« Nationals Rumors: Dunn, Votto, Greinke | Main | Cardinals Sign Trever Miller »
According to Ken Rosenthal, Type A free agent starter Ben Sheets is likely to decline the Brewers' offer of arbitration. He and C.C. Sabathia could leave the Brewers with four draft picks but two holes at the front of the rotation.
Sheets would've had a one-year deal at more than $11MM if he accepted, but his agent apparently expects better on the open market (even though his new team would have to surrender a draft pick).

Lots of picks...not lots of SPs.
They need to pursue Wolf...or better.

Maybe Houston can dump some salary (Vaverde, Wigginton) and sign Sheets.

with all of these players gone, the brewers probably have nearly 25 million to spend this off-season, it would be nice to add 2 guys to the back end of the bullpen (wood and hoffman come to mind) as well as a starter (maybe jon garland? otherwise trade for one), and then hopefully trade cameron to the yanks for kennedy, and then hopefully trade a prospect or two to the royals for Dejesus

Here's my (ideal) Brew Crew plan:
Sign Derek Lowe to a 5yr/$75MM deal.
Sign Kerry Wood to a 3yr/$30MM deal.
Trade J.J. Hardy for Kevin Slowey

We're not going after a high priced closer so cross Wood off your list and Jon Garland sucks. They better not go after him.

what if.. the Yankees sign both Sheets and Sabathia? Do they only get the 2 picks? or do they get more supplemental picks?

As a cubs fan i love that idea!! Even though the wood idea would upset me, but i doubt he would go.

Brewers should sign Randy Johnson. They gave him a great ovation when became the second highest in strikeouts.

"what if.. the Yankees sign both Sheets and Sabathia?"
The Brewers would get the Yankees' first and second round picks and two supplemental picks.

Lowe @ 5/75 is horrible

The brewers have done such a good job drafting well and laying off high priced free agents (gange was only one year), it would be sad to see them give a 4 or 5 year deal that could hurt them when it comes time to pay younger players. If they could trade to fix up the rotation and let Parra progress they will be able to compete in the NL.

don't think Astros are going to get rid of Valverde to get sheets. Think i saw something on Chron.com about Wade basically saying he chose Val over Wolf

All I have to say is thank God WestCoastBias isn't the Brewers' GM.
All 3 of those moves are horrible.
Sign Hoffman to a 2 year deal if possible.
Pass on all the garbage starters available. 4 year big $ deals are not good for a medium market squad.
Exhibit A would be that stone Jeff Suppan.
Wood at a 3 year deal is a big fat no in my world. No way he lasts 3 years without a major injury, even at 60 innings/year.
I'd keep Hardy thanks.
Just because you have the money doesn't mean you have to spend it.
Even with those moves, the Brewers don't make the playoffs.
I'd save up for a bigger splash next offseason. The only move I would consider would be to trade Fielder for some high end pitching prospects if possible.
If that happens I would go after Dunn and stick him at first base for 3-4 years. That's the only FA (non closer) that makes any kind of sense, and we'd have to make a move to accommodate it.

I like Sheets BUT he isn't worth 11-15 mil especially since he opted out of having surgery on his arm....
Posted by: elcaballofan4eva | December 03, 2008 at 07:00 PM
There was never any discussion of surgery.
Rest was the best fix.
He'll give ya 20-27 starts a year. Depending on how he's feeling, they'll be good-to-great.
Is that worth $15m?
For one year it would be, but not 4/60. The risk outweighs the reward.

Don't look for the Astros to sign him. They will stay away from all type A FAs since their draft pick isn't protected. I believe I read that Ed Wade said as much.

Poor Ben sheets just caught the injury bug at the wrong time but we are talking about a guy who can pitch his ass off but he is not worth 11-15 mil. That is crazy!!!! I would take this risk because what other options do the brewers really have. Offer Sheets some years Brew Crew he is going to give you a discount. Yeah he is not CC or the best of the best out there right now but he will keep you from loosing all three games in a series with the Cubs.
