« Red Sox Offer Arb To Varitek, Byrd | Main | Mets Offer Arb To Perez, No Others »
8:17pm: Grudzielanek says he's almost certain to decline the Royals' offer. Instead of the maximum salary, he wants to play for a contender. He feels he can play for at least two more seasons. Five or six clubs have already expressed interest.
6:36pm: According to a press release, the Royals offered arbitration to second baseman Mark Grudzielanek. This was a somewhat unexpected move, but perhaps the Royals prefer to stick with the middle infield tandem of Grudz and Mike Aviles for '09. Grudzielanek seems likely to accept the offer, as he could earn north of $4MM.

Yikes.. This is hard to believe. Looks like he's headed back to KC, or given away in ST with a healthy chunk of his 2009 salary to unload him on someone else needing a backup infielder. Just what was Moore thinking?

This is truly unbelievable! If he accepts this, and we are stuck with his salary in 09, I will be furious! So far, everything Dayton has done this offseason makes sense, but this is simply ridiculous! There is no way to justify it, unless you know he's not going to accept it, and are fishing for the draft pick.

Hey...I predicted this in the recent poll...I had no idea WTH I was talking about about. But even the losers get lucky sometimes. LOL

Bad move IMO. I love Grudzy and even had a chance to talk to him after a game this last year...but damn no one is going to pay him $5 million with a bad back.
On the other hand, if he accepts (which he will) we can still work to sign a middle infielder and release him within 45 days of Opening Day. I suspect he's already told DM he'll decline in order to give the Royals a sandwich pick.

I'm a big time Giants fans and I liked Grudz when he was with the dodgers. He's a hell of a player and provides veteran leadership in the clubhouse. If I were the GM of a contending team, I would sign him with the quickness.

Perhaps Grudz told Moore that he would decline and test the market. He could fit in well back with the Dodgers if they decide not to bring back Casey Blake and play DeWitt at 3B. Perhaps then they could actually get serious and resign Furcal.

What about the White Sox?

Bah...guess I was wrong. If Grudzy thinks he's still able to play for a contender more power to him...great guy but anyone who signs him is taking a big risk.
As a Royals fan thanks though - a sandwich pick would be awesome!

No way he accepts. he's looking for a contender.
Him and Grienke both apparently.
