Yesterday Scott Boras was asked how serious the Red Sox are about keeping Jason Varitek. His reply: "Well, when a Major League team approaches you about a player and offers a contract then I guess that’s serious."
However, Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe talked to a source who said the only offer Varitek has received from the Red Sox was the arbitration offer he declined. But then Theo Epstein said today that he made offers to three free agents, Tek among them.

The red sox are still waiting for boras to lower his demands of a Posada-like deal.

He never said they made an offer. The comment sounds like it could be taken a few ways. And since the Sox did not make an offer I guess its not serious.

Yes, the Red Sox offered Tek a contract. but it was only for one year, $10MM.

Maybe even 2 years and totaling that amount.

Tek is washed up. He is nothing more than a backup at this point.

he is not a backup. his offense may suck, but his defense and leadership make him a viable starter. he will soon be replaced (probably next season) but for right now, he is worth 10 to 11 million for the Sox

I'd have to agree with 04forever

Put the C on Pedroia and lets move on.
Been watching this site closely and seems to me only Sox offered Varitek contract.
I've never said Theo was perfect.

29 GM'S out there dont want the greatest play calling catcher who caught 4 no-hitters, and studies opposing players and knows their weaknesses, YADA, YADA, YADA.
I think you should hit a little bit if paying so much cash.

04Forever: "god boras is an a$$clown"
How does Theo agreeing with Boras, in opposition to an "unnamed source", reflect badly on Boras?

CYYoung, the other 29 GMs don't want to sign him because they would have to give up 2 draft picks.

"he is not a backup. his offense may suck, but his defense and leadership make him a viable starter. he will soon be replaced (probably next season) but for right now, he is worth 10 to 11 million for the Sox"
I also have a fair feeling that he will be back, for no other reason that no one else is going to give him a 2 year contract for anywhere near 10 million dollars and why should they? Agreed he can call a good game, that's just about it at this point and time of his career, he cannot throw, he will take your team out of a rally as fast as (or faster) than anyone by K'ing, or hitting into the dreaded 4-6-3 DP with regularity on way to many occasions and worse of all? He is going to be 37 years old and has never, ever hit like Posasda has, yet is looking for a deal in that neighborhood and it just ain't gonna happen, even if the Reds, Tigers, Mets and Dodgers were in dire need of a catcher. Boras can rant all he wants, you cannot make a diamond out of an ashtray.

From the article: "[Epstein] did admit that he made three offers to available free-agents. Jason Varitek was one of them. The other two were likely Teixeira and a pitcher."
I notice that this doesn't exactly state that Epstein admitted Varitek was one of the players who was offered a contract. The way it's phrased it could be the reporter making assumptions. Has anyone seen or heard Epstein's actual quote? Because there were rumored offers to Teixeira, Burnett, Sabathia and maybe Lowe, too, and according to Theo only three of those (max) were accurate.
