If you can keep him off the twinkies he might be alright.
Posted by: indybucfan | December 10, 2008 at 08:41 PM
"I have a hard time believing that the Marlins would prefer Ruiz or Paulino over Jaramillo himself."
"I have a hard time believing that the Marlins would prefer Ruiz or Paulino over Jaramillo himself"
Perhaps if we flip this maybe the Pirates are the ones that aquired this guy to flip him to Florida perhaps in a deal for Hermida and Andino.
Pure speculation but otherwise I see no point to this move.
Posted by: BucSox | December 10, 2008 at 08:48 PM
I can't wait to see the Philly fans and Ronnie together haha. This guys is so lazy and has earned his nickname "jogging ronnie." Enjoy!
Posted by: nealisgod | December 10, 2008 at 08:50 PM
"I don't think this move has anything to do with Marson. That would be like saying the Mayberry Jr trade indicates they are going to move Taylor."
Um, what? Paulino, Ruiz, Marson and Coste can all be expected to compete for two spots on the MLB team this Spring Training. Therefore, the acquisition of Paulino directly affects the fate of the other three. Michael Taylor doesn't have a single AA at-bat; he's not going to sniff the majors until 2010 at the absolute earliest. Mayberry maybe challenges for a bench spot this year, maybe hangs around as a AAAA player; either way he doesn't really affect Taylor's fate.
Posted by: Bourne's_Identities | December 10, 2008 at 08:51 PM
jaramillo has little or no value. he's been in AAA for two years and was passed over by Marson already.
Posted by: philsWSchamps | December 10, 2008 at 08:52 PM
This move leaves me wondering as well what is going to happen with Marson. Coste I wouldn't mind losing and the same goes for Ruiz as long as the return is worth it, but there is no way in hell I would want Lou Marson traded considering our shortcomings on offense there the past two years. Say what you want about Ruiz, but his game calling and offensive prowess in the playoffs helped the Phils through the playoffs as much as any other player did on the roster.
Posted by: Jimmy Jam | December 10, 2008 at 09:01 PM
why is this not in the top stories section?????
lol jk
Posted by: philsWSchamps | December 10, 2008 at 09:10 PM
Bourne, we all hope to see Marson, but realistically he's going to AAA. Amaro confirmed this.
Adding an underachieving backup-type catcher does NOT mean Marson is trade bait. Now Coste (if he even has value) is another story
Posted by: wayne gomes | December 10, 2008 at 09:12 PM
Why didn't we include Adam Eaton in this trade?O'well we still didn't give up much, but come on Ruben Amaro this is the best you can do so far the Mets are out getting K-Rod and Putz and your trading for garbage players and still haven't resigned Moyer...You need to focus on that or don't be such a cheap a$$ and sign Derek Lowe.
Posted by: JT89 | December 10, 2008 at 10:38 PM
I don't think a lot of you have noticed how good Ruiz is at calling a game. His bat may be a bit weak, but his defense is what is going to make him the Phils' starter in 09.
As for Marson, I think the Phils will hang onto him unless they make a blockbuster. He's too valuable to their organization to give up for a player like Mark Derosa.
This trade does confuse me though. Trading catcher for catcher, neither of which will be a starter just doesn't make sense. But Ruben has been taking notes and studying Pat Gillick's style and may have learned something. Sometimes making the big splashes does not a champion make. [see:Yankees, New York (2001-2008)]
