« Redding For Taveras Trade Is Off | Main | Mets Not Interested In Juan Pierre »
5:25pm: Jon Paul Morosi confirms the interest from the Tigers side. He says the Tigers and Rangers have yet to have any serious trade talks about Sheffield. Also, it's not clear whether the Rangers are covered in Sheffield's no-trade clause. Morosi wonders whether the Rangers could try to take on Frank Catalanotto and the $6MM he has coming.
5:04pm: MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan talked to a Rangers official who said they would be willing to consider Sheffield if the Tigers want to give him away.
3:19pm: According to Gerry Fraley, the Rangers inquired with the Tigers on the availability of Gary Sheffield. The Tigers probably wouldn't mind moving Sheff's $14MM salary for '09.

This is what I love about the winter meetings....anything goes!!

Serioulsy, if they are willing to take on a 14 mil contract, offer that to Sheets over a few years...don't waste your time on Sheffield. Even if the Tigers ate some salary, they would want a pitching prospect.

I am a huge Sheff fan, but it would definitely benefit the Tigers if he was traded. If the Rangers agree to take on most of his salary, maybe the Tigers make and offer to Bobby Abreu or Adam Dunn?
Posted by: Rob M. | December 10, 2008 at 03:24 PM
NO. JD, just say NO.
Let someone else DH (whoever is not catchin - Salty or Teagarden...assuming both are still Rangers).
Posted by: tmoney352 | December 10, 2008 at 03:25 PM
Please, take him Rangers!! We could unload him, place Guillen at DH and let Joyce take over LF for us next year.
Posted by: hitman79 | December 10, 2008 at 03:25 PM
I really hope this happens. If it does we could move Guillen to DH and put Matt Joyce or Clete Thomas in Left.

Forget Sheffield; bring back Milton Bradley. Last year, Bradley & Hamilton were the most exciting hitting duo in baseball.

I lost all respect for Fraley when he worked for Dal Morn Rag and argued with me how Mulder would be an ace for years to come while Haren would be a #4/5 guy.
Bum. I'll post the email one of these days.

Kinda of offbeat, but Sheffield as a RH Left Fielder in Citizens Bank Park.
HE would hit 35HR's easy!!
Posted by: Phils Swiss! | December 10, 2008 at 03:29 PM
But my only problem with the wonderful Gary Sheffield is what is going to happen when his body starts breaking down more and he has trouble playing everyday in the field, he will say I told you guys I should have just been a DH

First Randy Johnson, now this. Surely JD is just having some fun with the bloggers. Next rumor...Rangers inquire about Mariano Rivera. Stay tuned!

"If the Rangers agree to take on most of his salary"
Not going to happen. The Rangers would already help the Tigers get rid of a headache as well as his huge salary and an aging player by sending them a young prospect, now you expect the Rangers to pick up the tab? Hah, give me some of what you're smoking.
The Rangers really need to stop looking at hitters and find some pitchers. They really need pitchers. Really really really really need pitchers. No wonder they won't be winning any time soon... Kind of reminds me of what Bowden is doing in Washington. (except he did get one pitcher)
Posted by: Ink&Paper | December 10, 2008 at 03:57 PM
He can be had for barely anything... just give him away and pay for about half then we can sign a reliever or two.
Then Joyce can start in LF or Larish at DH.
Posted by: TigerFan54 | December 10, 2008 at 04:16 PM
Are the Rangers just trying to mystify everyone with their blatant contradictions? We will not sign any big free agents! We will only raise our payroll 5 million dollars! We might sign a big free agent - but only a pitcher! Hey, let's see if we can pick up Sheffield and his 14 million dollar salary!
Do they realize how crazy this looks?

Si me gusta Sheffield vamos rangers a que agararlo.Sheffield es bien perron con el ganamos el campionato.
Posted by: Primo32 | December 10, 2008 at 04:50 PM
I don't know how to take this? Literally GIVE him away? Thats what I'm pretty sure he meant to say. So it's a joke.
Posted by: AtlantaBred | December 10, 2008 at 05:06 PM
So they Rangers will take on the whole $14MM salary? The Tigers should definitely do it for ANY prospect that the Rangers will give.
Posted by: Rob M. | December 10, 2008 at 05:06 PM
Dombrowski PLEASE get rid of this guy and while your at it see if there is any team interested in Maggs
Posted by: GoBlue4Life | December 10, 2008 at 05:12 PM
I think what Nolan Ryan is trying to say is, we'll take Sheffield, pay his 14 million dollar salary next year, and in return you'll get NOTHING, other than not having to pay Sheffield 14 million dollars.
Posted by: AtlantaBred | December 10, 2008 at 05:14 PM
Why trade Sheffield and Ordonez? If any two players in the lineup should be traded, it is Sheff and Guillen.

AtlantaBred
I would support them payin it, i just want Sheff gone so bad
Posted by: GoBlue4Life | December 10, 2008 at 05:17 PM

Don't trade Guillen. Magglio is set to make roughly 17 million next year. If the Tigers are wanting to cut payroll then this may be a good option. That money could in turn get them a good starting pitcher or closer.

Guillen should not be traded. Magglio is set to make 16 or 17 million next year. If the Tigers are trying to cut payroll then this may be a good option. Plus that money could get them a real good starting pitcher or closer
Posted by: GoBlue4Life | December 10, 2008 at 05:30 PM
^^^sorry bout the double post everyone
Posted by: GoBlue4Life | December 10, 2008 at 05:31 PM
Trading Magglio makes TONS of sense for the Tigers. They're trying to cut payroll and they need to get younger and deeper. Trade Mags for a few quality prospects. He could command a good bounty.
Posted by: AtlantaBred | December 10, 2008 at 05:31 PM
the tigers would be an idiot to let him go. if it wasn't for blaming him for the 08 tigers catching a brick in the regular season then the blame would fall squarely on management's shoulders. keep the grumpy scapegoat
Posted by: jedstylesux | December 10, 2008 at 05:32 PM
atlantabred, with all the corner outfielders on the market now why would a team trade young prospects for a guy who makes much more than you could sign pat burrell for?
Posted by: jedstylesux | December 10, 2008 at 05:33 PM
Rangers get Gary Sheffield and $4 million from Detroit.
Brewers get Kevin Millwood.
Tigers get Bill Hall.

"Guillen should not be traded. Magglio is set to make 16 or 17 million next year. If the Tigers are trying to cut payroll then this may be a good option. Plus that money could get them a real good starting pitcher or closer" The only position that Guillen can play is DH. Ordonez is still a top hitter. The Tigers need to find a power hitting, left handed OF/DH.
Posted by: Rob M. | December 10, 2008 at 05:54 PM
Why in the world do we want Bill Hall. If we trade Sheffield and about half (or more) of his salary is taken by the Rangers, do it and sign maybe two people to the bullpen. Maybe Fuentes and Lyon/ Lyon and Cruz...
Posted by: TigerFan54 | December 10, 2008 at 06:12 PM
Salary dump. Hall would give you close to the production you got out of Sheff in '08, but is capable of playing all over the field and is on the right side of 30. Anyway, just speculating, since the Rangers were linked to Sheffield and the Brewers were linked to Millwood.

Ordonez may still be a "top hitter" as you claim but for the kind of money he is making I expect more than
21 home runs and 103 RBI whcih is what he posted last year. Here are a few guys who posted the same stats for less than he made last year: Carlos Lee, Carlos Quentin, and Jermaine Dye just to name a few. Magglio needs to be traded because (a) he is becoming more of a singles hitter and (b) he's slowing down (when was the last time he tracked a ball down in right-center field and CAUGHT it).
