The latest from SI.com's Jon Heyman...
- The Giants "look like a major threat" to the Dodgers for Manny Ramirez and are "making a serious run at him." Former teammate J.T. Snow apparently raved about him. Nonetheless Heyman says the Dodgers are "probably still considered the favorite." Heyman lists the Rangers as "intrigued." He believes Ramirez will get three guaranteed years somewhere.
- Heyman says Derek Lowe is "quite possibly" in play for the Phillies, though we heard from Ken Rosenthal today that the team denied interest. Heyman also sticks with the Brewers and Angels as outside possibilities despite reports to the contrary. He believes Mets GM Omar Minaya prefers Oliver Perez to Lowe.
- The Giants, Twins, and Rangers are in on Joe Crede.
- Players said to be in on Freddy Garcia: the Mets, White Sox, and Rangers. We can probably cross off the Mets with their Tim Redding signing.
- Heyman believes the Dodgers want to replace Brad Penny with Randy Wolf.
- Heyman says the Pirates offered more guaranteed money than the Red Sox to Rocco Baldelli. Dejan Kovacevic had this first in an article published early this morning.
- The Red Sox were looking at Eric Hinske but with Baldelli and Mark Kotsay in tow it's unlikely. A Japanese team has "allegedly shown interest" in Hinske.
- Before signing with the Rays for two years and $16MM, Pat Burrell was getting offers in the one-year, $5MM range.

Lol, did Boras tell you to say that?
Posted by: Cinco Ocho | January 09, 2009 at 12:25 PM
Boras must be working hard since the Giants have repeatedly said, they can't afford Manny...
Posted by: 55saveslives | January 09, 2009 at 12:26 PM
Here we are again with Heyman Boras mouthpiece. Why would the Angels have any interest in pitching? They are stacked with pitching. They needs bats. Now he says the Giants are a major thread for the Dodgers. Yea right.Boras is aiming for the Yankees. He trying to get more money from them. This is why he using Heyman to get the word out.
Posted by: terry180 | January 09, 2009 at 12:29 PM
Hehe...go Boras! I wonder if Boras has an office in the SI building.
Posted by: vtadave | January 09, 2009 at 12:30 PM
The Twins link to Crede is a complete contradiction to what LaVelle Neal III said earlier. He said the Twins have no intent on bringing in a guy with a bad back on the turf of the Dome plus he's a Boras client.
Posted by: Twin Bill | January 09, 2009 at 12:31 PM
Tim, you should rethink reposting Heyman articles and data. His material is so boras skewed it cannot be taken seriously. He is becoming overt about his alliance and I do not see how his words can even be considered rumors sufficient to qualify on your forum.
Posted by: go sox | January 09, 2009 at 12:32 PM
Boras must have the password to Heyman's email address or something.
Posted by: Cinco Ocho | January 09, 2009 at 12:33 PM
Ah... it's never an offseason without a Manny drama.
Posted by: start_wearing_purple | January 09, 2009 at 12:34 PM
did heyman really say that the "phillies huddled with lowe?" when did this happen?! unless i miss read it he said the phillies met with lowe, while every other writer has never mentioned it
Posted by: Chris | January 09, 2009 at 12:35 PM
has anybody mentioned they think heyman is a boras mouthpiece?
(agrees with you guys)
Posted by: 100backeduptrucks | January 09, 2009 at 12:36 PM
Don't believe a word this heyman guy says. He pretty much rewrites everything that other base writers write about and publishes it as his own. Sabean said unless Manny lowers his demands we won't be able to afford him. I kind of hope no one signs him, that would be great. Best off season move in years if everyone passed on him or started offering him 2 years 10 million.
Posted by: lincecum4cy | January 09, 2009 at 12:37 PM
that makes two players now that the Pirates offered more money to that chose to play elsewhere for less.
Posted by: MrMadison | January 09, 2009 at 12:40 PM
Yeah, I hate Jon Heyman.

Who was the other player? I don't remember.
Posted by: Cinco Ocho | January 09, 2009 at 12:43 PM
"Before signing with the Rays for two years and $16MM, Pat Burrell was getting offers in the one-year, $5MM range."
This makes zero sense to me. He needs a better agent.
"Heyman says the Pirates offered more guaranteed money than the Red Sox to Rocco Baldelli. "
Thats not hard, Rocco only gets 500k guarenteed from Boston.
"that makes two players now that the Pirates offered more money to that chose to play elsewhere for less."
If you are picking between the Pirates and Boston, you better have a hell of a lot better offer from the Bucs.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | January 09, 2009 at 12:46 PM
It seems all Heyman does is say that more teams are interested in a player other than the ones that, I don't know...have interest?!?!?
Posted by: squid92 | January 09, 2009 at 12:51 PM
Who was the other player? I don't remember.
Posted by: Cinco Ocho | January 09, 2009 at 12:43 PM
Daniel Cabrera.
which is pretty sad, because he chose to play for the worst team in baseball, for less money, than play for the Pirates.

Wow, well at least they have the Steelers, right?
Posted by: Cinco Ocho | January 09, 2009 at 12:54 PM
Word is Mets are close to signing Redding today.
Posted by: Twins GM | January 09, 2009 at 01:02 PM
Wow, if the Rangers get in on Crede that would be one powerful hitting infield
Blalock at DH/1B/3B
Chris Davis at 1B/3B
Kinsler at 2B
Young at SS
Crede at 3B
Just don't breath too hard near them or 2-3 will land on the DL for an extended stay.
Posted by: candocantu | January 09, 2009 at 01:05 PM
You forgot this part from Heyman's article Timmy:
"• Freddy Garcia is being pursued by the Mets, White Sox and Rangers. Garcia shut things down in the Venezuela Winter League but his MRI revealed no damage to his shoulder."
Posted by: Alan | January 09, 2009 at 01:06 PM
There is no one in the media who seems more like a pure Boras tool than Heyman.
How much does he pay you, Jon?
Posted by: caseyB | January 09, 2009 at 01:06 PM
"that makes two players now that the Pirates offered more money to that chose to play elsewhere for less."
Generally, players like to win. Pittsburgh is the place where winners go to die. (as far as baseball is concerned)
"Before signing with the Rays for two years and $16MM, Pat Burrell was getting offers in the one-year, $5MM range."
That's mad.
Burrell is a fantastic hitter, and even if he's a poor defensive player, his value is still much more than 1/5.
If Burrell's agent can't convince teams that a guy who has posted an OPS+ over 120 in four straight seasons is a valuable player, then his agent totally failed.
2/16 is acceptable, but 1/5 for Burrell would've just been brutal.
Posted by: scribbletone | January 09, 2009 at 01:08 PM
Rocco in Pit for a year and getting playing time would have been smart. The guy is young. Could have got a lot of playing time and put up some good stats to get a big contract.
Also I would love to see Crede play for the Twins but that will never happen. That rumor is as good as them signing Tex to play 3B, lmfao.
Here is a better rumor Twins looking at Craig Counsell to play 3B.
Posted by: Twins GM | January 09, 2009 at 01:09 PM
No offense to Giants fans, but I think Manny would sooner retire than play his final years for a team that won't be making the playoffs anytime in the next 5 years.
Posted by: jrs | January 09, 2009 at 01:09 PM
if the phillies really are in it they are prob trying to just drive up the price for the braves cause they really cant afford him
Posted by: drumzalicious | January 09, 2009 at 01:11 PM
If the Burrell thing is actually true then it is nice to see the Rays jump in and make sure they get their guy.
Posted by: RaysFan | January 09, 2009 at 01:20 PM
jrs,
You obviously haven't seen the NL West...
If Giants had Manny, they would win the west therefor MAKE the playoffs.
With their pitching staff, possibly making it deep into playoffs but no WS.

"Generally, players like to win. Pittsburgh is the place where winners go to die. (as far as baseball is concerned)"
When was the last time a winner actually went out and signed with the Pirates?
"No offense to Giants fans, but I think Manny would sooner retire than play his final years for a team that won't be making the playoffs anytime in the next 5 years."
Not the impression I get. If what Manny cared about was winning, he'd have stayed in Boston for that near guaranteed $40 million. Instead, he fought his way out in an effort to get a four or five year deal that he is not getting. I used to think he just loved to play for the fun of it and drew a big check because he wasn't a moron, but he's managed to shatter that delusion for me.
Posted by: 0bsessions | January 09, 2009 at 01:25 PM
Manny will sign with whoever gives the most $$$$$$$$$
Posted by: 55saveslives | January 09, 2009 at 01:32 PM
Did he really say that Moorad stays out of the GMs business???
HE SIGNED ERIC BYRNES TO THAT F-IN CONTRACT!!!!
GEEZ!

Heyman is really coming off as a complete tool this offseason.

"No offense to Giants fans, but I think Manny would sooner retire than play his final years for a team that won't be making the playoffs anytime in the next 5 years."
The Giants have a very, very good shot at playoffs. They're in the NL West, not a real division. More good players have left the division than have been brought in.
Posted by: melonis rex | January 09, 2009 at 02:22 PM
here's hoping Crede signs with Texas, there by making Chris Davis more available for a trade for pitching, Jonathan Sanchez/Henry Sosa maybe...
Posted by: Nuschler's News | January 09, 2009 at 02:59 PM
FWIW, that Gammons article quoted in new blog post above also had this:
>> Where Manny Ramirez will end up: "The Giants have already said they are not in on them. The winter of disinformation from the agents has been astounding. The Mets have told Scott Boras [Ramirez's agent] they are not interested in Manny. The fact that the Wilpon family [who own the Mets] lost $500 m[illion] in the Madoff scandal makes Manny's plight seem pretty ridiculous. The question that the Dodgers have right now, if they go back to two years at $45 m[illion], will Manny be very unhappy? There was a report this week that the Dodgers have discussed going into the [free agent] market and signing a discounted OF like Bobby Abreu for one year, then going into the market for Matt Holliday next winter."

Heyman is a complete tool in general, he's just lucky enough to get to write for SI.
Posted by: scribbletone | January 09, 2009 at 03:03 PM
im pretty new to MLBTR, ive been coming here for a few months now. My knowledge of the players, teams, sports agents, and media regulars is pretty limited, but its slowly expanding thanks to the articles on this site, and the members of the forums that post meaningful discussions. Ive seen Heyman bashed a few times over the past couple of months for his inaccurate reportings and dumb trade coverage. However, I have never seen just how bad of a sports journalist he is, until this forum, and some very valid evidence brought against him. The dude is a complete tool.
Posted by: sjdurfey | January 09, 2009 at 03:32 PM
underdog8- what areticle are you refering to? Sabean himself has said on multiple occasions that the Giants ARE in on Manny, the stipulations Sabean himself has said, are "it would have to be perfect fit money wise" are what make it questionably at best the Giants will ever actually land him over the Dodgers, not that they aren't in on him.
Not unlike Heyman, I wouldn't listen to everything Gammons says either.
There's a rundown of all the info created this past week on Manny here: http://nuschlersnews.blogspot.com/2009/01/wow-what-week-its-been-exactly-7-days.html

Scribbletone is right on with his judgment of Heyman
Posted by: Nuschler's News | January 09, 2009 at 03:36 PM
Nuschler,
You should probably relax on Chris Davis. The Giants aren't getting him. He's young, affordable, and projects to be great; therefore, why would the Rangers trade him? There's no way in hell signing Crede makes that guy expendable. Acquiring Swisher is much more realistic.
Posted by: peezy | January 09, 2009 at 03:40 PM
Peezy, for the reasons you just named, the Giants are the Ideal organization for which the Rangers could make a deal.
The Rangers are in dire need of Solid, front of the rotation pitching. That is the Giants strongest asset.
The Giants are in need of Solid, young middle of the order hitters, the Rangers biggest asset.
Neither team has enough of this talent at the major league level yet to feel totally comfortable that they have a surplus from which to deal, but it may still make a trade possible.
At this time, Davis or Salty are probably the most likely to bring the biggest return in what they need. While Davis may not have ready made backup plan just yet, Salty can play there, or Blaylock for a year, or a team could include a potential 1B prospect, like Travis Ishikawa.
I agree with most people, that Jonathan Sanchez at this point can neither be considered a front line starter, nor should he be able to land a Davis by himself, but a package built around him AND another high end prospect a little further off, like Sosa, AND someone like Ishikawa, is a pretty solid return for him.
And I wouldn't quite consider him untouchable just yet. The Rangers have alot of holes to fill, just like the Giants.
As for Crede, he himself doesn't make Davis expendable as no one is trying to say he is any sort of upgrade, but more so of a stop gap as the Rangers may be able to fill other holes with a trade of someone like Davis.
Posted by: Nuschler's News | January 09, 2009 at 04:24 PM
Davis isn't getting traded anytime soon. Just forget about it. They have no idea what he can do over a full season yet. Once they know, he could bring back four or five top prospects if he explodes. What is this talk of Sosa as a high-end propsect? The guy took an enormous step back last year, and is in no way an adequate haul for what Davis' value could return.
Ishikawa shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath as this guy in terms of a trade package. Davis is otherworldly more talented than Dan Ortmeier Version 2.0.
For all of your activity, you're going to need to start fashioning some more realistic trade scenarios before getting laughed off of baseball blogs.
Davis for Sanchez / Sosa / Ishikawa is a joke. Try again.
Posted by: peezy | January 09, 2009 at 05:06 PM
If the Giants wanted Davis that bad it would take Sanchez, Bumgarner or Alderson, and maybe even Noonan. It would be a stupid trade for the Giants, for no one has any idea just how good he'll be once he starts off as a full-time player. This guy has a Jay Bruce-esque type of ceiling, and there's no way the Rangers are giving him up until they see what they've got in him. More than likely, they'll try to sign him long-term if proves to be really good.
There's no dream solution, ala trade, for the Giants right now. Sanchez needs a half season to build some more value. The owners need to stop being cheap and pony up the cash for Ramirez for a three year deal, thereby giving themselves a shot at competing in a week division while they rebuild.
Posted by: peezy | January 09, 2009 at 05:17 PM
nuschler, I did say "FWIW = for what it's worth" re the Gammons piece. I agree, take him with a grain of salt, though he tends to be more honest and personal than Heyman, who tends to post stuff because a certain agent told him. Both of them should be taken with a grain of salt. I wouldn't get too bent out of shape about it. The one thing I know is Manny isn't going anywhere else without a final chance for the Dodgers to make a play for him, regardless of whoever else is in the running for him. We shall see!
Posted by: Craig Phillips | January 09, 2009 at 05:57 PM
"Also I would love to see Crede play for the Twins but that will never happen" - Twins GM
Maybe the Twins should talk Crede into signing for one yr. with someone else this yr. so they can sign him to a long term deal to play on grass when the new stadium opens next season.
