7:47pm: Joel Sherman says the Schneider talks took place several weeks ago. The Mets were planning to replace him with Jason Varitek, until the Red Sox offered Tek arbitration.
6:32pm: According to Dave Sheinin of the Washington Post, two sources confirmed the Red Sox are in trade discussions for Mets catcher Brian Schneider. Schneider is owed $4.9MM in '09, the last year of his deal.

Doubt anything materializes from this. The Red Sox have been linked to practically every catcher in baseball. Not sure what the Sox would give back besides bullpen help.

What would the Mets get in return?? Lugo?
Posted by: Hyro | December 08, 2008 at 06:35 PM
hmmm...which releiver would the mets want back?
Posted by: ksuth | December 08, 2008 at 06:35 PM
Hyro:
I hope you were joking. Why would the Mets ever take Lugo?
Posted by: ksuth | December 08, 2008 at 06:36 PM
The Red Sox can do better than Brian Schneider.
Posted by: twoseamer | December 08, 2008 at 06:36 PM
Bengie Molina for Daniel Murphy?
Posted by: kdub | December 08, 2008 at 06:36 PM
Hyro, yeah, I'm sure the Mets want to replace Reyes with Lugo.
Posted by: Chunk23 | December 08, 2008 at 06:38 PM
So why exactly would the Rangers take on Molina for Murphy?
Serioulsy, the Mets want to unload Castillo. But it makes perfect sense to take Lugo, right?
Posted by: B3NG4L | December 08, 2008 at 06:39 PM
Ksuth: I definitely don't want Lugo, I was just pondering who the Mets would get...
Posted by: Hyro | December 08, 2008 at 06:39 PM
kdub...that'd never happen.
Posted by: ksuth | December 08, 2008 at 06:39 PM
doubt molina for murphy would ever happen. molina is a proven cather who had a great season last year for a player that had like 131 plate apperances in his career. but i wouldnt mind any bullpen help from the sox for our "wonerful" catcher
Posted by: metsfan23 | December 08, 2008 at 06:40 PM
Masterson?? I dont know..seems a little sketchy to me and I'm pretty sure the Sox wont deal Masterson for Schneider... maybe we will be seeing a Schneider/Heilman trade for a reliever.... a lot of teams looking for a catcher.
Posted by: RIPShea | December 08, 2008 at 06:41 PM
They are throwing this out there so that V-Tek has a heart attack and realizes he has to sign with Boston cause they REALLY are moving on without him and will only pay him half of what he wanted.....
Posted by: AstrosCoverage.blogspot.com | December 08, 2008 at 06:42 PM
Yeah, I just wanted to bounce it off a wall to see if it stuck.
Posted by: kdub | December 08, 2008 at 06:43 PM
what do the red sox think that Schneider has???? he a ok catcher and a powerless hitter
Posted by: Mets5-7-57 | December 08, 2008 at 06:43 PM
If this deal is made, I highly doubt that the Red Sox have to give up anything of real value.
Posted by: scribbletone | December 08, 2008 at 06:44 PM
I will say he is better offensively than Varitek...I mean they are basically the same player but Varitek makes a lot more money than Schneider
Posted by: RIPShea | December 08, 2008 at 06:45 PM
TheTEEJ hit it on the head, this isnt about brian its about jason
Posted by: 04Forever | December 08, 2008 at 06:45 PM
can castillo get in on the trade too?????
Posted by: Mets5-7-57 | December 08, 2008 at 06:46 PM
I like Schneider, but he's by no means untouchable.
Would be interesting to see what kind of deal we're talking about here. I have to figure the Mets would ask for a pitching prospect in return...
Posted by: AdropOFvenom | December 08, 2008 at 06:47 PM
but is this saying the mets are in with castro or gonna get a new catcher??? any thoughts?
Posted by: Mets5-7-57 | December 08, 2008 at 06:48 PM
im shocked at the stupidity of some of you...
lugo would not replace reyes, he would play short....
daniel murphy is on the mets, not texas, thats david murphy, why would people talking about a SF/Tex deal in this thread?
the mets would never do DANIEL murphy for melina..melina is way too old and slow, not even a top 5 catcher, murphy was a stud for the mets last season....
Posted by: TuffleShuffle | December 08, 2008 at 06:53 PM
As much as I'd like to see Castro start 100+ games a year for the Mets... it will never happen. He seems to get injured quite often lol..
I know this is gonna sound off the wall but what about a Castrol/Cancel combo if Schneider does get traded although I don't see it happening.
Cancel isn't the best hitter.. we all know that but I loved his hustle last year. He seems to always make some type of momentum play in his games and he is pretty nice defensively.
Posted by: RIPShea | December 08, 2008 at 06:56 PM
If I had to guess, I'd think Bengie Molina would be high on the Mets wishlist, they could also of course join the half-dozen teams looking for a young catcher, or just settle for Varitek....although I despise the thought of giving up a draft pick for Tek, but we'd be getting a prospect in return at least.
Just a thought, but would Bowden for Schneider be fair? Or at least fair enough that a lesser prospect could even up the sides? Seems like a nice target for the Mets.
Posted by: AdropOFvenom | December 08, 2008 at 06:57 PM
Yeah the Mets wouldn't trade Murphy for Molina. That would be stupid. The Giants would do it in a second.
And there's no way the Mets would take Lugo in a deal for Schneider. Lugo has extremely negative value. Schneider has some value, even if it is low.
Looking at the Red Sox roster, maybe a trade of Aardsma for Schneider? The rest of the Red Sox bullpen seems to be too much(Okajima, Masterson, Delcarmen, Lopez, Ramirez).

"Just a thought, but would Bowden for Schneider be fair? Or at least fair enough that a lesser prospect could even up the sides? Seems like a nice target for the Mets."
@venom:
As a Mets fan I would love that trade but it's probably way too much.
Posted by: supermets | December 08, 2008 at 07:03 PM
Probably aim an awful lot lower than a top prospect like a Michael Bowden/Justin Masterson for a soon to be 33 year old non hitting catcher like Schneider. This is more than likely just checking around to find someone willing to unload a high dollar catcher on the cheap, or like was posted above, showing 'Tek his services are not required for 10+ million over a 2-3 year contract.
Only way a Bowden goes in a catcher trade is for a top catcher, not one on his last legs making 5 million, just like the one they let go.

Met fans: keep in mind, Pelfrey pitched amazing with Schneider, a lot less inspiring with anyone else catching...just food for thought
Posted by: metzfan22 | December 08, 2008 at 07:21 PM
This is stupid.
What are the Mets going to do? Turn around and trade a good prospect for a catcher. Unless its a situation where the Mets are trading for one of Texas's young catchers or another young catcher. Oh, and please don't say Varitek. Puke.
I don't trade Schneider for a reliever. Why? Keep the catcher and sign the relievers. You're not going to get Benjie Molina without paying a premium(Murphy, Nick Evans, etc.), and I really don't think the Giants should trade him (keep him and groom Sandoval to play 1B/3B this year, so Posey can take over as catcher in 2010-2011). The Mets will overpay dearly for a 1 year rental in Molina. Use the prospects for something else or...hell...I don't know...give them playing time so you have more young, cost-controlled role players? Something the Mets really need. Unless someone overpays for Schneider, just live with his bat and keep him. The first priority with a catcher is how he handles a pitching staff. And, since there isn't a young catcher waiting in the wings for the Mets, I don't see a point in trading Schneider.
Having Cancel in the lineup is a black hole. Schneider's bat is better than Cancel's, and their defense is a wash.

"Met fans: keep in mind, Pelfrey pitched amazing with Schneider, a lot less inspiring with anyone else catching...just food for thought"
Small sample size, but in 6 starts with Castro catching batters hit .225/.291/.345.
In 23 starts with Schneider catching, batters hit .270/.333/.379.
Posted by: supermets | December 08, 2008 at 07:27 PM
Doubt this happens, and if it does, it will be for little value.
Posted by: daniel b. | December 08, 2008 at 07:31 PM
Dear Mets fans,
the fact that you are mentioning names like Bowden and Masterson for Brian salary dump Schnieder is laughable and shows how little the average Mets fan knows about baseball. As a Red Sox fan, I think that Yankees fans know more than Mets fans. That is saying a lot.

varitek is so screwed, it looks like red sox or early retirement
Posted by: 04Forever | December 08, 2008 at 07:54 PM
04Forever- No doubt he is in a terrible situation. I would not be shocked if he ends up with a team like the Pirates for something like 3 mil a year over 2 years. I really doubt any top 15 team signs Varitek and surrenders a first round pick.
Posted by: johnbuckformvp | December 08, 2008 at 08:02 PM
"varitek is so screwed, it looks like red sox or early retirement"
It's not early retirement if your body's washed up already.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 08, 2008 at 08:03 PM
why wouldn't the sox just sign Zaun if they wanted a cheap weak bat behind the plate
Posted by: touchmymonkey | December 08, 2008 at 08:06 PM
Schneider and Varitek are not the same player. Varitek had a rough 2008 with on and off field issues and could easily bounce back in '09.
Schneider is what he is, a backup.
Posted by: TJ Sox Fan | December 08, 2008 at 08:14 PM
No one wants to pay the draft pick for Tek on top of the crazy contract he wants.
Posted by: ksuth | December 08, 2008 at 08:18 PM
Well i personally like Schneider, but i mean i remember hearing about a catcher in the Mets farm system, Josh Thole in Single A. He was born in 86 so could be major league ready. If we wanna talk about a possible Schneider,Schoenweis, and Heilman for Justin Masterson and Cash im listening
Posted by: Amazing69Metro | December 08, 2008 at 08:23 PM
Here is the transcript of the conversation that took place several weeks ago.
Minaya: Any interest in Brian Schneider; he can't hit for average or power, can't run well but calls a decent game and is fairly durable?
Epstein: Sounds way too familiar.
Posted by: KangarooBoxer26 | December 08, 2008 at 08:28 PM
Maybe the Mets plan on drafting James Skelton in the Rule 5 draft and groom him into a starter's role for 2010 probably making 70 starts this year and being a defensive replacement to Castro late in games. I know he's small for a catcher but hes shown good OBP and seems like he has some descent potential.

"Varitek had a rough 2008 with on and off field issues and could easily bounce back in '09."
could buonce back maybe. could "easily" bounce back, not a chance. we're seeing the waning days of Tek and its not just the GM in Boston realizing this.

Hahahaha, no. I seriously hope you're joking. Two garbage relievers and a mediocre catcher for a major league ready starter and cash?
Beyond that, regardless of how old he is, a single A catcher isn't jumping to a starting job in the MLB.
Posted by: 0bsessions | December 08, 2008 at 09:20 PM
Nothing will happen with this.
Posted by: icedrake523 | December 08, 2008 at 11:04 PM
Schneider is pretty bad, no question about it. His .257/.339/.367 line was actually a pretty major improvement from his '06 and '07 seasons, and he's pedestrian with the glove. But there are 30 major league teams and apparently only 7 or 8 people on the planet who qualify as "good" major league catchers.
Mets catchers had an 85 OPS+, which was only slightly below average for the catcher position. They might as well just stick with the Schneider/Castro combo and try to find a way to upgrade 2B.
Posted by: JK47 | December 08, 2008 at 11:45 PM
if i were the mets i would 100% giv up schnieder if i had that chance... not to say hes a bad player hes great defensively but his .250 average with 10 homeruns is not acceptable .... plus we need a right hitting bat in the bottom f our lineup
we absolutely need an outfielder and we need abreu or manny either one is great but manny is the better choice with more power and better character in the mets atmospheric background with pedro reyes and santana.
our rotation also needs work with our bullpen set
BASICALLY THIS IS WHAT OUR TEAM SHOULD LOOK LIKE
