According to Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun, the Orioles signed infielder Chris Gomez to a minor league deal. Gomez signed with the Orioles as a free agent prior to the '05 season and remained in the organization until the Indians took him off waivers in August of '07.

Good utility guy that can make contact and he is familiar with the O's. Glad to have him back.
Maybe he was tempted by the second base job sure to open up.

Always liked him off the bench. Not sure how able he'll be to play SS in a pinch though as a UTIL with the age. Is he limited now to 1B/2B/3B?

as an O, i don't hate giving up Brian Roberts for someone (young) who can immediately head into the rotation. i love the guy, i think his presence in the clubhouse is continually understated, but we're at a point where we need to manufacture success, otherwise let's just bring back Millar on a five year deal already and hang out in the basement of the ALEast for another decade. Freel has deadly speed and Izturis gives defensive clout- i'm just saying that i'd rather have Markakis locked up and then wait and see if the offense from a guy like Wieters can balance out what we'd miss from Brian. it would also be more realistic to get some outside help using players at top trade value and then project counting on only two of our four great young arms developing into solid rotation threats, not 4/4 like most people seem to be thinking probable.

Watch out AL East the O's have picked up another difference maker! Freel, Izturis, Hendrickson, Uehara and Gomez! Yeah we got all these guys for less then you paid for Burnett. All about quantity. Screw your quality mentality.

Roberts is dealt for sure now, the writing's on teh wall . . . Let the rumors begin!

In all seriousness, Gomez will compete against Donnie Murphy and others for a bench job along with Freel. Overall he still can play pretty well on a very limited basis. Not a bad bench/clubhouse guy for a young, not playoff bound, team.

Gomez was not claimed off waivers. He was traded for cash. The Sun corrected their error. Please correct your own.

Gomez was claimed off waivers, and the teams could not work out a trade so the Orioles let them have him for the $25,000(I think) waiver fee.

the os are heading in the right direction (especially if they trade roberts soon) but seem to be doing it slowly. how would everyone here have dealt with the os from the moment macphail got the job?

The poor man's Willie Bloomquist.
Which is akin to calling someone the rich man's Bill Gates.
